Neural interference effects on lateral vestibulospinal tract excitability by noisy galvanic vestibular stimulation.

OBJECTIVE: Noisy galvanic vestibular stimulation (GVS) using weak random noise waveforms enhances postural stability by modulating vestibula … hile adapting to each electrical stimulus. LVST excitability was assessed by measuring the soleus H-reflex following square-wave pulse GVS. Postural stability was measured by assessing the center of foot pressure sway while standing on a foam surface with eyes closed. RESULTS: The noisy GVS group showed significantly increased post-intervention H-reflex …

Carotid body chemoreceptors: physiology, pathology, and implications for health and disease.

The carotid body (CB) is the main peripheral chemoreceptor for arterial respiratory gases O2 and CO2 and pH, eliciting reflex ventilatory, cardiovascular, and humoral responses to maintain homeostasis. This review examines the fundamental biology underlying CB chemoreceptor function, its contribution to integrated physiological responses, and its role in maintaining health and potentiating disease. Emphasis is placed on 1) transduction mechanisms in chemoreceptor (type I) cells, highlighting the role played by the hypoxic inhibition of O2-dependent K+ channels and mitochondrial oxidative metab…

Changes in the frequency of swallowing during electrical stimulation of superior laryngeal nerve in rats.

The aim of the present study was to investigate the adaptation of the swallowing reflex in terms of reduced swallowing reflex initiation following continuous superior laryngeal nerve stimulation. Forty-four male Sprague Dawley rats were anesthetized with urethane. To identify swallowing, electromyographic activity of the left mylohyoid and thyrohyoid muscles was recorded. To evoke the swallowing response, the superior laryngeal nerve (SLN), recurrent laryngeal nerve, or cortical swallowing area was electrically stimulated. Repetitive swallowing evoked by continuous SLN stimulation was graduall…

Impact of intertrigeminal region AMPA receptor blockade on respiratory responses in rats.

We hypothesized that functional glutamatergic AMPA receptors are expressed in the intertrigeminal region (ITR) of the lateral pons, and that blockade of these receptors by a specific AMPA receptor antagonist (NBQX) would alter respiratory responses both to ITR glutamate injections as well as to vagally mediated reflex apnea induced by intravenous infusion of serotonin. Non-selective blockade of ITR glutamate receptors using kynurenic acid previously was shown to alter both of these respiratory responses. Unilateral ITR injections in 19 anaesthetized spontaneously breathing adult Sprague-Dawley…

Visual facial grasp.

Some patients with degenerative neurological diseases have a release of the vestibular-ocular reflex (VOR), as detected by passive head movement during visual fixation on a moving target ("doll's eyes"maneuver). However, a positive doll's eyes sign might be induced by other defects and the purpose of this article is to describe a new ocular sign of cortical dysfunction, the visual facial grasp. We observed three patients, one with progressive supranuclear palsy (PSP), another with probable Alzheimer's disease (AD) and a third with cortico-basal degeneration (CBD) all of whom appeared to demons…

Spinal and cortical inhibition in Huntington's chorea.

In this article we studied spinal and cortical inhibitory mechanisms in patients with Huntington's disease. To evaluate spinal cord inhibitory circuitries, we assessed reciprocal inhibition between antagonist forearm muscles and the recovery cycle of the H reflex in the flexor carpi radialis. Patients showed a significant decrease in the presynaptic phase of reciprocal inhibition reaching a minimum at the conditioning-test interval of 20 msec and an abnormal facilitation of the test H reflex at the conditioning test interval of 40 to 60 msec. Throughout its time course (10-200 msec), the H ref…

Hydrogen peroxide in the lung parenchyma stimulates vagally mediated phrenic activity.

STUDY OBJECTIVE: To elucidate the mechanism of hyperpnea and tachypnea, which are the common findings in cardiopulmonary patients. RATIONALE: Recently, it was found that activating pulmonary afferents by directly injecting hypertonic saline solution into the lung periphery causes a vagally mediated neural hyperpnea and tachypnea, ie, the excitatory lung reflex. Since reactive oxygen species are released during a variety of pulmonary diseases, we examined whether hydrogen peroxide (H(2)O(2)), a common mediator in cardiopulmonary diseases, can initiate the same excitatory lung reflex. MEASUREM…

Electrophysiological comparison between catechol- and urea-induced myoclonus models in the rat.

Catechol- and urea-induced myoclonus models in the rat were electrophysiologically compared to clarify pathophysiological differences. Catechol-induced myoclonus had various similarities with cortical reflex myoclonus in that there were electroencephalogram (EEG) discharges prior to myoclonic discharges, a spread of myoclonic discharges from the rostral to the caudal site, and a high amplitude somatosensory evoked potential (SEP). In urea-induced myoclonus, there were no EEG discharges related to myoclonic discharges and no enlarged SEP components as in reticular reflex myoclonus. Catechol-ind…

Degeneration of the primary snout sensory afferents in the cervical spinal cords following the infraorbital nerve transection in some mammals.

To obtain the neuroanatomical information on the role of the snout sensory input in mastication, the present study was conducted on young an … in the ventral horns. This neuroanatomical information suggests: 1) that the trigemino-neck muscle reflex will be generated monosynaptically by the primary neurons arising from the snout sensory organs and 2) that these primary neurons may play a large role as a neuronal bridge in connecting the masticatory reflex system and the cranio-neck reflex syste …

The effect of plasma volume expansion on the response to carotid occlusion in the non-human primate.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of plasma volume expansion on the cardiac and peripheral components of the baroreceptor reflex. Nine male Rhesus monkeys were chronically instrumented to measure arterial pressure and aortic blood flow. The aortic arch was denervated at the time of surgery. Bilateral carotid artery occlusion (BCO) was used to elicit the carotid sinus reflex both before and after 25% plasma volume expansion with an iso-osmotic dextran solution. The BCO elicited significant increases in heart rate (HR, 29.8 +/- 5.3 bpm) mean arterial pressure (MAP, 55.0 +/…

Effects of low-dose naloxone on subjective alertness and pupil diameter in normal and narcoleptic subjects.

Recent evidence suggests that endogenous opiates may be involved in the pathophysiology of narcolepsy. To test this theory, the effect of 0.8 mg naloxone hydrochloride on pupil size and subjective alertness was measured in normal and narcoleptic subjects. Naloxone resulted in significant pupillary constriction in the normal but not in the narcoleptic subjects. The extent of contraction of the pupil light reflex was reduced significantly in the narcoleptic but not in the normal subjects. There was no effect on subjective ratings of alertness on the Stanford Sleepiness Scale or the visual analog…

Effects of thyrotropin releasing hormone on cerebellar mutant mice--a kinesiological comparison between rolling mouse Nagoya, weaver and reeler.

Rolling Mouse Nagoya (RMN), weaver and reeler mice were examined for the clinical effectiveness of drugs (thyrotropin releasing hormone (TRH), reserpine, L-dopa) that are reported to facilitate or alter the metabolic system of noradrenaline (NA). Behavioral changes and ataxic gait were recorded by 16 mm cinefilms and EMG of the thigh extensor muscles. In addition, latencies in the reflex discharge of the muscle by tilting load were measured before and after the intraperitoneal injection of each drug and compared to those of normal littermates. TRH injection increased spontaneous behavioral act…

Quantitative analysis of anorectal pressures in Hirschsprung's disease.

Anorectal motility was investigated in 146 children with Hirschsprung's disease and 89 normal control subjects. Pressures were recorded in the rectum and anal canal at rest and during rectal distention. The rectoanal inhibitory reflex was absent in all but four patients. Intraluminal rectal pressure was higher than normal (16.5 vs. 14.6 cm H2O, P less than 0.03), with more frequent (41 per cent vs. 18 per cent, P less than 0.01) pressure waves. In the upper anal canal, there were more frequent (62 per cent vs. 18 per cent, P less than 0.001) spontaneous variations of pressure of lower frequenc…
