Optical blood glucose non-invasive detection and its research progress.

Blood glucose concentration is an important index for the diagnosis of diabetes, its self-monitoring technology is the method for scientific diabetes management. Currently, the typical household blood glucose meters have achieved great success in diabetes management, but they are discrete detection methods, and involve invasive blood sampling procedures. Optical detection technologies, which use the physical properties of light to detect the glucose concentration in body fluids non-invasively, have shown great potential in non-invasive blood glucose detection. This article summarized and analy

A Multidisciplinary Approach to the Management of Unusual Bilateral Gingival Recession Due to a Factitious Nail-Scratching Habit: A Case Report.

Self-inflicted gingival injuries have been reported in children and adolescents as a result of multiple factors such as accidental trauma, fingernail biting, sucking on objects such as pencils, or a nail-scratching habit. Management of these lesions requires a multidisciplinary approach that includes psychotherapy, behavioral counseling, and definitive treatment of oral soft tissue lesions. This paper illustrates the diagnosis and treatment of a 16-year-old male patient with a bilateral gingival recession in mandibular canines due to habitual nail scratching. A multidisciplinary approach for t

[Cardiac rehabilitation and non-medical treatment of chronic heart failure (without devices)].

Cardiac rehabilitation and non-medical treatment of chronic heart failure (without devices) Abstract. In the last decades, treatment of chronic heart failure has experienced important improvements, not only regarding medical and device therapy, but also concerning non-medical management. A multidisciplinary approach addressing self-management of medical therapy, improvement of cardiovascular risk factors, and optimization of lifestyle has gained a lot of attention. Its implementation is recognised as a class I, evidence A indication in the most recent European guidelines. Unfortunately, due to…

Initial experience with Allium™ stent in the management of bulbar urethral stricture.

We herein present our initial experience of a short series with the Allium™ Bulbar Urethral Stent (BUS) in the management of bulbar urethral disease. This Allium™ stent is a self-expandable metal stent which is intended for temporary placement. Our series is a retrospective analysis of 15 BUS placements in 13 patients conducted during 2014 to 2016. BUS was placed successfully after visual internal urethrotomy (VIU) in all patients. Stent insertion was successful in 8 patients (62%) with a mean follow up of 7.2 months (range, 2-12 months). Two of the failed patients stents were reinserted had r

[Rehabilitation standards for follow-up treatment and rehabilitation of patients with ventricular assist device (VAD)].

The increasing use of ventricular assist devices (VADs) in terminal heart failure patients provides new challenges to cardiac rehabilitation physicians. Structured cardiac rehabilitation strategies are still poorly implemented for this special patient group. Clear guidance and more evidence for optimal modalities are needed. Thereby, attention has to be paid to specific aspects, such as psychological and social support and education (e.g., device management, INR self-management, drive-line care, and medication). In Germany, the post-implant treatment and rehabilitation of VAD Patients working g…

Polycystic ovarian syndrome.

Polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) is a "multispeciality" disorder suspected in patients with irregular menses and clinical signs of hyperandrogenism such as acne, seborrhoea, hirsutism, irregular menses, infertility, and alopecia. Recently, PCOS has been associated with the metabolic syndrome. Patients may develop obesity, insulin resistance, acanthosis nigricans, Type 2 diabetes, dyslipidemias, hypertension, non-alcoholic liver disease, and obstructive sleep apnoea. Good clinical examination with hematological and radiological investigations is required for clinical evaluation. Management is

Major aorto-pulmonary collateral arteries (MAPCAs)--Bronchial fistula presenting as tracheotomy bleed.

Tracheal hemorrhage is a common occurrence in pediatric patients with long-term tracheotomies. The majority of these events are related to self-limited etiologies, such as granulation tissue or suction trauma. Tracheo-arterial fistula, however, represents a frequently fatal form of tracheal hemorrhage that may initially be difficult to distinguish from other causes. Previous reports have described the pathophysiology, presentation and management of tracheo-arterial fistula involving the innominate artery. We describe a case of a 21-month-old male with a history of significant congenital cardia

Mobile Application Prototype for Foot Self-care Support for Persons With Diabetes: A Human-Centered Design Approach.

The human-centered design approach has gained prominence in the development of mobile health solutions. However, its application to support foot self-care for persons with diabetes has not been extensively explored. This study aims to develop a mobile application prototype using a human-centered design approach to support foot self-care for persons with type 2 diabetes. The project used mixed methods, including a scoping review, patient interviews, a Delphi panel, and an acceptability and usability study of an educational booklet. This three-phase approach encompassed defining the context of u

The medical gaze reframed: A phenomenological investigation of patient visibility in oncology.

Contemporary health research often examines patient objectification, patient self-objectification, and good patient performance as separate concerns. Treating them in isolation makes it difficult to see how they combine to shape what patients feel able to express in clinical encounters. To address this gap, this study examines how cancer survivors describe objectification, internalization, and performance within oncology care. Through this analysis, we develop a unified analytic account of these three experiences. In doing so, we reframe the "medical gaze" in existential terms as the "medical

The impact of adolescent innovation on academic resilience, distance learning self-efficacy, and academic performance.

The COVID-19 pandemic introduced considerable challenges for adolescents as they adapted to the demands of remote learning, necessitating effective strategies to sustain their academic engagement and performance. This study investigates the relationship between adolescents' self-perceived innovativeness and their academic resilience, confidence in managing distance learning, and overall academic performance. Using data from a sample of 906 Chinese middle and high school students, the study identifies three primary findings: adolescents with higher levels of self-perceived innovativeness tend t

Transcatheter mitral valve replacement in a complex mitral annular calcification anatomy.

BACKGROUND: Transcatheter mitral valve replacement (TMVR) is emerging as a feasible alternative to conventional surgical intervention in patients at high surgical risk, also those with severe mitral annular calcification (MAC). However, the presence of a previously implanted self-expanding transcatheter aortic valve prosthesis introduces considerable technical difficulties, especially due to the risk of left ventricular outflow tract obstruction. CASE SUMMARY: To our knowledge, it is among the very few reported cases of combined percutaneous interventions with a self-expanding valve in the ao

Activation of the prefrontal cortex while performing a task at preferred slow pace and metronome slow pace: a functional near-infrared spectroscopy study.

Individuals have a preferred pace at which they perform voluntary repetitive movements. Previous studies have reported that greater activation of the prefrontal cortex was observed during self-initiated movements than during externally triggered movements. The purpose of the present study is to compare the activation of the prefrontal cortex induced when the subjects performed a peg-board task at their preferred slow pace (PSP, the self-initiated condition) with that induced when they performed the same task at metronome slow pace (MSP, the externally triggered condition) using functional near
