The effectiveness of sexual health interventions for people with severe mental illness: a systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Severe mental illnesses (SMIs), such as schizophrenia and bipolar disorder, persist over time and can cause extensive disability leading to impairments in social and occupational functioning. People with SMI have higher morbidity and mortality due to physical illness than the general population and may be more likely to engage in high-risk sexual behaviour (e.g. unprotected intercourse, having multiple partners, involvement in the sex trade and illicit drug use), putting them at risk of poorer sexual health outcomes including sexually transmitted infections. Sexual health promotion

Development of the Gut Microbiota throughout the First Year of Life and Its Association with Socio-Emotional Development into Childhood.

INTRODUCTION: Early life is a critical window for the development of many bodily systems, including the gut microbiota and the central nervous system, that are interconnected through the gut-brain axis. These early life gut-brain axis connections are often studied through cross-sectional cohorts, limiting insights into temporal developmental trajectories. This longitudinal cohort study assessed whether gut microbial development over the first year of life is associated with socio-emotional development into childhood. METHODS: The PRIDE (pregnancy and infant development) BIOME study (n = 81, n

Sex-specific difference on anxiety- and depressive-like behavior in neuronal growth regulator 1-knockout mice.

BACKGROUND: Sex differences are evident in anxiety and depression, and women more frequently present with comorbid anxiety and depression alongside gastrointestinal disturbances. This pattern suggests contributions from sex-specific biological mechanisms and gut-brain communication. Negr1, a molecule regulating neuronal growth and connectivity, has been linked to depression-relevant behaviors in animal models. However, its mechanisms and potential sex-specific effects remain unclear. METHODS: Behavioral tests were used to assess phenotypes related to depression, anxiety, and learning in male

Associated characteristics of multidrug-resistant tuberculosis (MDR-TB) cases in Sub-Saharan Africa: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: The persistent spread of tuberculosis (TB), driven by multidrug-resistant TB (MDR-TB), poses a major public health threat in Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA), worsening the region's already high burden of infectious disease mortality. Despite fragmented evidence, a comprehensive quantitative assessment of MDR-TB patient characteristics that fuel resistance across the continent has been limited. This study aimed to synthesize and quantify the demographic, clinical, socio-economic, and behavioral patient profiles associated with MDR-TB in SSA to inform targeted control strategies. METHODS:

Detection of hearing loss by formal audiological testing after acute infectious meningitis: a global systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Acute community-acquired bacterial meningitis remains a significant global health concern with significant mortality and morbidity, including neurological sequelae such as sensorineural hearing loss (SNHL). Early detection of meningitis-associated SNHL mitigates permanent deafness and poor outcomes, including cognitive decline, social isolation, and mental health disorders. This systematic review evaluates the optimal time point(s) to perform formal audiological diagnostic testing and follow-up in adult and pediatric meningitis patients to effectively detect hearing loss (HL) outco

Repetitive negative thinking in adolescence: a mixed methods study.

BACKGROUND: Adolescence is a critical window for preventing common mental disorders. Repetitive negative thinking (RNT) is a transdiagnostic process contributing to depression and anxiety and a key prevention target. However, little is known about adolescent experiences of RNT, especially during early adolescence. Furthermore, co-rumination, the interpersonal analogue of RNT, remains underexamined. This study characterised diverse facets of adolescent RNT and co-rumination in a self-selected community sample with elevated depression and anxiety symptoms, incorporating adolescent and parental p

Acceptability and feasibility of Reframe-IT+U for suicidal ideation in university students: protocol of a quasi-experimental pilot study.

BACKGROUND: Mental health in university students is a growing concern worldwide. In Chile, previous studies have shown high rates of depressive symptoms, anxiety, and suicidal risk in this population. This study seeks to evaluate the acceptability and feasibility of a Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)-based intervention for the indicated prevention of suicidality in undergraduate students and to explore its impact on reducing suicidal ideation. METHODS: A quasi-experimental before-and-after design will be used with a sample of students from a private university who present mild to moderate s

Recovery capital, the recovery ecosystem, and substance use among recovery high school students.

Adolescent development and substance use disorder recovery unfold within diverse contexts, where recovery capital is key to planning. This study examined the relationship between social and personal recovery capital, community recovery capital, and cannabis and alcohol use among adolescents. In this cross-sectional study, 416 students from 20 U.S. recovery high schools reported their past 90-day alcohol and cannabis use and completed the Assessment of Recovery Capital (adapted for youth readability). Student data were merged with data from the Recovery Ecosystem Index, which measures county-le

Integrating evidence and causal mapping of help-seeking behaviour of migrant women with postpartum depression in Shanghai, China: a scoping review protocol.

INTRODUCTION: The estimated prevalence of postpartum depression (PPD) worldwide, in China, and Shanghai is 17.2%, 18.0% and 23.2%, respectively. In 2021, Shanghai housed a population of 3.2 million childbearing-age migrant women, most of whom migrated to the city with their husbands for economic reasons. There is a general lack of help-seeking behaviour for mental disorders in China due to the perceived risk of social stigmatisation. In Shanghai, 70% of women did not seek professional help for perinatal mental health problems. We aim to gather information from multiple perspectives, such as th

Effectiveness of an Individual Cognitive-Behavioral Intervention for Serious, Young Male Violent Offenders: Randomized Controlled Study With Twenty-Four-Month Follow-Up.

Background: Psychological recidivism-reducing interventions with serious, young violent offenders in residential care have unsatisfactory effects. We tested if a complementary individual cognitive behavioral therapy (iCBT) intervention focusing problem-solving, cognitive self-control, and relapse prevention reduces criminal recidivism beyond usual institutional care encompassing interventions such as social skills training and prosocial modeling (treatment-as-usual; TAU). Method: We consecutively approached 115 eligible serious, male violent crime offenders in five residential treatment homes

The Impact of the COVID-19 Pandemic on Vascular Surgery Trainees in the United States.

BACKGROUND: The impact of the coronavirus disease 19 (COVID-19) pandemic on health care workers has been substantial. However, the impact on vascular surgery (VS) trainees has not yet been determined. The goals of our study were to gauge the impact of COVID-19 on VS trainees' personal and professional life and to assess stressors, coping, and support structures involved in these trainees' response to the COVID-19 pandemic. METHODS: This was an anonymous online survey administered in April 12-24, 2020 during the surge phase of the global COVID-19 pandemic. It is a subset analysis of the cross-

Pediatric traumatic brain injury and abusive head trauma.

Childhood traumatic brain injury (TBI) commonly occurs during brain development and can have direct, immediately observable neurologic, cognitive, and behavioral consequences. However, it can also disrupt subsequent brain development, and long-term outcomes are a combination of preinjury development and abilities, consequences of brain injury, as well as delayed impaired development of skills that were immature at the time of injury. There is a growing number of studies on mild TBI/sport-related concussions, describing initial symptoms and their evolution over time and providing guidelines for

Hyperthyroidism, Hypothyroidism, and Cause-Specific Mortality in a Large Cohort of Women.

BACKGROUND: The prevalence of hyperthyroidism and hypothyroidism is 0.5-4% in iodine-replete communities, but it is 5-10 times higher in women than in men. Those conditions are associated with a broad range of metabolic disorders and cardiovascular diseases. Biological evidence of a role of thyroid hormones in carcinogenesis also exists. However, the association between thyroid dysfunction and cardiovascular disease or cancer mortality risk remains controversial. In a large cohort of women, the associations of hyperthyroidism and hypothyroidism with cause-specific mortality were evaluated afte

Treatment options for fecal incontinence.

PURPOSE: Fecal incontinence is a socially devastating disorder which affects at least 2.2 percent of community dwelling adults and 45 percent of nursing home residents. Most incontinent patients can be helped, but physicians are poorly informed about treatment options. The aim of this study was to develop a consensus on treatment options by convening a conference of surgeons, gastroenterologists, nurses, psychologists, and patient advocates. METHOD: A 1-1/2 day conference was held in April, 1999. Experts from different disciplines gave overviews, followed by extended discussions. Consensus st

Internet plus-based post-discharge continuity care for mild-to-moderate depression: An exploratory study.

BACKGROUND: Depression is a prevalent global mental health disorder affecting over 300 million individuals, with studies indicating a 34% rise in cases from 2001 to 2020. In China, depression accounts for 3.0% of psychiatric disorders among adolescents, severely impairing patients' quality of life. Despite pharmacological efficacy in acute-phase treatment, post-discharge relapse rates remain high (50% within one year), highlighting the need for effective continuity-of-care interventions. Traditional follow-up models (e.g., outpatient visits or telephone calls) face limitations, including ineff
