Comparison between VII-to-VII and XII-to-VII coaptation techniques for early facial nerve reanimation after surgical intra-cranial injuries: a systematic review and pooled analysis of the functional outcomes.

The surgical injury of the intracranial portion of the facial nerve (FN) is a severe complication of many skull base procedures, and it represents a relevant issue in terms of patients' discomfort, social interactions, risk for depression, and social costs. The aim of this study was to investigate the surgical and functional outcomes of the most common facial nerve rehabilitation techniques. The present study is a systematic review of the pertinent literature, according to the PRISMA guidelines. Two different online medical databases (PubMed, Scopus) were screened for studies reporting the fun…

Preventing weakness and stiffness - A top priority for health and social care.

With growing evidence that sarcopenia, disability and frailty can be prevented with physical activity, people living with pain, stiffness and weakness due to a musculoskeletal condition should be offered physical activity as a preventive strategy. By changing beliefs and attitudes towards ageing and raising the value and importance of physical activity, disability can be avoided or delayed and the costly burden of social care lessened. The effects of ageing and the effects of muscle strength loss are often confused. Older people can increase their strength and decrease their fitness to that of

HIV-related stigma in pregnancy and early postpartum of mothers living with HIV in Ontario, Canada.

HIV-related stigma is associated with many psychological challenges; however, minimal research has explored how perceived HIV-related stigma intersects with psychosocial issues that mothers living with HIV may experience including depression, perceived stress and social isolation. The present study aims to describe the correlates and predictors of HIV-related stigma in a cohort of women living with HIV (WLWH) from across Ontario, Canada during pregnancy and early postpartum. From March 2011 to December 2012, WLWH ≥ 18 years (n = 77) completed a study instrument measuring independent variables

Anxiety and Related Disorders and Concealment in Sexual Minority Young Adults.

Sexual minorities face greater exposure to discrimination and rejection than heterosexuals. Given these threats, sexual minorities may engage in sexual orientation concealment in order to avoid danger. This social stigma and minority stress places sexual minorities at risk for anxiety and related disorders. Given that three fourths of anxiety disorder onset occurs before the age of 24, the current study investigated the symptoms of generalized anxiety disorder, social phobia, panic disorder, posttraumatic stress disorder, and depression in sexual minority young adults relative to their heteros

Strong subjective recovery as a protective factor against the effects of positive symptoms on quality of life outcomes in schizophrenia.

BACKGROUND: Interest in recovery from schizophrenia has been growing steadily, with much of the focus on remission from psychotic symptoms and a return to functioning. Less is known about the experience of subjective recovery and its relationships with other important outcomes, such as quality of life and the formation and sustenance of social connections. This study sought to address this gap in knowledge by examining the links between self perceived recovery, symptoms, and the social components of quality of life. METHODS: Sixty eight veterans with schizophrenia-spectrum disorders who were

Cancer patients on Twitter: a novel patient community on social media.

BackgroundPatients increasingly turn to the Internet for information on medical conditions, including clinical news and treatment options. In recent years, an online patient community has arisen alongside the rapidly expanding world of social media, or "Web 2.0." Twitter provides real-time dissemination of news, information, personal accounts and other details via a highly interactive form of social media, and has become an important online tool for patients. This medium is now considered to play an important role in the modern social community of online, "wired" cancer patients.ResultsFifty-o

[What is an emotion? An introduction to the study of emotions].

Human emotions are hypothetic constructs based on psychological and physiological data. According to the psychoevolutionnist theories, all emotions derive from a set of discrete basic emotions, common to human and animals, genetically determined. Basic emotions are thus considered as physiological processes based on specific neuronal circuits. On the contrary, for appraisal and social theories, emotions are psychological processes resulting from the cognitive appraisal of the stimulus-event for the well-being and objectives of the subject, and are of social origin. They develop during life, es

Identifying the long-term needs of stroke survivors using the International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health.

OBJECTIVES: To investigate how contextual factors, as described by the World Health Organisation's International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health (ICF), impact on stroke survivors' functioning and how needs are perceived in the long term after stroke. METHODS: Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 35 participants between 1 and 11 years after stroke. Data were analysed thematically using the ICF conceptual framework. RESULTS: Long-term needs related to activities of daily living, social participation, mobility aids, home adaptations, housing, financial support, re

The vicious circle of perceived stigmatization, depressiveness, anxiety, and low quality of life in substituted heroin addicts.

BACKGROUND: Perceived stigmatization of drug addicts may interact with negative mood states and thus may contribute to the maintenance of addictive behavior. METHODS: Opiate maintenance patients (n = 106) and an unselected comparison group (n = 144) rated self-report questionnaires about perceived stigmatization, quality of life (QoL), depressiveness, anxiety, self-esteem, addiction characteristics, and social support. RESULTS: 63% of opiate maintenance patients felt discriminated in contrast to 16% of the comparison group. Perceived stigmatization was rated higher by opiate maintenance pati

Functional MRI changes before and after onset of reported emotions.

The social nature of emotion is evident in the importance of facial and vocal displays in emotion-related behavior. This is the first brain-imaging study to use simulated face-to-face social interactions to evoke emotional responses and to compare valence-related activations before and after subjective onset of emotional response. Videotapes were prepared with actresses who described happy or unhappy experiences. Functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) at 1.5 T was used to acquire BOLD images in 21 healthy young adults before, after, and during viewing of the happy and sad tapes. Subjects…

Autonomic Interplay and the Bimodal Classification of Aggression: Baseline and Reactivity Profiles in Urban Adult Males.

Biological theories propose distinct physiological profiles for premeditated aggression (PM) and impulsive aggression (IA), yet prior research has relied on single-system markers that have yielded inconsistent findings, and no study has examined PNS-SNS interplay in relation to these aggression subtypes in adult samples including active offenders. This study investigated whether multisystem autonomic profiles at rest and during a modified Trier Social Stress Task differentially associated with PM and IA in a heterogeneous urban adult sample. Active offenders, demographically matched controls,

Social isolation in mid-life: associations with psychological distress, life satisfaction and self-rated health in two successive British birth cohorts.

PURPOSE: This study examines how different forms of social isolation, such as living alone, lack of community engagement, and unemployment, are associated with mental health in mid-life (ages 42-46), a life stage often overlooked when examining the impacts of social isolation. METHODS: Using longitudinal data (1999-2016) from two British birth cohort studies: 1970 British Cohort Study N = 16,585 and the 1958 National Child Development Study N = 15,806, this study investigated whether different forms of isolation have independent effects, contribute to cumulative risk, or interact additively o

Mapping Risk and Opportunity: A Space-Based Affiliation Network Analysis of Physical and Virtual Spaces Among High Risk Men.

BACKGROUND: Social and sexual networks, particularly the spaces where men who have sex with men (MSM) meet and interact, play a crucial role in shaping HIV risk and prevention behaviors. However, few studies have leveraged venue-level data to optimize the reach of targeted interventions in China. METHODS: We conducted a venue-based social network analysis among 301 MSM recruited through online platforms and time-location sampling in a major metropolitan area. Participants identified social spaces they frequented, including both physical venues and digital platforms. We characterized these spa

Using Progressive Muscle Relaxation to Increase Academic Engagement for Elementary School Students with Autism Spectrum Disorder.

Students diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) commonly struggle with self-regulation skills, which can lead to less social inclusion, difficulties with peer and teacher interactions, low academic performance and high levels of challenging behaviors. Alternatively, when students are equipped with strong self-regulatory capabilities, their social development and academic performance is enhanced, leading to improved well-being, increased attention in the classroom, and lower levels of challenging behaviors. Research suggests that the use of progressive muscle relaxation (PMR) may show pr
