Silent grief: A qualitative study on the emotional and social impact of early gestational loss.

BACKGROUND: Early gestational loss is a common event, yet its emotional and social impact is often underestimated. From the earliest weeks of pregnancy, many women develop a psychological bond with the baby and an emerging maternal identity. When miscarriage occurs, the loss is often perceived as the death of a child rather than a minor clinical episode, resulting in disenfranchised grief. AIM: To understand the emotional and social experiences of women following early gestational loss. METHODS: An interpretative phenomenological qualitative design was employed with a purposive sample of 17

"The start of something that I hope could be greater": Health information technology tools for social care.

Federal policies and professional guidelines in the United States increasingly encourage and incentivize health systems to collect and meaningfully respond to patients' social risks. In response, many health systems employ health information technology to implement, standardize, and scale these social care activities. We created and evaluated electronic health record tools to support the collection and documentation of social risk information, and the integration of this information into clinical decision-making; the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine labels these activi

The psychosocial impact of leg ulcers in patients with sickle cell disease: I don't want them to know my little secret.

BACKGROUND: Sickle cell disease (SCD) impacts millions of individuals worldwide and more than 100,000 people in the United States. Leg ulcers are the most common cutaneous manifestation of SCD. The health status of individuals living with chronic leg ulcers is not only influenced by clinical manifestations such as pain duration and intensity, but also by psychosocial factors. Garnering insights into the psychosocial impact can provide a more holistic view of their influence on quality of life.
