The replacement of Gly90 by Asp in human rhodopsin causes congenital night blindness. It is believed that pineal calcification may be age-associated and that the well-demonstrated age-related decline in melatonin biosynthesis may be an expression of an alteration in calcium homeostasis in the pinealocyte. Near infrared spectroscopy is a relatively new technique for monitoring intracerebral oxygen saturation. Using the technique, three episodes of cerebral hypoxia were detected during elective carotid endarterectomy which were not reliably recorded by more standard monitoring of cerebral perfusion. Estrogen effects on pineal secretion of melatonin are controversial. Some feel that estrogen inhibits melatonin output in vitro but not in vivo. Melatonin levels vary with the age in chickens where circulating estrogen levels also vary. Laying hens have minimal melatonin levels and maximal serum iron concentrations. Thus, we reasoned that iron released by estrogen may inhibit melatonin secretion from the chick pineal gland. The present study shows that perifusion of estrogen-treated chick pineal glands with several concentrations of iron greatly inhibited melatonin secretion.

A method is described for estimating plasma and urinary hemoglobin concentrations as low as 3 mg/L. The assay measures at 528 nm the rate of peroxidation of chlorpromazine by hemoglobin and is not affected by ascorbate and bilirubin concentrations up to 500 mumol/L. Results by this method (mean +/- SD: 54.4 +/- 41.6 mg/L; n = 19) correlated well with those by a scanning spectrophotometric method (52.5 +/- 41.6 mg/L; r = 0.96) and a Coulter Instrument method (r = 0.99; Coulter method: 125 +/- 15 g/L; rate method: 122 +/- 15 g/L; n = 10, r = 0.99). Propylthiouracil (PTU) is associated with idiosyncratic agranulocytosis that may be due to reactive metabolites generated from oxidative metabolism by neutrophils. We discuss over 120 laboratory experiments pertaining to the identification of the new absorption band discovered by Trafton et al. (1991) at 4705.2 cm-1 (2.1253 micrometers) in the spectrum of Io. It is shown that this band is not due to overtones or combinations of the fundamental bands associated with the molecules (or their chemical complexes) already identified on Io, namely, SO2, H2S, and H2O.
