Elective mutism in a first grader: the remediation of a complex behavioral problem.

Teachers frequently deal with unusual and perplexing behavioral problems in their classes. This study demonstrates how spontaneous and prompted speech were produced in a six-year-old mute by a first-grade teacher and her aide. A reinforcement system for peer-prompted speech and spontaneous speech was employed in three separate school classes in a multiple-baseline fashion. The reinforcement system produced prompted and spontaneous speech in each situation. Postchecks in the second grade indicated the child was still speaking and conversing spontaneously with his peers. This study suggests a me

Transforming dental education: interactive and student-centered learning with team-based learning in the undergraduate program.

World-wide, educational curricula have made a transition toward (inter)active student-centered learning and teaching. To incorporate consistency within a curricular reform, it is important to make choices that are applied to all courses. Here we describe the implementation of team-based learning (TBL), an effective educational approach for activated learning at a dental school. TBL stimulates students to participate actively in their own learning process. This team-oriented method fosters problem solving, critical academic reasoning, clinical decision-making and communication skills among stud…

Digital Mental Health Screening, Feedback, and Referral System for Teens With Socially Complex Needs: Protocol for a Randomized Controlled Trial Integrating the Teen Assess, Check, and Heal System into Pediatric Primary Care.

BACKGROUND: Teens with socially complex needs-those who face multiple and potentially overlapping adversities-are disproportionately affected by several barriers to mental health screening and treatment. Pediatric primary care (PPC) is a typically low-stigmatized setting for teens that is visited at least annually. As such, implementing digital mental health tools (DMH), as low-intensity treatments in PPCs may increase the reach of such tools for teens with socially complex needs. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to evaluate the Teen Assess, Check, and Heal (TeACH) System in comparison to a contro

Effect of training on navigated frameless and frame-based stereotactic brain biopsies: a retrospective comparison of staff neurosurgeon and trainee perioperative performance and complications.

BACKGROUND: Resident physicians should be integrated early into a broad spectrum of surgical procedures during postgraduate training. At the same time, medical standards must be maintained and patient safety ensured. This study investigates whether resident involvement in stereotactic brain biopsy affects perioperative performance and complications. METHODS: This retrospective, two-center study compared 217 consecutive patients undergoing navigated frameless and frame-based stereotactic brain biopsies performed either by a supervised neurosurgery resident (teaching cases) or by a BCFN (non-te…

Structured phantom-assisted simulation for early abdominal ultrasound skill training in ultrasound medicine residents: a quasi-experimental study.

BACKGROUND: Abdominal ultrasound is a core component of residency training in ultrasound medicine, yet opportunities for repetitive and standardized bedside practice are often limited in routine clinical settings. Although simulation-based teaching may help address this gap, evidence remains limited regarding the role of abdominal ultrasound phantom training in standardized residency curricula. This study evaluated whether integrating structured phantom-assisted simulation into routine residency teaching was associated with improved early abdominal ultrasound skill acquisition and clinically o…

A core competency framework for point-of-care ultrasound education: Guidelines for curriculum development.

The clinical utility of diagnostic point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS) has rapidly grown across medical specialties, prompting many medical schools to develop and implement POCUS curricula. However, teaching ultrasound image acquisition is challenging as it requires psychomotor skills, hand-eye coordination, and hand stability; leading to a higher cognitive load. Despite this, POCUS curricula have largely focused on other aspects, such as identifying clinically relevant POCUS examinations. To address this gap, the authors of this article developed a competency-EPA matrix framework for POCUS educa…
