'Anti-malaria month'--a step forward in multisectoral collaboration and community involvement in malaria control.

For a long time malaria control in India has largely been a government responsibility with little involvement of the community at large, and other sectors of the economy in the control efforts. There is now increasing realisation that involvement of the community and a multi-sectoral approach should be essential components of the malaria control strategy. The National Malaria Eradication Programme is accordingly laying greater emphasis on coordination with other sectors of the economy, and changing community perceptions and health-related behaviour. A massive programme of community mobilisatio

The psychobiology of eating behavior in anorexia nervosa.

Two models for conceptualizing eating behavior are presented and the development of the experimental methodology to examine eating behavior is described in historical context. Specific studies of eating behavior in eating disorder patients are described with emphasis on how these studies examine aspects of the two hypothetical models that are presented on eating behavior. The studies present and focus on hunger and satiety perceptions, cognitive sets, and the neurotransmitter associated with satiety, serotonin. Unfortunately, no single investigation can encompass all of the variables that need

Laugh it off. The effect of humor on the well-being of the older adult.

1. Laughter releases excessive physical and psychological energy, and it reduces stress, anxiety, worry, and frustration. Humor as a skillful nursing intervention can enhance the overall well-being of older adults. 2. If the timing is inappropriate, humor can be a destructive rather than constructive intervention, especially in nursing situations where embarrassing, sensitive, or emotion-laden issues are at hand. 3. This study found that as one ages, one's self-perception of health seems to decrease. Therefore, nurses need to promote a positive outlook toward the aging process and one's own he

Intimacy and depression in older women.

This study examines the effects of the qualities of intimate relationships on depression in older women. The data are from a study of women over 50, randomly selected from five census tracts in Madison, Wisconsin, who were given questionnaires about depression and the quality of their intimate relationships on two occasions (summer of 1978 and summer of 1979). The results showed that some dimensions of the relationships that the women described with their most significant others predicted depression. The more depressed the women were, the more they felt that (1) the relationship was less frien

The importance of perceived care and connectedness with friends and parents for adolescent social anxiety.

Nonclinical social anxiety in adolescence can be highly problematic, as it likely affects current and especially new social interactions. Relationships with significant others, such as close friends, mothers, and fathers, could aid socially anxious adolescents' participation in social situations, thereby helping reduce feelings of social anxiety. We examined whether making friends as well as high friendship quality help reduce social anxiety over time, and whether friends', mothers', and fathers' care interact in reducing social anxiety. Using longitudinal data from 2,194 participants in a soc

The validity of a simple outcome measure to assess stuttering therapy.

OBJECTIVE: The validity of a simple and not time-consuming self-assessment (SA) Scale was tested to establish progress after or during stuttering therapy. PATIENTS AND METHOD: The scores on the SA scale were related to (1) objective measures (percentage of stuttered syllables, and syllables per minute) and (2) (self-)evaluation tests (self-evaluation questionnaires and perceptual evaluations or judgments of disfluency, naturalness and comfort by naïve listeners). Data were collected from two groups of stutterers at four measurement times: pretherapy, posttherapy, 12 months after therapy and 2

AI-enhanced intraoperative decision-making in robotic surgery: from augmented reality navigation to foundation models.

Robotic surgical platforms have improved instrument dexterity, tremor filtration, and ergonomic control, yet intraoperative decisions still depend on a surgeon interpreting a moving, partially observed field under time pressure. Artificial intelligence (AI) is increasingly used to close parts of this loop by recognizing anatomy, tracking instruments, anticipating events, and-experimentally-planning or executing selected actions. This review maps the computational technologies that support intraoperative decision-making in robotic surgery and appraises the clinical evidence for them.Because the

CMRA-DETR: a lightweight and high-accuracy detection framework for MRI-based brain tumor identification.

INTRODUCTION: Brain tumor lesions in MRI images are characterized by low contrast, indistinct boundaries, and irregular morphology, posing substantial challenges for automated detection. RT-DETR provides an end-to-end, NMS-free detection paradigm, but its original design is optimized for natural images and exhibits three domain-specific limitations in brain tumor MRI detection: insufficient local texture perception of low-contrast lesion boundaries, neglect of feature magnitude differences in linear attention, and weak modeling of spatial continuity for morphologically irregular tumors. This s

Chemosensory Impairments and Their Impact on Nutrition in Parkinson's Disease: A Narrative Literature Review.

Parkinson's disease (PD) is a neurological disorder characterized by heterogeneous symptomatology, in which the classical motor features of Parkinsonism are associated with clinically significant non-motor symptoms. Olfactory alteration, as a manifestation of PD's premotor or prodromal phase, is well known. These impairments can lead to malnutrition, decreased appetite, and depression, thereby worsening patients' quality of life. However, only a few studies clarify the mechanisms, characteristics, and clinical diagnostic and therapeutic implications of impaired taste perception. Moreover, unli

Self /other recognition and distinction in adolescents with anorexia nervosa: A pilot study using a double mirror paradigm.

BACKGROUND: Abnormalities in body perception in patients affected by anorexia nervosa have been widely studied, but without explicit reference to their relationship to others and the social processes involved. Yet, there are a several arguments supporting impairments in interpersonal relationships in these patients. Notably, some evidence suggests that self/other distinction (SOD), the ability to distinguish one's own body, actions and mental representations from those of others could be impaired. But research remains scarce in this area. MATERIAL AND METHODS: A single-centre, prospective pil

Demographic characteristics and visual prognosis of open globe ınjuries in an ındustrialized region of Turkey, east Thrace.

BACKGROUND: Open globe injuries cause monocular blindness in young and active populations in industrial areas, resulting in significant loss of work capacity. Determining demographic data and prognostic factors related to these injuries in Eastern Thrace, an industrial region of Türkiye, is crucial for developing preventive strategies and improving final visual acuity. METHODS: Patients who underwent surgical repair due to open globe injury between December 2014 and April 2025 were retrospectively reviewed. Demographic features, cause, time, location of injury, type of occurrence, previous pa

A prospective investigation of the effects of soccer heading on cognitive and sensorimotor performances in semi-professional female players.

INTRODUCTION: Repetitive head impacts (RHI) from routine soccer (football) heading have been suggested to contribute to the long-term development of neurodegenerative disorders. However, scientific evidence concerning the actual risk of these RHI on brain health remains inconclusive. Moreover, female athletes-despite a presumably increased vulnerability toward the effects of RHI-are largely underrepresented in previous approaches. Therefore, our aim was to prospectively investigate the effects of heading on cognitive and sensorimotor performances, health perception, and concussion symptoms in

The avian taste system.

Taste or gustation is the sense evolving from the chemo-sensory system present in the oral cavity of avian species, which evolved to evaluate the nutritional value of foods by detecting relevant compounds including amino acids and peptides, carbohydrates, lipids, calcium, salts, and toxic or anti-nutritional compounds. In birds compared to mammals, due to the relatively low retention time of food in the oral cavity, the lack of taste papillae in the tongue, and an extremely limited secretion of saliva, the relevance of the avian taste system has been historically undermined. However, in recent

Swine industry stakeholders' perception on the use of water-based foam as an emergency mass depopulation method.

The U.S. pork supply chain is vulnerable to various internal and external threats and in need of prompt, comprehensive response plans. Under urgent circumstances, for example in the case of foreign disease incursions, swine farms will have to perform on-farm animal depopulation to prevent disease spread. Several animal depopulation methods including water-based foam (WBF) have been proposed and are under evaluation for feasibility in the field. However, the psychological/emotional impacts of applying depopulation methods for personnel managing and carrying on the tasks are not currently well u

Feasibility of Universal Screening for Preeclampsia Risk and Aspirin Recommendation in the Ultrasound Unit.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the feasibility and impact of using the first-trimester ultrasound visit to identify and counsel women at increased risk of preeclampsia about the benefits of low-dose aspirin (LDA) for preventing preeclampsia. We also assessed patient-reported utilization of LDA, perceived risk for preeclampsia, and clinical outcomes. STUDY DESIGN: Women presenting for routine first-trimester nuchal-translucency (NT) ultrasounds were screened for clinical preeclampsia risks using a self-administered risk assessment. Women at moderate or high risk for preeclampsia were counseled to take

Patient-reported experience with hypoglossal nerve stimulation in the treatment of obstructive sleep apnea.

BACKGROUND: Breathing-synchronized hypoglossal nerve stimulation (HNS) is routinely used as an alternative treatment for patients with obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). Significant and clinically relevant improvements in disease severity and OSA symptoms such as daytime sleepiness as well as overall quality of life have been reported in randomized-controlled trials and large real-world cohort studies. However, so far, few data exist on patient-reported experience with the treatment. METHODS: A structured survey with 22 questions was constructed using five-level Likert scales (1 = no agreement, 5
