The dental health of single male hostel dwellers in Leeds.

Attitudes and behaviour towards oral health among 104 homeless men in Leeds were assessed at interview. Of these, 101 agreed to a subsequent dental examination. The findings confirmed a high level of normative need despite a low level of felt need. Appointments were offered at two local community dental clinics, but the majority of men failed to attend. Appropriate provision of dental care is discussed and recommendations made for future developments.

Black Stains: a microbiological analysis and a view on familiarity and susceptibility to tooth decay of patients in childhood.

AIM: Assess prevalence, familial predisposition and susceptibility to caries of Black Stains (BS). Evaluate the microbiological composition of BS, saliva and subgingival plaque. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Sixty nine subjects with BS (test group) and 120 subjects without BS (control group) were analysed for oral status. For each BS-patient, a BS-deposit, 1 ml of saliva and subgingival plaque were collected and microbiologically analysed. Five deciduous teeth with BS were observed under SEM. RESULTS: This study showed a BS prevalence similar to that of the Mediterranean area and a familiality. The

Early-life factors affect risk of pain and fever in infants during teething periods.

AIM: This longitudinal study aimed to investigate the prevalence of teething-related pain and fever and the early-life factors that may affect the risk of experiencing these disturbances within the first 1.5 years of life. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Participants were recruited (n = 1033) through the Growing Up in Singapore Towards healthy Outcomes (GUSTO) birth cohort (n = 1237). Interviews were performed tri-monthly regarding the prevalence of teething pain and fever in children from 6 to 18 months of age. Crude and multivariable analyses were conducted using Poisson-log regression models. RESU

The prognostic value of histopathology on lingual nerve neurosensory recovery after micro-neurosurgery.

OBJECTIVE: Micro-neurosurgical repair is considered in permanent nerve damage but the outcome is unpredictable. We examined if histopathologic parameters of traumatic neuromas have a prognostic value for recovery in relation to lingual nerve micro-neurosurgery. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Retrospective case study on neurosensory recovery after micro-neurosurgery. Outcome variables were as follows: pain perception, two-point discrimination, and sum score of perception, before and 12 months after micro-neurosurgery. Predictive histopathology variables included size, nerve tissue, and inflammation. S

Oral health and impact on performance of athletes participating in the London 2012 Olympic Games: a cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Oral health is important both for well-being and successful elite sporting performance. Reports from Olympic Games have found significant treatment needs; however, few studies have examined oral health directly. The aim of this study was to evaluate oral health, the determinants of oral health and the effect of oral health on well-being, training and performance of athletes participating in the London 2012 Games. METHODS: Cross-sectional study at the dental clinic within the Polyclinic in the athletes' village. Following informed consent, a standardised history, clinical examinati

[Dentigerous cyst in the mixed dentition].

Dentigerous cyst is a developmental odontogenic cyst, which apparently develops by accumulation of fluid between the reduced enamel epithelium and the tooth crown of an unerupted tooth. Management of dentigerous cyst in primary dentition needs special consideration regarding the preservation of the developing permanent tooth buds. A case of dentigerous cyst is reported in primary dentition of a 7-year-old female patient and its management. By extracting the infected primary teeth, opening the cyst and ensuring continuous drainage, it is possible to achieve spontaneous eruption of the involved

Maxillary cementoblastoma--a rarity.

BACKGROUND: This paper highlights the unusual and rare presentation of a cementoblastoma in the maxilla. It also discusses a review on this odontogenic pathology. CASE REPORT: We present a cementoblastoma appearing in an atypical site in a young girl. The presenting clinical features with radiologic features are reviewed. Also discussed is an approach to radiological interpretation. To the best of our knowledge, this is only the seventeenth case to be reported in literature. DISCUSSION: Cementoblastoma is a benign true neoplasm which forms a mass of cementum or cementum-like tissue on the ro

Advantages of the root submergence technique for pontic site development in esthetic implant therapy.

A single-tooth implant in the esthetic region has good potential for success, but it is still challenging to restore multiple-tooth defects with implant-supported prostheses that resemble the natural dentition. This article suggests a strategy to provide a more predictable protocol for esthetic implant treatment for multiple-tooth defects using the root submergence technique (RST). By maintaining the natural tooth root with the RST a much greater amount of surrounding tissue may be preserved than with the commonly used socket preservation technique, which almost always leads to crestal bone re

The effect of mineral trioxide aggregate on the apexification and periapical healing of teeth with incomplete root formation.

AIM: To evaluate the influence of mineral trioxide aggregate (MTA) on apexification and periapical healing of teeth in dogs with incomplete root formation and previously contaminated canals and to verify the necessity of employing calcium hydroxide paste before using MTA. METHODOLOGY: Twenty premolars from two 6-month old dogs were used. After access to the root canals and complete removal of the pulp, the canal systems remained exposed to the oral environment for 2 weeks. Canal preparation was then carried out using Hedström files, under irrigation with 1% sodium hypochlorite, 1 mm short of

Spontaneous correction of pathologic tooth migration and reduced infrabony pockets following nonsurgical periodontal therapy: a case report.

This case report describes the spontaneous correction of pathologic tooth migration and reduced infrabony pockets after nonsurgical periodontal therapy. A 3-mm diastema between the maxillary incisors was closed completely, and the mandibular teeth, which had migrated pathologically, returned to the optimal position. Clinical evaluation showed a significant reduction in probing depth, with increased clinical attachment and bone deposition demonstrated radiologically.

Periodontal disease associated with Langerhans' cell histiocytosis: case report.

A clinical case of Langerhans' cell histiocytosis, type eosinophilic granuloma, in a young adult patient is presented. Because of the occurrence of oral manifestations in initial stages of the disease, there is a need for a differential diagnosis, especially with the early-onset periodontitis.

Hyper-IgE syndrome with recurrent infections--an autosomal dominant multisystem disorder.

BACKGROUND: The hyper-IgE syndrome with recurrent infections is a rare immunodeficiency characterized by recurrent skin and pulmonary abscesses and extremely elevated levels of IgE in serum. Associated facial and skeletal features have been recognized, but their frequency is unknown, and the genetic basis of the hyper-IgE syndrome is poorly understood. METHODS: We studied 30 patients with the hyper-IgE syndrome and 70 of their relatives. We took histories, reviewed records, performed physical and dental examinations, took anthropometric measurements, and conducted laboratory studies. RESULTS

Intrasocket reactive soft tissue for primary closure after augmentation of extraction sites with severe bone loss before implant placement.

PURPOSE: The normal bone resorption after tooth extraction can be significantly aggravated in the case of pre-existing severe bone loss and chronic infection. Bone augmentation procedures have been proposed, but they require adequate closure of soft tissues. We propose the use of intrasocket reactive tissue to cover extraction sites augmented by bovine bone mineral graft to promote the success of the graft procedure. PATIENTS AND METHODS: The study included 24 patients with severe bone loss and chronic pathology in 27 sites. The intrasocket reactive soft tissue was elevated from the bony wall
