Metoprolol or Verapamil in the Management of Patients With Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy: A Systematic Review.

Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) is the most common genetic heart disease and is a prevalent cause of sudden cardiac death (SCD). This study aims to establish the benefits and therapeutic value metoprolol or verapamil offer to patients who suffer from symptoms caused by HCM, with regard to resolving left ventricular outflow tract obstruction (LVOTO), as well as improving a patient's quality of life and reducing symptoms. We conducted a systematic review to find clinical studies that described the use of metoprolol or verapamil in the management of HCM. Three databases were analyzed for studie

An evaluation of value-based outcomes for women admitted to a dialectical behaviour therapy integrated practice unit: a follow-up study.

BACKGROUND: An earlier evaluation (Fox et al., ) highlighted reductions in risk behaviours and restrictive practices for women admitted to low secure dialectical behaviour therapy (DBT) unit. Since then, a value-based healthcare model has been adopted. AIMS: To explore changes in health, social and psychological functioning, risk, quality of life, and in incidents of violence and restrictive practices, over the initial 12-month period of admission to a specialist DBT service. METHOD: Data were extracted from electronic clinical records for 41 women with emotionally unstable personality disor

A Reference-Dependent Computational Model of Anorexia Nervosa.

Influential accounts interpret anorexia as arising from perfectionism, dichotomous thinking, and poor control expressed in a variety of life domains, resulting in low self-esteem. In this context, restraining eating would allow patients to re-establish some control and self-esteem. Although this view has offered important insight, one shortcoming is that constructs such as perfectionism, control, and dichotomous thinking, remain poorly specified. To clarify these constructs, we propose a computational model of anorexia. This relies on previous theories of evaluation, which highlight its refere

Muscle atrophy in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease: molecular basis and potential therapeutic targets.

Patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) experience several systemic manifestations such skeletal muscle dysfunction with and without muscle mass loss. Moreover, frequent comorbidities such as nutritional abnormalities, heart failure, and pulmonary hypertension, which are frequently associated with COPD may further contribute to skeletal muscle mass loss and dysfunction. Muscle dysfunction impairs the patients' exercise capacity and quality of life as daily life activities may be hampered by this problem. Importantly, impaired muscle function and mass loss have been shown to

From genotype to phenotype in Dravet disease.

Dravet syndrome combines clonic generalized, focal or unilateral seizures, beginning within the first year of life, often triggered by hyperthermia whatever its cause, including pertussis vaccination. Long-lasting febrile seizures are frequent in infancy and repeat status epilepticus (SE) has negative prognostic value. Massive myoclonus, rare absences, complex partial seizures and generalized spikes may appear several years later. Myoclonic status may occur in childhood, but acute encephalopathy with febrile SE followed by ischemic lesions and psychomotor impairment, the most severe condition,

Metabolic Imprinting and Intergenerational Cardiometabolic Risk in Human Populations: Implications for Preconception and Maternal Health.

The global rise in obesity and type 2 diabetes has been too rapid to be explained by genetic change alone, which points to developmental and environmental contributions to cardiometabolic risk. Metabolic conditions during sensitive windows, particularly preconception, pregnancy, and early postnatal life, appear to shape long-term metabolic regulation and disease susceptibility. In this narrative review, we synthesise human cohort studies, natural experiments, and experimental models, and we translate the resulting evidence into clinical and public health practice. Across human cohorts, materna

The efficacy and safety of dupilumab for moderate-to-severe asthma: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

UNLABELLED: Asthma poses a heavy global health burden, and severe cases are poorly controlled by conventional therapy. Dupilumab is indicated for patients aged ≥6 years with severe eosinophilic or type 2 asthma. Patients with different baseline characteristics may respond differently to this agent. Therefore, a comprehensive analysis of its efficacy and safety was performed. PubMed, EMBASE, the Cochrane Library, and ClinicalTrials.gov were searched from database inception to January 28, 2026. Only randomized controlled trials (RCTs) of dupilumab for moderate-to-severe asthma were included; non

Lessons learned through childhood cancer: An AI- enhanced PhotoArt-based qualitative study of parental growth and meaning-making.

PURPOSE: This qualitative phenomenological study explores how parents of children diagnosed with cancer construct meaning from their caregiving experiences, the lessons they derive, and how these experiences contribute to their growth. Using a descriptive phenomenological design, the study employed AI-generated PhotoArt to elicit and enrich parents' narratives, facilitating metaphorical expression and deepening narrative insight. By shifting the focus from distress to meaning, the study highlights caregiving as a site of personal growth, value reorientation, and life learning." METHOD: Sixtee

Contextual elaboration shapes object recognition memory across levels of childhood adversity in healthy adults.

Childhood adversity is a known risk factor for psychopathology across the lifespan. One proposed mechanism involves long-term alterations in hippocampal memory systems, leading to disruptions in the integration of episodic memory within its contextual framework. It is therefore essential to investigate how individuals exposed to early life stress use contextual information during memory formation. We conducted an experimental study in healthy adults (n = 76), manipulating the depth of contextual encoding. Participants viewed object-background pairs under either contextual or object-focused con

Exploring needs and priorities in digital health management for rare disease patients and their caregivers: A mixed-methods study.

Rare diseases affect millions worldwide and are associated with long diagnostic delays, limited access to treatments, and substantial challenges in daily care and coordination. Digital health technologies, including mobile apps, tele health, and data‑sharing platforms, offer opportunities to improve care and quality of life for people living with rare diseases. As these tools rapidly expand, this study examines the needs, expectations, and conditions for successful adoption of patient‑centered digital solutions among individuals living with rare diseases and their families. Using a mixed‑metho

Growth and survival of heat-, cold-, and acid-stressed Salmonella Typhimurium and native bacteria on chicken wings during refrigerated storage and temperature abuse.

During food processing, Salmonella is frequently exposed to environmental stresses that may alter its growth and survival, thereby influencing food safety and accuracy of microbial risk assessment. This study investigated the behavior of Salmonella Typhimurium (ST), unstressed (USST), heat-stressed (HSST), cold-stressed (CSST), and acid-stressed (ASST) on chicken wings and developed models to predict shelf life during storage at 4, 10, and 20°C. At all temperatures, native bacteria (NB) grew and were modeled using a no-lag phase (primary) model and Ratkowsky square-root (secondary) model for c

Beyond pay and balance: organizational support as a driver of professional development across generations in the Chilean mining industry.

INTRODUCTION: Professional development is increasingly recognized as a key component of sustainable careers, particularly in demanding sectors such as mining. However, limited evidence exists on how perceived organizational support relates to professional development, pay satisfaction, and work-life balance across generational cohorts in this context. METHODS: This study examined the relationship between Perceived Organizational Support (POS) and Professional Development (PD) in Chile' s mining sector and explored whether POS was associated with Pay Satisfaction (PS) and Work-Life Balance (WL

Baseline immune status associates respiratory viral infection in preterm infants: A prospective cohort study.

Preterm infants (PI) are particularly vulnerable to respiratory viral infections (RVI), which may affect their lung development and immune responses, increasing the risk of recurrent wheezing (RW) and asthma. This study aimed to evaluate the cytokine immune profile in PI admitted to neonatal intensive care units (NICUs) and to explore its association with RVI and subsequent respiratory outcomes during the first year of life. A prospective cohort of 118 PI (<32 weeks gestational age) was studied in 2 NICUs. Nasopharyngeal aspirates were collected at birth and discharge for virological and immun

Rumination as a within-person indirect pathway between daily negative life events and suicidal ideation in recently hospitalized adults.

Negative life events are often implicated as a near-term risk factor for suicidal ideation (SI); however ruminative processes may play a critical role in amplifying the distress following experiences of negative life events, ultimately leading to greater suicide risk. In the present work, we examined whether rumination indirectly impacted the association between negative events and SI intensity in a day-level ecological momentary assessment (EMA) study. Participants (N = 107; Mage = 35.9 years, 65% female, 81% white) completed an EMA protocol for 65 days following psychiatric hospitalization.

Living with Atopic Dermatitis as a Young Adult in Relation to Health-related Quality of Life and Healthcare Contacts: A Population-based Study.

Most studies of health-related quality of life (HRQoL) and atopic dermatitis are based on data from dermatology clinics. The aim of this study was to determine whether atopic dermatitis affects HRQoL in adolescence and young adulthood, based on data from the population-based cohort BAMSE (Children, Allergy, Environmental, Stockholm, Epidemiology). A further aim was to determine if the use of topical corticosteroids and healthcare contacts affect HRQoL. Participants with data from birth to young adulthood (n=3,064) were included. Two generic instruments were used to measure HRQoL:General Health

Serum propylthiouracil concentration in patients with Graves' disease with various clinical course.

The serum levels of propylthiouracil (PTU) were determined by radioimmunoassay in 10 normal subjects and in 11 patients with Graves' disease after a single 100 or 200 mg oral dose of PTU. The serum half-life of PTU in the normal subjects and in hyperthyroid patients with uneventful clinical course was 75 +/- 19 min (mean +/- SD, n = 6) and 73 +/- 13 min (n = 7), respectively. Maximum serum PTU concentrations were usually attained within 1 h after a single 200 mg oral dose and at 1 h were 5.3 +/- 1.4 micrograms/ml (3.1 +/- 0.82 X 10(-5) M) in normal subjects (n = 6) and 4.8 +/- 2.4 micrograms/m

Is the Second to Fourth Digit Ratio (2D:4D) a Biomarker of Sex-Steroids Activity?

The second-to-fourth digit ratio (2D:4D) has been used as an indirect method to investigate the putative effects of prenatal exposure to androgens, and has been reported to be smaller in males than in females. This gender difference in digit length ratios has been linked with the in utero balance of androgens to oestrogen. This sexual dimorphism in 2D:4D ratios is apparent by 2 years of age and seems to be established early in life, possibly by the 14th week of gestation. Digits in females attain their maximum length at about 2.2 years (dextral subjects) or 5.1 years (sinistral subjects) earli
