Children with dyslexia often exhibit increased variability in sensory and cognitive aspects of hearing relative to typically developing peers. Assistive listening devices (classroom FM systems) may reduce auditory processing variability by enhancing acoustic clarity and attention. We assessed the impact of classroom FM system use for 1 year on auditory neurophysiology and reading skills in children with dyslexia. FM system use reduced the variability of subcortical responses to sound, and this improvement was linked to concomitant increases in reading and phonological awareness. Moreover, resp

The ability to identify stop consonants from brief onset spectra was compared between a group of Chinese children with phonological dyslexia (the PD group, with a mean age of 10 years 4 months) and a group of chronological age-matched control children. The linguistic context, which included vowels and speakers, and durations of stop onset spectra were varied. Children with PD showed lower identification accuracy and exhibited a smaller vowel context effect for some stop-vowel combinations compared with the chronological age-matched control group. Further analyses revealed that the PD group had

The aim of the study was to establish the effects of the vocal therapy by manual compression of the larynx on dysphonia due to a partial laryngectomy and compare them with the effects of the standard vocal therapy. The prospective study included 66 patients submitted to any partial laryngectomy type. The patients were randomly classified into two groups: Group I (33) receiving the standard vocal therapy, and Group II (33) submitted to larynx compression vocal therapy. The 6-week vocal treatment was performed. The treatment effects were evaluated by subjective and objective voice analysis metho

In a previous study, the authors identified final plosive voicing contrast as the highest single error source in dysarthria associated with Friedreich's Ataxia in a group of Irish English-speaking participants. This study aimed to determine the acoustic features underlying misperceptions of voicing status and implications for clinical management. Words with final plosives were extracted from recordings of ten speakers with Friedreich's Ataxia. Various measures of the syllable rhyme were compared with intelligibility scores. Vowel duration, voicing in the closure, F1 frequency at mid-vowel and

In a simple model, the reed of the clarinet is mechanically loaded by the series combination of the acoustical impedances of the instrument itself and of the player's airway. Here we measure the complex impedance spectrum of players' airways using an impedance head adapted to fit inside a clarinet mouthpiece. A direct current shunt with high acoustical resistance allows players to blow normally, so the players can simulate the tract condition under playing conditions. The reproducibility of the results suggest that the players' "muscle memory" is reliable for this task. Most players use a sing

Noise has been commonly thought to degrade the performance of sensory systems. However, it is now clear that the detection and transmission of weak signals in sensory systems can be enhanced by noise via stochastic resonance (SR). In hair cells, the quality of mechanoelectrical transduction is enhanced up to twofold by nanometer level mechanical noise acting on the hair bundle. We wanted to know whether these gains could be preserved, perhaps even enhanced, as information flows across hair cell synapses, and into the stream of action potentials that in the frog conveys acoustic information to

We tested whether listeners are differentially responsive to the presence or absence of voicing, a salient, distinguishing acoustic feature, in laughter. Each of 128 participants rated 50 voiced and 20 unvoiced laughs twice according to one of five different rating strategies. Results were highly consistent regardless of whether participants rated their own emotional responses, likely responses of other people, or one of three perceived attributes concerning the laughers, thus indicating that participants were experiencing similarly differentiated affective responses in all these cases. Patients with bilateral total deafness due to lesions of the vestibulocochlear nerve can be treated by electrical stimulation of the second auditory neuron. A 22-channel multi-electrode implant with transcutaneous transmission was developed that allows the selection of the most useful electrodes. Acoustic neuromas were removed from 49 out of 58 patients by ENT surgeons and neurosurgeons working in collaboration and using either a translabyrinthine or suboccipital approach. The central electroauditory prosthesis was implanted in the same procedure. Six patients were deaf after previous acoustic

PURPOSE: Facial nerve monitoring is often used to predict postoperative facial function after acoustic neuroma tumor removal. In this study, three methods of predicting facial nerve function were compared. These methods used various parameters of the evoked electromyographic monitoring.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Thirty-four patients who underwent surgery for acoustic neuroma were retrospectively reviewed. Amplitude of ongoing electromyographic activity, stimulation current thresholds, and the amplitude of evoked response were analyzed. The predictive value of the three methods was compared with

In vowel height contrasts, tongue height and soft palate height covary. A series of vowel classification experiments examined the perceptual interactions between F1 and nasalization, the principal acoustic correlates of these articulations. Listeners classified imperfectly discriminable stimuli in the set of tasks that compose the Garner paradigm. Detection-theoretic models applied to the data led to the conclusion that vowels, whether in isolation, before oral consonants, or before nasal consonants, display integrality of F1 and nasalization. The contrary conclusion reached by Krakow et al. [

A complaint about a malfunctioning hearing aid (HA) usually will require thorough testing of all aspects of hearing aid functions by the hearing aid dispenser. However, ENT physicians can also detect defects easily by following the simple screening procedure described here. Before testing the HA function, the following questions should be answered: Are the body of the hearing aid and ear mold intact? Is the ear canal free of irritation and is the acoustic isolation of the ear canal by the HA sufficient? A rough estimate of HA function can be accomplished by covering the HA with the hand. If th

The efferent pathways exert a control action on the function of the cochlear nucleus and hair cells. Acetylcholine is the neurotransmitter of the centrifugal system and its action can be blocked by Atropine. In order to give a contribution to the knowledge of the function of the efferent bundle, Auditory Brainstem Responses (ABRs) and Acoustic Reflex Latencies (ARLs) have been examined in 10 young normal subjects there was also a decrease in latency greater than or equal to 100 microseconds by at least other two waves. The only statistically significant difference was relative to the latency m

The distribution of vestibular efferent neurons projecting to the saccule and efferent neurons transmitting axons to the acoustic nerve (cochlear efferent neurons) has been studied in guinea pig by comparison using the method of retrograde axonal transport of horseradish peroxidase. The saccular efferent neurons are revealed bilaterally in the subendymal granular fundus of the fourth ventricle of the brain and more laterally of the facial nerve genu, ipsilaterally in the small-celled reticular nucleus as well as in nuclei of the supraolivary complex: nucleus of lateral oliva and lateral nucleu

The effect of sensorineural hearing loss upon stapedius reflex growth functions was studied in the elderly. The reflex activators were pure tones (500, 1000, and 2000 Hz) and broadband noise; reflex magnitude was expressed in decibels relative to static acoustic impedance. When expressed in decibels relative to reflex threshold, the mean growth functions of the elderly were reduced compared to previous data for young subjects [Silman, Popelka, and Gelfand, J. Acoust. Soc. Am. 64, 1406--1411 (1978)] and the noise functions differed in terms of both shape and magnitude. When expressed in SPL, th

Possible effects of extreme variations of oxygen concentration from 0% to 100% in the tympanic lumen on inner ear function were investigated through animal experiments. The experiments were performed with Ketanest anaesthetized cats under short-time acoustic irradiation (3 min 115 dB, pink noise). Inner ear function was measured by means of the stapedius reflex audiometry. On the nitrogen-flushed side (pO2 approx. 0%), the stapedius reflex threshold dropped significantly more after high-frequency irradiation than on the O2-flushed side. Even without acoustic irradiation the stapediusreflex thr

The influence of situational cues and reasoning strategies on speechreading was studied in normal-hearing and minimally hearing-impaired adults. Everyday Speech Sentences (Davis & Silverman, 1968) produced by a female talker were videotaped without sound in the context of a visual background scene. A non-verbal acoustic signal was matched to each sentence and dubbed onto the recording. Thus, each test item consisted of an inaudible sentence presented with an optical and acoustic situational cue. The experimental task was structured so that subjects speechread sentences using deductive or induc

Remote masking (RM) consists of a rise of the threshold for low-pitched tones when the ear is exposed to a high-frequency noise band delivered with high intensity. This phenomenon has been attributed to mechanical non-linear distortion of the cochlear partition, as an effect of the envelope of a non-uniform signal. The authors studied RM in patients suffering from unilateral Menière's disorder, acoustic neuromata, other sensorineural lesions and presbyacusis. The behaviour of RM in the different experimental groups shows that the RM value is normal in acoustic neuromata; it is variable and not

The potential use of four new measures of susceptibility to acoustic trauma has been discussed. Each has the advantage, unlike TTS methodology, of not requiring a prior exposure stimulus. The use of an exposure sound has proven to be the major drawback to verification of Temkin's original hypothesis. A disadvantage inherent to the speech discrimination procedures involves the use of difficult-to-standardize speech materials and techniques. Consequently, one of the first three techniques, aural overload, threshold of octave masking, and brief-tone audiometry, is more desirable with aural overlo

Seven vertex-positive potentials--the brainstem auditory response--can be recorded from the human scalp within 10 milliseconds of an appropriate acoustic stimulus. The first of these potentials is generated in the acoustic nerve, the third in the pons, and the fifth in the midbrain. Measurement of the relative latencies and amplitudes of these potentials allowed detection of subclinical lesions in 37 (53 percent) of 70 patients with suspected multiple sclerosis who had no signs or symptoms of brainstem involvement by the disease. Abnormalities in the brainstem auditory response provided the fi
