3D printed PEDOT:PSS-based conducting and patternable eutectogel electrodes for machine learning on textiles.

The proliferation of medical wearables necessitates the development of novel electrodes for cutaneous electrophysiology. In this work, poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) polystyrene sulfonate (PEDOT:PSS) is combined with a deep eutectic solvent (DES) and polyethylene glycol diacrylate (PEGDA) to develop printable and biocompatible electrodes for long-term cutaneous electrophysiology recordings. The impact of printing parameters on the conducting properties, morphological characteristics, mechanical stability and biocompatibility of the material were investigated. The optimised eutectogel formula

Stretchable Tissue-Like Gold Nanowire Composites with Long-Term Stability for Neural Interfaces.

Soft and stretchable nanocomposites can match the mechanical properties of neural tissue, thereby minimizing foreign body reactions to provide optimal stimulation and recording specificity. Soft materials for neural interfaces should simultaneously fulfill a wide range of requirements, including low Young's modulus (<<1 MPa), stretchability (≥30%), high conductivity (>> 1000 S cm-1), biocompatibility, and chronic stability (>> 1 year). Current nanocomposites do not fulfill the above requirements, in particular not the combination of softness and high conductivity. Here, this challenge is addre

A Polymer for Application as a Matrix Phase in a Concept of In Situ Curable Bioresorbable Bioactive Load-Bearing Continuous Fiber Reinforced Composite Fracture Fixation Plates.

The use of bioresorbable fracture fixation plates made of aliphatic polyesters have good potential due to good biocompatibility, reduced risk of stress-shielding, and eliminated need for plate removal. However, polyesters are ductile, and their handling properties are limited. We suggested an alternative, PLAMA (PolyLActide functionalized with diMethAcrylate), for the use as the matrix phase for the novel concept of the in situ curable bioresorbable load-bearing composite plate to reduce the limitations of conventional polyesters. The purpose was to obtain a preliminary understanding of the ch

Sustained delivery of 17β-estradiol by human amniotic extracellular matrix (HAECM) scaffold integrated with PLGA microspheres for endometrium regeneration.

The endometrial injury usually results in intrauterine adhesions (IUAs). However, there is no effective treatment to promote the regeneration of the endometrium currently. The decellularized amnion membrane (AM) is a promising material in human tissue repair and regeneration due to its biocompatibility, biodegradability, as well as the preservation of abundant bioactive components. Here, an innovative drug-delivering system based on human amniotic extracellular matrix (HAECM) scaffolds were developed to facilitate endometrium regeneration. The 17β-estradiol (E2) loaded PLGA microspheres (E2-MS

Solar-driven carbon dioxide fixation using photosynthetic semiconductor bio-hybrids.

Solar-driven conversion of carbon dioxide to value-added carbon products is an ambitious objective of ongoing research efforts. However, high overpotential, low selectivity and poor CO2 mass transfer plague purely inorganic electrocatalysts. In this instance, we can consider a class of biological organisms that have evolved to achieve CO2 fixation. We can harness and combine the streamlined CO2 fixation pathways of these whole organisms with the exceptional ability of semiconducting nanomaterials to harvest solar energy. A novel nanomaterial-biological interface has been pioneered in which lig

Marine macromolecules cross-linked hydrogel scaffolds as physiochemically and biologically favorable entities for tissue engineering applications.

Marine biopolymer composite materials provide a technological platform for launching biomedical applications. Biomaterials demand good biocompatibility without the possibility of inflammation or foreign body reactions. In this study, we prepared two biocomposite hydrogels namely; HAC (hydroxyapatite, alginate & chitosan) and HACF (hydroxyapatite, alginate, chitosan & fucoidan) followed by calcium chloride cross linking. The prepared scaffolds were characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and scanning electron microscopy. Porosity measurement, swelling, biodegradation, hemolysis

4D printing of stimuli-responsive hydrogel actuators for intelligent biomedical soft robotics.

4D printing, or additive manufacturing of stimuli-responsive materials, is transforming soft robotics by enabling the fabrication of complex, adaptive systems that evolve in shape and function over time. Due to their exceptional responsiveness and biocompatibility, hydrogels are well suited for 4D printing because they mimic the physicochemical and biochemical properties of natural tissues while generating programmable mechanical work that bridges stimuli-responsive chemistry and biomimetic motion. This article reviews the state of the art in 4D-printed hydrogel actuators across emerging biome

Perovskite Quantum Dot-Based Photovoltaic Biointerface for Photostimulation of Neurons.

OBJECTIVE: A promising avenue for vision restoration against retinal degeneration is the use of semiconductor-based photovoltaic biointerfaces to substitute natural photoreceptors. Instead of silicon, perovskite has emerged as an exciting material for solar energy harvesting, and its nanocrystalline forms generally offer better stability than their bulk counterparts in addition to the distinct synthesis and fabrication steps. METHODS: Herein, we synthesize tetramethylammonium lead iodide (TMAPbI3) perovskite quantum dots (QDs) as a novel photoactive material for photovoltaic biointerfaces. Wh

Preparation of Composite Materials from Self-Assembled Chitin Nanofibers.

Although chitin is a representative abundant polysaccharide, it is mostly unutilized as a material source because of its poor solubility and processability. Certain specific properties, such as biodegradability, biocompatibility, and renewability, make nanofibrillation an efficient approach for providing chitin-based functional nanomaterials. The composition of nanochitins with other polymeric components has been efficiently conducted at the nanoscale to fabricate nanostructured composite materials. Disentanglement of chitin microfibrils in natural sources upon the top-down approach and regene

Synthesis, characterization and biological evaluation of octyltrimethylammonium tetrathiotungstate.

Octyltrimethylammonium tetrathiotungstate salt (ATT-C8) was synthesized and its ability to chelate copper was evaluated. The biological and toxic aspects were evaluated by in vitro and in vivo assays, using bovine aorta endothelial cells (BAEC) and zebrafish (Danio rerio) embryos. The obtained results suggest that ATT-C8 has better biocompatibility, showing a significantly lower lethal concentration 50 (LC50) value in comparison to ammonium tetrathiotungstate (ATT). Zebrafish embryos assay results indicate that both tetrathiotungstate salts at the studied concentrations increase the hatching t

Utilising silk fibroin membranes as scaffolds for the growth of tympanic membrane keratinocytes, and application to myringoplasty surgery.

BACKGROUND: Chronic tympanic membrane perforations can cause significant morbidity. The term myringoplasty describes the operation used to close such perforations. A variety of graft materials are available for use in myringoplasty, but all have limitations and few studies report post-operative hearing outcomes. Recently, the biomedical applications of silk fibroin protein have been studied. This material's biocompatibility, biodegradability and ability to act as a scaffold to support cell growth prompted an investigation of its interaction with human tympanic membrane keratinocytes. METHODS

Light and transmission electron microscopic studies following frontal sinus obliteration with ionomer cement in cats.

Osteoplastic frontal sinus surgery in combination with sinus obliteration can be performed for various indications, including chronic sinusitis, frontal sinus trauma and removal of osteomas. In an experimental study using cats, the mucous lining of the frontal sinus was removed, the nasofrontal duct sealed with semifluid ionomer cement and the cavity filled with Ionogran, a solid and porous bone substitute based on ionomer cement. Histological investigations up to 1 year after surgery showed increasing sinus obliteration by regenerating bone, starting from the sinus wall, and formation of conn

Ureter reconstruction using a biotube in a canine model: A pilot stud.

INTRODUCTION: Ureteral injuries can lead to renal dysfunction, and conventional treatments such as ureteral stents and autologous tissue grafts have limitations. This study aimed to evaluate the biocompatibility of a "biotube" created using in-body tissue architecture (iBTA) technology for ureteral reconstruction in a canine model. METHODS: Biotubes were implanted in dogs to replace a segment of the ureter. Ureteral stents were used to prevent obstruction. Autopsies were performed 2-3 months after implantation, and the implantation sites were examined histologically to assess tissue regenerat

Biocompatible Human Placental Extracellular Matrix Derived Hydrogels.

Solubilizing extracellular matrix (ECM) materials and transforming them into hydrogels has expanded their potential applications both in vitro and in vivo. In this study, hydrogels are prepared by decellularization of human placental tissue using detergent and enzymes and by the subsequent creation of a homogenized acellular placental tissue powder (P-ECM). A perfusion-based decellularization approach is employed using detergent and enzymes. The P-ECM with and without gamma irradiation is then utilized to prepare P-ECM hydrogels. Physical and biological evaluations are conducted to assess the

A mechanically robust and stable estradiol-loaded PHEMA-based hydrogel barrier for intrauterine adhesion treatment.

Estrogen combined with physical barrier therapy may be a prospective method to repair a damaged endometrium and prevent postsurgical re-adhesion in the treatment of intrauterine adhesions (IUAs), but there lacks a suitable scaffold with good biocompatibility, appropriate mechanical properties, and drug-releasing kinetics. Herein, a mechanically robust and stable barrier based on the poly(hydroxyethyl methacrylate) (PHEMA) hydrogel combined with estradiol-loaded mesoporous silica is designed. The network is formed by covalent bonds and noncovalent coordination bonds, which endow the hydrogel wi

Characteristics of Phospholipid-Immunosuppressant-Antioxidant Mixed Langmuir-Blodgett Films.

Hemocompatibility is one of the major criteria for the successful cardiovascular applicability of novel biomaterials. In this context, monolayers of certain biomolecules can be used to improve surface biocompatibility. To this end, biocoatings incorporating a phospholipid (1,2-dioleoyl-sn-glycero-3-phosphocholine, DOPC), an immunosuppressant (cyclosporine A, CsA), and an antioxidant material (lauryl gallate, LG) were fabricated by depositing Langmuir films onto gold or mica substrates using the Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) technique. These LB monolayers were thoroughly characterized by means of quar
