Interaction between microbes may influence antimicrobial susceptibility of one or more of the microbes, with studies pointing to increased resistance in these scenarios. Hattab et al. provided a novel perspective by identifying synergism between fluconazole and bacterial antagonism in the context of Candida albicans-Pseudomonas aeruginosa co-infection. Further research is required to translate these findings to the clinical setting, especially in the era of increasing antifungal resistance.

Infections with the Apicomplexa Toxoplasma gondii, Neospora caninum, and Sarcocystis spp. are common causes of reproductive disorders in sheep. However, few epidemiological studies regarding co-infections with these three protozoa are reported in sheep in Italy. For this reason, this study aims to evaluate possible co-infections with T. gondii, N. caninum, and Sarcocystis spp. in sheep slaughtered for human consumption. From April to July 2019, individual blood, brain, heart, and diaphragm samples were collected from 138 sheep after slaughtering. The presence of IgG anti-Toxoplasma in serum sa

Tuberculosis is still an important medical and social problem. In recent years, great strides have been made in the fight against M. tuberculosis, especially in the Russian Federation. However, the emergence of a new coronavirus infection (COVID-19) has led to the long-term isolation of the population on the one hand and to the relevance of using personal protective equipment on the other. Our knowledge regarding SARS-CoV-2-induced inflammation and tissue destruction is rapidly expanding, while our understanding of the pathology of human pulmonary tuberculosis gained through more the 100 years

Bacteroides fragilis (B. fragilis) is an uncommon cause of spinal abscess. We present a case of an 18-month-old child, with spinal dysraphism-Spina bifida occulta, who developed intra-spinal abscess infection with B. fragilis and Klebsiella pneumoniae. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of the brain and spine showed multiple abscesses extending through the presacral fistula into the spinal cord. Patient was surgically treated along with administration of antimicrobial agents (ceftriaxone and metronidazole), resulting in an excellent clinical outcome.

BACKGROUND: In India, there are several malaria-endemic regions where non-falciparum species coexist with Plasmodium falciparum. Traditionally, microscopy and rapid diagnostic tests are used for the diagnosis of malaria. Nevertheless, microscopy often misses the secondary malaria parasite in mixed-infection cases due to various constraints. Misdiagnosis/misinterpretation of Plasmodium species leads to improper treatment, as the treatment for P. falciparum and Plasmodium vivax species is different, as per the national vector-borne disease control program in India.
METHODS: Blood samples were c

Equid and asinine gammaherpesviruses (GHVs; genus Percavirus) are members of the Herpesviridae family. Though GHVs have been reported in horse populations, less studies are available on gammaherpesviral infections in donkeys. This study reports the co-infection with two GHVs in Pantesco breed donkeys, an endangered Italian donkey breed. Samples (n = 124) were collected on a breeding farm in Southern Italy from 40 donkeys, some of which were healthy or presented erosive tongue lesions and/or mild respiratory signs. Samples were analysed by using a set of nested PCRs targeting the DNA polymerase

COVID-19 is a global health crisis that continues to pose new challenges all around the world. Amidst the growing pandemic, a spike in the number of mucormycosis cases in India and Pakistan has been reported in COVID-19 patients and in those who have recovered from COVID-19. This increase in cases may be related to the overuse of steroids and zinc, the use of industrial oxygen, unsterilized medical equipment, frequent intubation, a weakened immune system, and pre-existing comorbidities such as diabetes. As a result, it is critical to take steps to handle the current increase in mucormycosis ca

We review the interaction between coronavirus disease (COVID-19) and coccidioidomycosis, a respiratory infection caused by inhalation of Coccidioides fungal spores in dust. We examine risk for co-infection among construction and agricultural workers, incarcerated persons, Black and Latino populations, and persons living in high dust areas. We further identify common risk factors for co-infection, including older age, diabetes, immunosuppression, racial or ethnic minority status, and smoking. Because these diseases cause similar symptoms, the COVID-19 pandemic might exacerbate delays in coccidi

A 69-year-old woman who had undergone renal transplantation and was receiving sulfamethoxazole/trimethoprim (ST) developed pulmonary nocardiosis. To our knowledge, this is the first report of the identification of Nocardia elegans using nanopore sequencing, supported by 16S rDNA capillary sequencing findings. Chest computed tomography performed after ST initiation revealed significant improvement of the pulmonary shadows compared to previous findings. We herein report the value of nanopore sequencing for rapid identification of rare pathogens, such as Nocardia elegans. Furthermore, our finding

It is widely recognized that many chronic infections of the human body have a polymicrobial etiology. These include diabetic foot ulcer infections, lung infections in cystic fibrosis patients, periodontitis, otitis, urinary tract infections and even a proportion of systemic infections. The treatment of mixed infections poses serious challenges in the clinic. First, polymicrobial communities of microorganisms often organize themselves as biofilms that are notoriously recalcitrant to antimicrobial therapy and clearance by the host immune system. Secondly, a plethora of interactions among communi

OBJECTIVES: The epidemiology of respiratory co-infection pairings is poorly understood. Here we assess the dynamics of respiratory viral co-infections in children and adults and determine predisposition for or against specific viral pairings.
METHODS: Over five respiratory seasons from 30 November 2013 through 6 June 2018, the mono-infection and co-infection prevalence of 13 viral pathogens was tabulated at The Cleveland Clinic. Employing a model to proportionally distribute viral pairs using individual virus co-infection rate with prevalence patterns of concurrent co-circulating viruses, we

Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) has now become a pandemic threat to the whole world. At the same time, influenza virus has been active, with influenza virus and SARS-CoV-2 sharing the same transmission routes. This article aims to alert clinicians of the presence of co-infection with these two viruses and to describe the effect of the measures taken to fight COVID-19 on influenza prevention and control.

OBJECTIVE: Treatment recommendations for hepatitis C now make no distinction between HIV/HCV-coinfected and HCV-monoinfected patients. The largest challenge remained lack of effective models to eliminate HCV in people living with HIV. We report the results of a microelimination program evaluating the possibility of eradicating HCV in an HIV-outpatient clinical unit within 12 months.
METHODS: This HCV-microelimination program began in February 2016 in an unit following approximately 1000 HIV-infected patients and combined screening and therapeutic components according to the French guideline.
