Allergies to sperm are very uncommon. A 23-year old woman with atopic dermatitis complained of three attacks of angioedema, urticaria, wheezing and weakness. When questioned about factors causing exercise-induced anaphylaxis, the patient reported having had sexual intercourse with the same partner one hour before each event. When using condoms, no symptoms occurred. Human seminal plasma allergy was confirmed by positive skin testing with the partner's sperm. Specific IgE-antibodies against human seminal plasma were not found. The patient received an emergency kit for anaphylaxis.

Job's syndrome is a rare immune disorder characterized by atopic dermatitis-like skin lesions, elevated serum IgE-levels, repeated occurrence of skin and respiratory tract infections, and skeletal abnormalities. We report on a 12-year-old boy with Job's syndrome from Gujarat State, India. He disclosed the characteristic face, eczematous skin reactions and skin and lung infections. Long-term chemoprophylaxis was realized with oral penicillins that dramatically improved the course of his disease. Other treatment options are discussed but not all meet the needs of developing countries.

Autoantibodies to human carbonic anhydrase II (CAII) were screened by ELISA in 109 sera from Asian Japanese patients with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), primary Sjögren's syndrome (Sjs), progressive systemic sclerosis (PSS) and dermatomyositis (DM). Anti-CAII antibodies were positive in 24.1% of SLE, 20.0% of primary Sjs, 16.7% of PSS and 25.0% of DM. On the other hand, sera from atopic dermatitis, bullous pemphigoid and psoriasis patients showed no activity for anti-CAII antibodies. CAII could be a common exonuclear autoantigen in subsets of rheumatic autoimmune diseases.

The levels of tryptase in the suction-blister fluid from patients with chronic urticaria, urticaria pigmentosa, cholinergic urticaria, urticarial dermographism, prurigo of unknown origin, eczema, psoriasis, atopic dermatitis, and from healthy controls were studied. The blister fluid from controls contained up to 15 micrograms/l of tryptase, whereas that from patients with active urticaria contained greater than 50 micrograms/l. This study demonstrates that patients with urticaria have mast cells that readily release tryptase in both the lesional and non-lesional areas of skin.

A total of 3389 consecutive patients attending the allergy clinic over a period of 5 years (2003-2007) were analysed by the same physician.
