Characterization of the chemical and viscoelastic properties of dentin treated with bromelain and bioactive glass-ceramic.

OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the effects of bromelain associated with Biosilicate (BrBio) on the chemical and viscoelastic properties of sound (SD) and caries-affected dentin (CAD), specifically on intertubular and peritubular regions. METHODS: Mid-coronal dentin discs were prepared, with half being demineralized using Streptococcus mutans to create CAD. Specimens (n = 5 per group) were treated with: Control (no treatment), 10% bromelain (Br), 10% Biosilicate (Bio), or their association (BrBio). Complex modulus (E*) and damping capacity (tan δ) were measured using nano-dynamic mechanical analysis

Shape-Based Morphoelasticity for Jellyfish Regeneration.

Many animals exhibit remarkable regenerative abilities, yet the mechanical processes that drive large-scale tissue reshaping remain challenging to characterize. Direct measurements of stress during such remodeling are difficult, while changes in morphology are readily observed. Motivated by wound healing in Clytia jellyfish, we introduce a theoretical framework that infers mechanical stress directly from shape evolution. We model the transformation as a morphoelastic process in quasi-two-dimensional geometry and exploit conformal mappings to obtain analytical expressions for the stress distrib

Stiffness enhanced reconfigurable soft hand for versatile stable grasps and in-hand manipulation.

Traditional soft robotic grippers often lack the structural rigidity required to maintain stable poses under external forces, as well as the fine control and precision offered by rigid grippers or conventional robotic hands. These limitations are particularly significant in tasks requiring dexterous manipulation, such as in-hand manipulating objects. This paper proposes a bio-inspired spine mechanism capable of self-adapting to the variable length of the finger, thus increasing strength and stiffness without compromising the intrinsic compliance of soft fingers. A passive inflatable soft finge

Tapioca starch-yeast protein 3D printing system for dysphagia: Different hydrocolloids regulate viscoelasticity and 3D printing accuracy through molecular interactions.

To develop easy-to-swallow foods for dysphagic individuals, this study prepared yeast protein (YP) and tapioca starch (TS) composite gel, and explored the effects of four hydrocolloids (HCs): flaxseed gum (FG), locust bean gum (LBG), xanthan gum (XG), and sodium alginate (SA) on their viscoelasticity, swallowing and 3D printing performances. All gels satisfied International Dysphagia Diet Standardization Initiative (IDDSI) Level 6 criteria. HCs raised 3D printing accuracy from 80.53% to 95.85%, correlating with increased viscoelasticity in the order: FG > XG > LBG > SA. Molecular analysis show…

Unified stability conditions for explicit finite-difference Biot-type poroelastodynamics: Non-dimensional design maps for time step selection in brain fluid transport.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Biot-type poroelastodynamics describes coupled solid deformation and pore-fluid transport, and is increasingly germane to biomedical simulation of tissue mechanics and interstitial fluid motion. Yet explicit finite-difference schemes, despite their economy in memory and execution time, remain hampered by the absence of a unified stability condition for systems in which propagative and dissipative processes coexist. This study derives a framework for explicit time-step selection in the u→-p form of Biot's equations. METHODS: A one-dimensional reduction of the linear B

Uncoupling the effects of pulmonary surfactant and tissue viscoelasticity using an image-based biophysical lung model.

Pulmonary biomechanical behavior is a critical determinant of the structure-function relationship in the lung under normal and pathological … nary surfactant dynamics and quantifies the contributions of surfactant and parenchymal tissue viscoelasticity to lung compliance. The effect of pulmonary surfactant was modeled as a surface energy function, and the surface behavior was coupled to the bulk behavior, assuming uniform spherical alveoli. The model was used to simulate respiration and investigat …

Dual Optical Elastography Techniques Reveal the Regulation of Corneal Stiffness by Collagen XIV.

Collagen XIV is a fibril-associated collagen with interrupted triple helices (FACIT) that helps regulate collagen fibril spacing, alignment, and extracellular matrix organization. Its role in corneal biomechanics remains incompletely understood. Here, we investigated murine wild-type (WT) and collagen XIV-deficient (Col14a1-/-) corneas using complementary optical elastography modalities: Brillouin microscopy and air-coupled ultrasound optical coherence elastography (ACUS-OCE). Brillouin microscopy generated high-resolution maps of Brillouin frequency shift in WT and Col14a1-/- corneas (N = 4 p

Endoscopic Diagnosis of Gastric Subepithelial Lesions < 20 mm: Current Strategies and Emerging Solutions.

Gastric subepithelial lesions (SELs) < 20 mm are frequently identified during routine endoscopy and account for approximately 90% of all SELs. Although most are benign, a substantial proportion represents gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GISTs), which carry malignant potential even at this small size. Histological confirmation is critical for appropriate risk assessment and treatment planning. However, the diagnostic yield of endoscopic ultrasound-guided tissue acquisition (EUS-TA) is limited for SELs < 20 mm due to technical challenges such as lesion mobility and short needle stroke. Mucosal

The role of noninvasive biomarkers for monitoring cell injury in advanced liver fibrosis.

INTRODUCTION: Accurate and reliable diagnosis and monitoring of hepatic fibrosis is increasingly important given the variable natural history in chronic liver disease (CLD) and expanding antifibrotic therapeutic options targeting reversibility of early-stage cirrhosis. This highlights the need to develop more refined and effective noninvasive techniques for the dynamic assessment of fibrogenesis and fibrolysis. AREAS COVERED: We conducted a literature review on PubMed, from 1 December 1970, to 1 November 2024, to evaluate and compare available blood-based and imaging-based noninvasive tools f

Ultrasonographic and elastographic evaluation of the canine cervix across oestrous cycle stages.

This study evaluated B-mode ultrasonography and ultrasound elastography (UEl) for detecting structural and consistency changes in the canine cervix across the oestrous cycle, as the use of ultrasonographic techniques for this purpose remains underexplored. The present study aims to assess cervical features via ultrasound, acknowledging the critical role of the cervix in the canine oestrus cycle. Thirty-five bitches were evaluated during pro-oestrus, pre-ovulatory oestrus, peri-ovulatory oestrus, dioestrus and anoestrus. Progesterone levels, clinical signs, vaginoscopy and cytology were used to

Fast abdominal magnetic resonance elastography with simultaneous encoding of three-dimensional displacements.

Three-dimensional (3D) magnetic resonance elastography (MRE) is more accurate than two-dimensional (2D) MRE; however, it requires long-term acquisition. This study aimed to reduce the acquisition time of abdominal 3D MRE using a new sample interval modulation (short-SLIM) approach that can acquire all three motions faster while reducing the prolongation of echo time and flow compensation. To this end, two types of phantom studies and an in vivo test of the liver in three healthy volunteers were performed to compare the performances of conventional spin-echo echo-planar (SE-EPI) MRE, convention

Compound Acoustic Radiation Force Impulse Imaging of Bovine Eye by Using Phase-Inverted Ultrasound Transducer.

In general, it is difficult to visualize internal ocular structure and detect a lesion such as a cataract or glaucoma using the current ultrasound brightness-mode (B-mode) imaging. This is because the internal structure of the eye is rich in moisture, resulting in a lack of contrast between tissues in the B-mode image, and the penetration depth is low due to the attenuation of the ultrasound wave. In this study, the entire internal ocular structure of a bovine eye was visualized in an ex vivo environment using the compound acoustic radiation force impulse (CARFI) imaging scheme based on the ph

Super-Strong, Super-Stiff, and Super-Tough Fluorescent Alginate Fibers with Outstanding Tolerance to Extreme Conditions.

The combination of multiple physical properties is of great importance for widening the application scenarios of biomaterials. It remains a great challenge to fabricate biomolecules-based fibers gaining both mechanical strength and toughness which are comparable to natural spider dragline silks. Here, by mimicking the structure of dragline silks, a high-performance fluorescent fiber Alg-TPEA-PEG is designed by non-covalently cross-linking the polysaccharide chains of alginate with AIEgen-based surfactant molecules as the flexible contact points. The non-covalent cross-linking network provides

Feasibility of assessing non-invasive intracranial compliance using FSI simulation-based and MR elastography-based brain stiffness.

Intracranial compliance (ICC) refers to the change in intracranial volume per unit change in intracranial pressure (ICP). Magnetic resonance elastography (MRE) quantifies brain stiffness by measuring the shear modulus. Our objective is to investigate the relationship between ICC and brain stiffness through fluid-structure interaction (FSI) simulation, and to explore the feasibility of using MRE to assess ICC based on brain stiffness. This is invaluable due to the clinical importance of ICC, as well as the fast and non-invasive nature of the MRE procedure. We employed FSI simulation in hydrocep
