CONCLUSION: This preliminary study demonstrates the development of hearing ability and shows that there is a significant improvement in some cognitive parameters related to selective visual/spatial attention and to fluid or multisensory reasoning, in children fitted with auditory brainstem implantation (ABI). OBJECTIVE: This study presents the long-term outcome of 321 epicardial leads in 138 patients.
METHODS AND RESULTS: All leads were Medtronic CapsureEpi model 4965 steroid eluting leads. The 1-, 3-, and 5-year patient survival was 91%, 83% and 77%, respectively.Twenty-seven patients died. Computational modeling and human studies suggest that transcranial alternating current stimulation (tACS) modulates alpha oscillations by entrainment. Understanding the contribution of transmitter systems in behavioural pharmacology has a long tradition. Multiple techniques such as transmitter-specific lesions, and also localized administration of pharmacological toxins including agonists and antagonists of selected receptors have been applied. More recently, modern genetic tools have permitted cell-type selective interferences, for example by expression of light-sensitive channels followed by optogenetic stimulation in behaviourally meaningful settings or by engineered channels termed DREADDS that respond to peripherally administered drugs.

We report the case of the extraction of 18 year-old leads in a patient with a DDD pacemaker, and chronic obstruction of the left subclavian and innominate veins coexisting with extensive stenoses in the upper caval vein. After removal of pacing leads, angiographic guidewires were introduced via the Byrd dilatators and new pacing leads introduced with the use of long sheaths originally dedicated for transvenous left ventricular leads implantation. With this case, we discuss the problems arising during reimplantation of pacing leads in patients with chronic venous occlusion.

INTRODUCTION: Chronic low back pain in patients with postlaminectomy syndrome (PLS) is challenging to treat, especially for patients who have undergone multilevel surgical procedures. Despite conservative therapy and available interventional pain procedures including spinal cord stimulation (SCS) and intrathecal therapies, patients may continue with intractable low back pain. This 28-year-old Chinese man was referred for deep brain stimulation (DBS) evaluation for an 8-year history of refractory obsessive-compulsive disorder. After the patient had signed an informed consent, the authors implanted DBS leads. Hypomania with hypersexuality was noted on stimulation at Contact 2 and became aggravated with a higher voltage (> or = 3 V) during chronic bilateral DBS. After the voltage was decreased to 1 V, the patient's hypomanic symptoms subsided and his libido returned to baseline.
