Involvement of the cannabinoid receptors of the basolateral amygdala in the orexin A-mediated modulation of the stress-induced analgesia.

The amygdala receives extensive projections from the dorsomedial and ventromedial hypothalamus (DMH and VMH), which modulate innate fear responses. The basolateral amygdala (BLA) receives GABAergic inputs from the DMH/VMH and orexinergic inputs from the lateral hypothalamus. Therefore, this study investigated the potential interaction between the orexinergic and cannabinoid systems within the BLA during stress-induced analgesia. First, the DMH/VMH and BLA were stereotaxically cannulated. Innate fear, as a defensive response, was induced by intra-DMH/VMH injection of bicuculline. Orexin-A (OrxA…

Effects of two psychotherapies for obsessive-compulsive disorder on brain activity during emotional processing.

BACKGROUND: To clarify the working mechanisms of psychotherapy for obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), we studied the neural effects of two psychotherapies: cognitive behavioral therapy with exposure and response prevention (CBT-ERP) and inference-based cognitive behavioral therapy (I-CBT). METHODS: Fifty-five individuals with OCD completed an emotional processing task during fMRI before and after 20 weekly psychotherapy sessions, using general fear and OCD-related visual stimuli. We used Bayesian region-of-interest analyses to assess changes in brain activation in prefrontal, limbic, sensor…

The tokophobia severity scale: a psychometric multicountry study with childbearing-age women.

PURPOSE: Tokophobia refers to a clinically significant fear of childbirth that affects women across the reproductive lifespan. Given its prevalence and association with adverse mental health, obstetric, and reproductive decision-making outcomes, valid and reliable measures are essential to identify women at risk of tokophobia. METHODS: Tokophobia Severity Scale (TSS) psychometric properties were analyzed in nulliparous non-pregnant, pregnant, and women in the postpartum using data from cross-sectional and longitudinal studies conducted in four countries: Australia, Lithuania, Poland, and Port…

Initial validation of the 12-item Tampa Scale of Kinesiophobia in a retrospective sample of adults with chronic headache.

INTRODUCTION: An area of emerging interest in chronic pain populations concerns fear of pain and associated fear of movement (kinesiophobia)-a cognitive appraisal pattern that is well-validated in non-headache chronic pain. However, there is limited research on whether this construct can be measured in a similar manner in headache populations. METHODS: The current project details a confirmatory factor analysis of the 12-Item Tampa Scale of Kinesiophobia (TSK-12) using a clinical data set from 210 adults with diverse headache diagnoses presenting for care at a multidisciplinary pain clinic. On…

Sex-dependent effects of angiotensin II type 1 receptor blocker on molecular and behavioral changes induced by single prolonged stress.

Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a neuropsychiatric disorder that not only entails alterations in fear behavior and anxiety but also includes neuroendocrine dysfunctions involving the hypothalamic pituitary adrenal (HPA) axis and the renin-angiotensin system. Recent preclinical studies demonstrate that activation of the angiotensin type 1 receptor (AT1R) in the paraventricular region of the hypothalamus (PVR) promotes anxiety-like behaviors and enables microglia proliferation. An increase in microglia and anxiety-like behavior also occurs in the PTSD animal model single-prolonged stres…

Spatiotemporal strategies adopted to walk at fast speed in high- and low-functioning individuals post-stroke: a cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Walking at fast speed is a gait training strategy post-stroke. It is unknown how faster-than-preferred pace impacts spatiotemporal gait characteristics in survivors with different functional abilities. OBJECTIVE: To test the hypothesis that compared to high-functioning individuals, low-functioning individuals will be limited in modifying spatiotemporal gait parameters for walking at faster-than-preferred speed, and these limitations are associated with fear of falling. METHODS: Forty-two adults, 17.6 ± 14.6 months post-stroke, traversed an instrumented walkway at preferred and fa…
