The proteins in culture filtrate derived from Bacillus Calmette-Guérin (BCG) were examined for protection against infection by Mycobacterium leprae. Immunization with the major secreted proteins, antigen 85 complex (Ag 85) A, B and C, induced effective protective immunity against multiplication of M. leprae in the foot pads of mice. To test the hypothesis that renal sensitivity to atrial natriuretic peptide (ANP) is impaired in Gordon's syndrome (hypertension and hyperkalaemia with normal glomerular filtration rate) we infused alpha-hANP into two patients with this syndrome (a sister and a brother, 19 and 18 years of age). Amyloid fibrils from an individual with heredofamilial amyloidosis were found to be composed of plasma prealbumin. To study this protein a three step procedure to isolate prealbumin from plasma was developed. A gas-liquid chromatographic system which allows most of the metabolites of the patulin pathway to be separated and quantitated has been developed. The metabolites are mostly phenols, and after conversion to their trimethylsilyl derivatives they are efficiently separated on a 3.18 mm O.D. stainless-stell column of 10% QF-1 on Gas-Chrom Q using a temperature programme.
