Melanocytic naevi are benign skin tumours that originate in the epidermis. The pathogenesis of naevi and cutaneous malignant melanoma has been linked to sun exposure. Synthetic retinoids were first evaluated 15 years ago for systemic treatment of psoriasis in the Federal Republic of Germany. A 67-year-old female presented with subacute transient visual disturbances in her left eye and subacute watershed infarctions in the left MCA territory due to a long segment chronic internal carotid artery (ICA) near-occlusion following ICA stenting (CAS). Angioplasty was performed using two newly designed stents (CARESTO® heal, Acandis, Pforzheim, Germany) from the ICA origin into the cavernous segment without complications, with a favorable clinical outcome.

Cross-sectional survey data from 226 heterosexual and 201 gay men in the UK and Germany, analysed using moderation analyses, showed a positive relationship between identity resilience -self-efficacy and engaging in condomless sex and drug use in sexualised settings in gay men only. It is proposed that higher self-efficacy may lead to increased feelings of invincibility in gay men, which in turn is associated with sexual risk-taking.

Chronic rhinosinusitis with (CRwNP) or without (CRsNP) nasal polyps can have a great impact on quality of life. Typical symptoms include nasal obstruction, olfactory dysfunction, nasal discharge, and facial pain or pressure. Diagnostic gold standard is nasal endoscopy followed by CT scan of the paranasal sinuses. Besides first-line treatment with topical or systemically applied glucocorticoids, nasal rinsing, and surgical therapy, monoclonal antibodies have been approved in Germany since 2019.

Escherichia coli sequence type 131 (ST131) is the most frequent antimicrobial-resistant lineage of E. coli, propagating extended-spectrum β-lactamases (ESBL) worldwide. Recently, an alarming rate of increase in isolates of the sublineage C1/H30R-blaCTX-M-27 of ST131 in geographically distant countries was reported. BACKGROUND: Methotrexate (MTX), alongside fumaric acid esters, is the most commonly used drug in the systemic therapy of psoriasis in Germany. It is sometimes used in combination with topical therapy and/or phototherapy due to synergistic effects.
CASE REPORT: Here we describe a case of phototoxic dermatitis during treatment with MTX. Other cutaneous side effects of MTX include so-called UV recall, radiation recall, and skin tumor formation.

In September and October 2010, 13 primary measles cases were identified among unvaccinated persons aged between 9 and 32 years (median: 16.5) in 11 districts in Germany. All cases had attended meetings in Taizé, France. This outbreak illustrates the risk of long distance spread of infectious diseases associated with international mass gatherings, and underlines the importance of closing immunisation gaps against measles by vaccinating non-immune adolescents and young adults.

Until recently, living kidney donations between donors and recipients of different blood groups were contraindicated. Since 2004, blood group incompatible kidney transplantations have been performed in Germany. Through the use of the anti-CD20 antibody rituximab and a highly selective immunoadsorption treatment, the recipient's antibodies against the foreign blood group are removed before the transplantation to minimize the risk of an antibody-mediated acute rejection reaction after the transplantation.

Five patients with chronic hepatitis C were treated for one year with the herbal immunomodulatory agent Iscador (Weleda, Schwäbisch Gmünd Germany). Two patients showed 6-20 fold decreases in viral load and normalisation of liver inflammation. The treatment was well tolerated; no serious side effects were observed. The quality of life improved on average. Iscador may have potential as a non toxic therapy for chronic hepatitis C treatment.

Among 242 institutionalized mentally retarded males in Northern Germany screened for fra(X)(q), 15 (6.2%) with severe mental retardation expressing fra(X)(q) were detected. One patient displayed Klinefelter's syndrome in addition. All fra(X)(q) males showed the typical facial signs, but three of the adults did not express macroorchidism. A preliminary estimation of an overall frequency of 1:2000 males for the fra(X)(q) condition is suggested.

In Germany there are approximately 18,500 major amputations of the lower extremity each year, primarily transtibial or transfemoral. For successful rehabilitation, knowledge about the desired optimal stump condition and specific amputation techniques are essential. Biomechanical considerations regarding the amputation stump play a crucial role in the selection of the surgical technique as do the reasons for the amputation. Techniques such as myodesis, myoplasty or Gottschalk plastic surgery help to maintain muscle tension and optimize prosthesis control.
