BACKGROUND: Endotherapy of bleeding gastric varices is problematic. The aim of this descriptive study in an animal model was to compare 2-octyl-cyanoacrylate (Dermabond), a Food and Drug Administration-approved agent for superficial wound closure, to N-butyl-2-cyanoacrylate (Histoacryl), an agent available outside of the United States for the endoscopic treatment of bleeding gastric varices.

We describe an unusual case of actinomycosis that appeared as a nasal mass. The diagnosis was established when Actinomyces viscosus was isolated from pus obtained from the right maxillary antrum by intranasal antrostomy. The patient was treated with intravenous crystalline penicillin and made an uneventful recovery within 10 days.

This paper describes and tests the LL-EPI method for obtaining quantitative T1 estimates in a few seconds thereby allowing dynamic T1 studies. Three children with osteogenesis imperfecta, severe osteopenia, and repeated fractures were treated with cyclic infusions of aminohydroxypropylidene bisphosphonate (pamidronate) for a period ranging from 22 to 29 months. A clear clinical response was shown, with a striking reduction of new fracture episodes and a marked improvement in the quality of the patients' lives. Bone mineral density increased significantly in two patients, and linear growth continued along the percentile at the start of treatment.
