Chikungunya in Indonesia: Epidemiology and diagnostic challenges.

BACKGROUND: Chikungunya virus (CHIKV) is often overlooked as an etiology of fever in tropical and sub-tropical regions. Lack of diagnostic testing capacity in these areas combined with co-circulation of clinically similar pathogens such as dengue virus (DENV), hinders CHIKV diagnosis. To better address CHIKV in Indonesia, an improved understanding of epidemiology, clinical presentation, and diagnostic approaches is needed. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: Acutely hospitalized febrile patients ≥1-year-old were enrolled in a multi-site observational cohort study conducted in Indonesia from 2013

Socioeconomic and behavioural determinants of malaria among the migrants in gold mining, rubber and oil palm plantation areas in Myanmar.

BACKGROUND: Malaria is a major public health problem in Myanmar. Migrant populations are at high risk of contracting malaria and its control is more difficult than for settled population. Studies on malaria and migration are rare in Myanmar. This study was undertaken with the main objective of identifying socioeconomic and behavioural determinants of malaria among the migrant workers involved in gold mining, rubber and oil palm plantations. METHODS: A cross-sectional analytic study was conducted using pretested interview-administered questionnaires among internal migrants (n = 406) in the mal

Perceptions, knowledge, attitudes and practices for the prevention and control of lymphatic filariasis in Conakry, Republic of Guinea.

Little is known about the perceptions, attitudes and practices of lymphatic filariasis in Conakry, Republic of Guinea. Yet, such knowledge is important for an optimal design and implementation of setting-specific prevention and control measures. We conducted a cross-sectional study using a mixed methods approach. Qualitative data related to people's general experience with lymphatic filariasis, their perception of the causes of the disease, the onset of elephantiasis, care-seeking behaviour and the socioeconomic impact of lymphatic filariasis were collected through in-depth interviews with 85

A Possible Link Between Pyriproxyfen and Microcephaly.

The Zika virus has been the primary suspect in the large increase in incidence of microcephaly in 2015-6 in Brazil. While evidence for Zika being the cause of some of the cases is strong, its role as the primary cause of the large number of cases in Brazil has not been confirmed. Recently, the disparity between the incidences in different geographic locations has led to questions about the virus's role. Here we consider the alternative possibility that the use of the insecticide pyriproxyfen for control of mosquito populations in Brazilian drinking water is the primary cause. Pyriproxifen is a

Dirofilaria immitis exposure status in client-owned cats with or without lower airway/lung-associated signs: case-control study in a canine heartworm-endemic area.

Objectives Heartworm-associated respiratory disease (HARD) is a recently recognised pathological manifestation in cats caused by Dirofilaria immitis exposure. This study aimed to estimate the percentage of cats at risk of developing HARD in a heartworm-endemic area (Taipei, Taiwan), and to test the correlation of heartworm exposure and the presence of lower airway/lung clinical signs (LA/L signs). Methods This was a prospective case-control study. The study design called for the enrolment of at least 80 cats with LA/L signs and at least 80 cats without such clinical signs in a 1 year period. The Critical Role of Early Dengue Surveillance and Limitations of Clinical Reporting - Implications for Non-Endemic Countries.

The increasing dengue burden and epidemic severity worldwide have highlighted the need to improve surveillance. In non-endemic areas such as Taiwan, where outbreaks start mostly with imported cases from Southeast Asia, a closer examination of surveillance dynamics to detect cases early is necessary. To evaluate problems with dengue surveillance and investigate the involvement of different factors at various epidemic stages, we investigated 632 laboratory-confirmed indigenous dengue cases in Kaohsiung City, Taiwan during 2009-2010. The estimated sensitivity of clinical surveillance was 82.4% (5

Safety and efficacy of single-dose primaquine to interrupt Plasmodium falciparum malaria transmission in children compared with adults: a systematic review and individual patient data meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Adding a single dose of primaquine to artemisinin-based combination therapy (ACT) for the treatment of falciparum malaria can reduce the transmission of Plasmodium falciparum and could limit the spread of artemisinin partial resistance, including in Africa, where the disease burden is greatest. We aimed to compare the safety and efficacy of single-dose primaquine plus ACT between young children (aged <5 years) and older children (aged 5 years to <15 years) and adults (aged ≥15 years), and between low and moderate-to-high transmission areas. METHODS: For this systematic review and

Optimisation of laboratory-rearing parameters for Anopheles funestus larvae and adults.

Anopheles funestus is one of the major malaria vectors in Africa. As with the other main vectors, insecticide resistance in this species threatens existing vector control strategies. Unfortunately, scientific investigations, which could improve understanding of this vector species or lead to the development of new control strategies, are currently limited by difficulties in laboratory rearing of the species. In an attempt to optimise laboratory-rearing conditions for An. funestus, the effect of an artificial blood-feeding system for adults, different larval diet doses, and a range of other rea

Crosstalk Between Dermal Fibroblasts and Dendritic Cells During Dengue Virus Infection.

Dengue virus infection (DENV-2) is transmitted by infected mosquitoes via the skin, where many dermal and epidermal cells are potentially susceptible to infection. Most of the cells in an area of infection will establish an antiviral microenvironment to control viral replication. Although cumulative studies report permissive DENV-2 infection in dendritic cells, keratinocytes, and fibroblasts, among other cells also infected, little information is available regarding cell-to-cell crosstalk and the effect of this on the outcome of the infection. Therefore, our study focused on understanding the

Efficacy of pirimiphos-methyl (50% EC), as a larvicide for the control of Culex quinquefasciatus.

BACKGROUND & OBJECTIVE: Pirimiphos-methyl, an organophosphorus insecticide is known to overcome resistance mechanisms of mosquitoes to other organophosphates. Information on the duration of efficacy of pirimiphos-methyl (50% emulsifiable concentrate) for the control of immatures of Culex quinquefasciatus, the vector of bancroftian filariasis, is scanty and hence site specific field trials are necessary to determine the field dosage. Pirimiphos-methyl (50% EC) was tested for its efficacy in cesspits and drains against the immatures of Cx. quinquefasciatus at Puducherry, an endemic area for fila

CD4 T Cells, CD8 T Cells, and Monocytes Coordinate To Prevent Rift Valley Fever Virus Encephalitis.

Rift Valley fever virus (RVFV) is an arbovirus that causes disease in livestock and humans in Africa and the Middle East. While human disease is typically mild and self-limiting, some individuals develop severe manifestations, such as hepatitis, hemorrhagic fever, or encephalitis. Encephalitis occurs 2 to 3 weeks after acute illness; therefore, we hypothesized that it was a result of an inadequate adaptive immunity. To test this hypothesis in vivo, we used an attenuated virus (DelNSsRVFV) that does not typically cause disease in mice. We first characterized the normal immune response to infect

High frequency of Voltage-gated sodium channel (VGSC) gene mutations in Aedes albopictus (Diptera: Culicidae) suggest rapid insecticide resistance evolution in Shanghai, China.

BACKGROUND: Dengue fever is an infectious disease that is imported into Shanghai, China and requires prevention and control measures. Controlling the vector Aedes albopictus through insecticide use is a key approach to dengue control. However, the rapid evolution of insecticide resistance in Ae. albopictus has raised concerns about the failure of dengue control efforts. Knockdown resistance (kdr) caused by point mutations in the voltage-gated sodium channel (VGSC) gene is a primary mechanism of pyrethroid resistance. In this study, we investigated the kdr mutations of Ae. albopictus in Shangha

[Effect of low-dose primaquine treatment on Plasmodium vivax recurrence and transmission-blocking activity in southwest Ethiopia: a longitudinal cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Existing malaria control strategies for Plasmodium vivax are challenging due to its dormant and relapsing liver stages, as well as the early onset of gametocytogenesis. Primaquine (PQ) effectively eliminates dormant stages and can kill gametocytes; however, it necessitates repeated dosing. In this study, the effectiveness of chloroquine (CQ) plus low-dose of PQ on recurrence and its transmission-blocking activity was evaluated. METHODS: Between September 2019 and July 2022, a prospective cohort study was conducted in the Jimma-Arjo and Dabo-Hanna districts of the Oromia region in

Explanatory models and animal health-seeking behavior for East Coast fever in rural Kenya: an ethnographic study.

INTRODUCTION: Explanatory models of disease focus on individuals' and groups' understandings of diseases, revealing a disconnect between livestock keepers and animal health providers. Animal health providers rely on models grounded in their veterinary training and experience. At the same time, livestock keepers may construct models based on traditional knowledge and their lived experience with East Coast fever in their cattle herds. To better understand East Coast fever and develop more efficient management strategies, this ethnographic study used the explanatory models' framework to provide a
