PURPOSE: To estimate the prevalence of adrenal expansive lesions in patients with bronchial carcinoma, and assess the relationships among adrenal masses, TNM classification, and histology of the bronchial carcinoma, and to reveal other signs of inoperability in these patients.

DNA ploidy has been studied in 61 primary fallopian tube carcinomas using image-cytometry. The investigation also included survival analysis, and ploidy classification according to AUER was performed in order to evaluate its prognostic impact for fallopian tube carcinoma. Fifty-eight patients presenting with lymph node metastases of the head and neck were treated at the Bremen ENT Clinic from 1970 to 1988. In none of the patients could a primary tumor be detected despite extensive diagnostic procedures. The 5-year survival rate was 26.3%. Surgical specimens from 40 patients with carcinoma of the papilla of Vater were submitted to histopathological analysis of tumor. We studied histophatological parameters and DNA content in 27 supraglottic and 37 glottic T-1 squamous cell carcinoma of the larynx. The DNA content was determined by the Hedley method in paraffin-embedded sections of formalin-fixed blocks in an EPICS Profile flow cytometer. We studied 14 histopathological parameters and only 3 were statistically different in both groups of tumors: Differentiation, infiltrative degree and mitoses. There weren't statistical differences in DNA content (DNA index and proliferation index).

A patient with stage D prostatic cancer but in reasonably good general health was discovered to have adrenal failure and tumor destruction of the adrenal glands. Because prostatic cancer is common and compatible with prolonged survival, we surveyed other patients with stage D prostatic cancer. On initial screening with the cosyntropin test, we found that 5 of 14 patients failed to respond with an increase in serum cortisol of 10 micrograms/dL, suggesting an adrenal failure incidence of 36%. Retesting, however, indicated that probably all of these were false-positive results.

The purpose of this study was to evaluate local recurrence following vertical partial laryngectomies in 416 patients with either T1N0M0 or T2N0M0 glottic carcinoma. Local failure was reported according to the T stage, the precise tumor location within each stage, the true vocal cord mobility, and the surgical procedure performed. Fifteen women with genital malignant melanoma were studied. Their ages ranged from 19 to 66 years (mean 49.1 years); 12 were white, and three were black. The sites of involvement were the mons pubis (one patient), perineal body (one), labium majus (three), labium minus (three), and vagina (seven). In order to study the spontaneous regression of the colon cancers of WF Osaka strain rats, laparotomies were carried on 701 rats in sequence at the age of four months. Among them, 260 cases were found having colon cancers at the laparotomy. 107 out of them showed spontaneous regression of the colon cancer in the ascending colon. Early rectal carcinoma of the lower rectum without involvement of the muscularis propria should be considered for local treatment. Factors indicating a poor prognosis can be identified histologically by "total biopsy". Definitive management depends on the postoperative tumor stage, type, histologic grading, lymphatic invasion and incomplete surgical excision. Survival rates after limited procedures or radical surgery do not differ, provided that clinical and histologic criteria are observed.

Forty-one patients undergoing surgery for recurrent or residual tumour following radical radiotherapy for T3N0M0 glottic carcinoma had their larynges evaluated pathologically by whole organ laryngeal sectioning. All patients had been staged initially as T3N0M0 glottic carcinoma and treated according to a protocol of radical radiotherapy (50-55 Gy in 4-5 weeks) with surgery reserved for radiation failure. Carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) was assayed by radio immunoassay in serum of 87 patients with breast cancer and 85 patients with benign breast tumors from 1983 to 1986. The authors present the combined method of sonographic assessment of rectal carcinomas in respect of spread of tumour as well as metastasising, using linear rectal sounds (Aloka-Hellige) and rotating rectal sounds (Brüel-Kjear).
