Over the period 1981 to 1989, the number of admissions to Dutch general hospitals for barbiturate poisoning has dropped sharply and steadily, due to a more restrictive policy in prescribing regarding these sedatives. This trend is also present concerning poisoning with sedatives and hypnotics in general (ICD-code 967), but not concerning those with benzodiazepines (ICD-code 969.4). The female-male ratio was nearly 2:1. This difference is possibly due to the fact that females take more medication than males.

Little is known about transient synovitis of the hip in the community. Using data from the Dutch national survey of morbidity and interventions in general practice, a study was undertaken to look at the incidence and management of transient synovitis of the hip in children under 15 years of age. Transient synovitis of the hip was diagnosed in 19 children, 17 of whom were new cases. The mean age of the children was six years six months with a sex ratio of 2.8:1.0 boys to girls. Keratosis follicularis spinulosa decalvans (KFSD) is a rare X-chromosomal disorder. It consists of follicular hyperkeratosis of the skin, scarring alopecia of the scalp, absence of the eyebrows, and corneal degeneration. There is photophobia in childhood, but the symptoms tend to diminish after puberty, and prognosis for vision is good. Some heterozygotes do show clinical symptoms. In order to gain an impression of the documentation of the testes position in the first few days after delivery an inquiry was held among all clinical paediatricians. The response was 62%. In 30 fully investigated family pedigrees in which there were at least two generations of people suffering from osteogenesis imperfecta type I (McKusick no. 16620), the data on 144 random offspring could be used for segregation analysis. An inquiry was held among a randomly selected group of 100 school doctors in order to gain an impression of the blood pressure measuring and of the criteria for the diagnosis of hypertension in the practice of child health care. Four patients with an absence status induced by drugs, are described. In three patients the use of neuroleptics was the probable cause, in the other indomethacin could be incriminated. As yet an absence status after treatment with these medicaments has not been described. Clinically, the diagnosis was not unequivocal. The EEG gave clear results, rapidly indicating the cause of the patient's clinical condition.

In order to assess the potential role of intravenous drug users (IVDUs) in Amsterdam in the heterosexual transmission of HIV, we studied the sexual behaviour of 243 male and female IVDUs with regard to their private ('steady' and 'casual') and commercial partners. In this replication study pain assessment and patient perception by nurses was studied in relation to patient characteristics and nurse characteristics. Nurses were randomly assigned to one of 24 descriptions of a hypothetical patient of constant age and unspecified sex. The health records of 1816 11-year-old Dutch schoolboys were examined to assess the importance of these records for boys with an apparently non-scrotal testicle. Since 1982 the St. Radboud hospital, Nijmegen, has a contiguity plan for peace-time disasters which describes the way to deal with great numbers of patients of traffic-, environmental- or industrial-calamities. The function of the commander, the separate hospital services, the medical and nursing triage team and administrative services are clearly delineated. Also is indicated how to organise communication between hospital, municipality, police and fire-brigade.
