Krox20 is down-regulated following triazole in vitro embryonic exposure: a polycompetitor-based assay.

This study was conducted in order to analyse gene-expression alterations in rat embryos following exposure to triazoles, using an easy-handling approach. Triazole derivatives have been shown to alter the morphology of cranio-facial structures and to induce abnormalities in hindbrain patterning and neural crest cell migration. Specification of hindbrain segments is regulated by retinoic acid and the hox code. Krox20 was chosen as molecular marker for its specific distribution in the anterior neural tube. In fact, this zinc-finger protein is expressed in rhombomere 3 and 5. Mis-regulation of Kro

Brain magnetic resonance spectroscopy in Tourette's disorder.

OBJECTIVE: Although abnormalities of neural circuits involving the cortex, striatum, and thalamus are hypothesized to underlie Tourette's disorder, the neuronal abnormalities within components of these circuits are unknown. The purpose of this study was to examine the cellular neurochemistry within these circuits in Tourette's disorder using proton magnetic resonance spectroscopy, a method that has not previously been used in neurobiological investigations of the disorder. METHOD: Proton magnetic resonance spectroscopic imaging examinations were conducted in 25 males with Tourette's disorder

Predicting auditory tone-in-noise detection performance: the effects of neural variability.

Collecting and analyzing psychophysical data is a fundamental mechanism for the study of auditory processing. However, because this approach relies on human listening experiments, it can be costly in terms of time and money spent gathering the data. The development of a theoretical, model-based procedure capable of accurately predicting psychophysical behavior could alleviate these issues by enabling researchers to rapidly evaluate hypotheses prior to conducting experiments. This approach may also provide additional insight into auditory processing by establishing a link between psychophysical

Phonemic manipulation in Japanese: an fMRI study.

Phonological awareness is the ability to manipulate abstract phonological representations of language and is crucial to the process of learning to read. The neural substrates underlying this appear to be modality-independent at least in alphabetic languages. Japanese language has different orthographic "kana" system, in which each "kana" character strictly corresponds to a syllable. To investigate the neural substrates underlying phonological manipulation of the Japanese language, functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) was used. Neuroimaging data were obtained from adult healthy voluntee

[Features of the spontaneous unit activity in the human thalamic parafascicular (CM-Pf) complex and its modification in functional cerebral changes].

New data on neural organization of the human thalamic parafascicular (CM-Pf) complex were revealed with microelectrode technique during 11 stereotaxic operations in alert diskinetic patients suffering from the tonic forms of spasmodic torticollis. The data were obtained as follows: the functional heterogeneity in cellular organization of the human CM-Pf thalamic nuclei and the existence of three (A, B and C) different types of neurons in these thalamic nuclei: with the irregular discharges (A-type, 18%); with short (10-20 ms) bursts characterised by unstable rhythmic 2-5 Hz pattern and by the

Intrathecal fentanyl abolishes the exaggerated blood pressure response to cycling in hypertensive men.

The increase in blood pressure observed during physical activities is exaggerated in patients with hypertension, exposing them to a higher cardiovascular risk. Neural signals from the skeletal muscles appear to be overactive, resulting in this abnormal response in hypertensive patients. In the present study, we tested whether the attenuation of these neural signals in hypertensive patients could normalize their abnormal increase in blood pressure during physical activity. Attenuation of the neural signals from the leg muscles with intrathecal fentanyl injection reduced the blood pressure of hy

Endocrine Glands and Hearing: Auditory Manifestations of Various Endocrine and Metabolic Conditions.

The aetiology of hearing loss in humans is multifactorial. Besides genetic, environmental and infectious causes, several endocrine and metabolic abnormalities are associated with varying degrees of hearing impairment. The pattern of hearing loss may be conductive, sensori-neural or mixed. The neurophysiology of hearing as well as the anatomical structure of the auditory system may be influenced by changes in the hormonal and metabolic milieu. Optimal management of these conditions requires the integrated efforts of the otolaryngologist and the endocrinologist. The presence of hearing loss espe

[The jugular fossa--observations in a Norwegian medieval population].

A high jugular bulb and fossa has been observed in cases of bleeding complications in neur-otologic surgery, conductive and sensori-neural hearing loss, tinnitus and vertigo. Comparison of 311 skulls from the Oslo mediaeval material with data from other studies showed good agreement regarding the frequency of high fossae, dehiscences, and side and sex differences. The correlation (Pearson's r) of fossa size between the two sides, with the right as the independent variable, and also the correlation between foramen size and fossa depth was less than expected from descriptions in anatomical texts

4D-printed multifunctional hydrogels as flexible strain sensors and nerve conduits.

Conductive hydrogels are critical for advanced bioelectronics and the repair of electroactive tissues. However, developing conductive hydrogels into complex biomimetic shapes with good flexibility and bioactivity poses a major biofabrication challenge. This study utilizes dual-component hydrogel inks based on alginate incorporating conductive fCNT (acid-functionalized carbon nanotube) nanofillers, with the composite gel exhibiting an electrical conductivity of 6.6 ± 0.5 mS cm-1 at 2 mg ml-1 fCNT loading. Owing to their good combination of electrical conductivity and mechanical properties, the

Anesthetic Management of Children and Adolescents With Giant Axonal Neuropathy: A Large Case Series.

Giant axonal neuropathy (GAN) is a rare autosomal recessive neurodegenerative disorder caused by mutations in the GAN gene, which encodes for gigaxonin, a protein involved in intermediate filament processing in neural cells and fibroblasts. We report on 14 GAN patients who underwent 77 anesthetics during the conduct of an intrathecal gene transfer clinical trial from April 2015 to August 2020. We observed only a few nonsignificant perianesthetic complications. Our data expand the knowledge regarding safety of anesthesia for patients with this rare and potentially fatal disease and highlights t

Imaging behavioural complications of Parkinson's disease.

In addition to motor symptoms, behavioural complications are commonly found in patients with Parkinson's disease (PD). Behavioural complications, including depression, anxiety, apathy, impulse control disorder and psychosis, together have a large impact on PD patient's quality of life. Many neuroimaging studies using PET, SPECT and MRI techniques have been conducted to study the underlying neural mechanisms of PD pathogenesis and pathophysiology in relation to its behavioural complications. This review will survey these PET, SPECT and MRI studies to describe the current understanding of the ne

Bingeing rats: a model of intermittent excessive behavior?

Intermittent excessive behaviors (IEB) characterize a variety human disorders including binge eating, drug abuse, alcoholism, aberrant sexual conduct, and compulsive gambling. Clinical co-morbidity exists among IEB, and limited treatment options are available. The use of behavioral models of bingeing and other feeding protocols is beginning to clarify neural similarities and differences that exist between IEB directed toward obtaining and consuming food and IEB directed toward obtaining and consuming drugs of abuse. Research from this laboratory using a limited access binge-type eating protoco

Conductive hearing loss in patients with velopharyngeal insufficiency.

This study involved audiologic and otologic evaluations of 77 subjects with VPI not due to overt cleft palate, aged 4-16 years. Audiological findings revealed that: 49 per cent had a hearing loss (74 per cent conductive, 16 per cent sensori neural, 10 per cent mixed) and that 18 per cent of the subjects had inconsistent audiologic findings. Otologic evaluations revealed that 44 per cent had abnormalities of the tympanic membrane. It can be concluded that the VPI subjects differed appreciably from the normal and more closely resembled a cleft palate population.

Electroactive Nanomaterials in Tissue Engineering: Advances, Mechanisms and Future Perspectives.

Simulation of the dynamic electromechanical microenvironment is of great significance in tissue engineering, especially in the regeneration of those electrically responsive tissues, such as nerves, heart and bone. In recent years, electroactive nanomaterials (ENMs) have shown great potentials in tissue engineering due to their intrinsic conductivity, piezoelectricity and redox activity, which can regulate cell functions in a controlled manner. Reports regarding the use of ENMs for tissue engineering have been well documented in the past few years, and it is time to conduct the systematic summa

Bioinspired Super-Robust Conductive Hydrogels for Machine Learning-Assisted Tactile Perception System.

Conductive hydrogels have attracted significant attention due to exceptional flexibility, electrochemical property, and biocompatibility. However, the low mechanical strength can compromise their stability under high stress, making the material susceptible to fracture in complex or harsh environments. Achieving a balance between conductivity and mechanical robustness remains a critical challenge. In this study, super-robust conductive hydrogels were designed and developed with highly oriented structures and densified networks, by employing techniques such as stretch-drying-induced directional

Exploring partially shared valuation-related neural responses between abstract desirability and food incentive evaluation.

Motivational evaluation can generalize across diverse goals, while the incentive value of biologically relevant stimuli such as food is dynamically modulated by physiological need. The present study examined whether cross-category desirability evaluation under a non-deprived baseline condition and food incentive evaluation under experimentally manipulated Hunger and Satiety states show partially similar valuation-related neural responses within the same individuals. Participants underwent functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) while completing two complementary experiments: an abstract d

Impact of Weekly Community-Based Dance Training Over 8 Months on Depression and Blood Oxygen Level-Dependent Signals in the Subcallosal Cingulate Gyrus for People With Parkinson Disease: Observational Study.

BACKGROUND: Dance has emerged as a complementary treatment that may promote adaptive neural plasticity while improving symptoms of Parkinson disease (PD), such as balance, gait, posture, and walking. Understanding brain changes that arise from participation in dance interventions is important as these neural plastic changes play an important role in protecting and healing the brain. Although dance has been shown to improve PD motor and nonmotor symptoms, the neural mechanisms underlying these changes, specifically depression and mood, remain elusive. Further, many side effects of PD drug treat

Using expert-reviewed CSAM to train CNNs and its anthropological analysis.

Machine learning methods for the identification of child sexual abuse materials (CSAM) have been previously studied, however, they have serious limitations. Firstly, the training sets used to train the appropriate machine learning algorithms were not previously annotated by a forensic expert in anthropology. Secondly, previously presented solutions have rarely used models trained using real pornographic content involving children. Thirdly, previous studies have not presented a detailed justification for the classification decisions made, which is important due to the recent guidelines of the E
