Bone strain index as a predictor of further vertebral fracture in osteoporotic women: An artificial intelligence-based analysis.

BACKGROUND: Osteoporosis is an asymptomatic disease of high prevalence and incidence, leading to bone fractures burdened by high mortality and disability, mainly when several subsequent fractures occur. A fragility fracture predictive model, Artificial Intelligence-based, to identify dual X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) variables able to characterise those patients who are prone to further fractures called Bone Strain Index, was evaluated in this study. METHODS: In a prospective, longitudinal, multicentric study 172 female outpatients with at least one vertebral fracture at the first observation w

Artificial intelligence modelling in differentiating core biopsies of fibroadenoma from phyllodes tumor.

Breast fibroepithelial lesions (FEL) are biphasic tumors which consist of benign fibroadenomas (FAs) and the rarer phyllodes tumors (PTs). FAs and PTs have overlapping features, but have different clinical management, which makes correct core biopsy diagnosis important. This study used whole-slide images (WSIs) of 187 FA and 100 PT core biopsies, to investigate the potential role of artificial intelligence (AI) in FEL diagnosis. A total of 9228 FA patches and 6443 PT patches was generated from WSIs of the training subset, with each patch being 224 × 224 pixel in size. Our model employed a two-

Can AI outperform a junior resident? Comparison of deep neural network to first-year radiology residents for identification of pneumothorax.

PURPOSE: To (1) develop a deep learning system (DLS) using a deep convolutional neural network (DCNN) for identification of pneumothorax, (2) compare its performance to first-year radiology residents, and (3) evaluate the ability of a DLS to augment radiology residents by detecting missed pneumothoraces. METHODS: This was a retrospective study performed in September 2018. We obtained 112,120 chest radiographs (CXRs) from the NIH ChestXray14 database, of which 4360 cases (4%) were labeled as pneumothorax by natural language processing. We utilized 111,518 CXRs to train and validate the ResNet-

Atopic dermatitis severity during exposure to air pollutants and weather changes with an Artificial Neural Network (ANN) analysis.

BACKGROUND: Epidemiological studies have shown an association between global warming, air pollution, and allergic diseases. Several air pollutants, including volatile organic compounds, formaldehyde, toluene, nitrogen dioxide (NO2 ), and particulate matter, act as risk factors for the development or aggravation of atopic dermatitis (AD). We evaluated the impact of air pollutants and weather changes on AD patients. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Sixty AD patients ≥5 years of age (mean age: 23.5 ± 12.5 years), living in the Campania Region (Southern Italy), were followed for 18 months. The primary outc

Machine learning augmented near-infrared spectroscopy: In vivo follow-up of cartilage defects.

OBJECTIVE: To assess the potential of near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) for in vivo arthroscopic monitoring of cartilage defects. METHOD: Sharp and blunt cartilage grooves were induced in the radiocarpal and intercarpal joints of Shetland ponies and monitored at baseline (0 weeks) and at three follow-up timepoints (11, 23, and 39 weeks) by measuring near-infrared spectra in vivo at and around the grooves. The animals were sacrificed after 39 weeks and the joints were harvested. Spectra were reacquired ex vivo to ensure reliability of in vivo measurements and for reference analyses. Additional

Tracheal Sound Analysis Using a Deep Neural Network to Detect Sleep Apnea.

STUDY OBJECTIVES: Portable devices for home sleep apnea testing are often limited by their inability to discriminate sleep/wake status, possibly resulting in underestimations. Tracheal sound (TS), which can be visualized as a spectrogram, carries information about apnea/hypopnea and sleep/wake status. We hypothesized that image analysis of all-night TS recordings by a deep neural network (DNN) would be capable of detecting breathing events and classifying sleep/wake status. The aim of this study is to develop a DNN-based system for sleep apnea testing and validate it using a large sampling of

Combining a gravitational search algorithm, particle swarm optimization, and fuzzy rules to improve the classification performance of a feed-forward neural network.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: A feed-forward neural network (FNN) is a type of artificial neural network that has been widely used in medical diagnosis, data mining, stock market analysis, and other fields. Many studies have used FNN to develop medical decision-making systems to assist doctors in clinical diagnosis. The aim of the learning process in FNN is to find the best combination of connection weights and biases to achieve the minimum error. However, in many cases, FNNs converge to the local optimum but not the global optimum. Using open disease datasets, the purpose of this study was to opt

Detection of Congestive Heart Failure Based on LSTM-Based Deep Network via Short-Term RR Intervals.

Congestive heart failure (CHF) refers to the inadequate blood filling function of the ventricular pump and it may cause an insufficient heart discharge volume that fails to meet the needs of body metabolism. Heart rate variability (HRV) based on the RR interval is a proven effective predictor of CHF. Short-term HRV has been used widely in many healthcare applications to monitor patients' health, especially in combination with mobile phones and smart watches. Inspired by the inception module from GoogLeNet, we combined long short-term memory (LSTM) and an Inception module for CHF detection. Fiv

From Target to Drug: Generative Modeling for the Multimodal Structure-Based Ligand Design.

Chemical space is impractically large, and conventional structure-based virtual screening techniques cannot be used to simply search through the entire space to discover effective bioactive molecules. To address this shortcoming, we propose a generative adversarial network to generate, rather than search, diverse three-dimensional ligand shapes complementary to the pocket. Furthermore, we show that the generated molecule shapes can be decoded using a shape-captioning network into a sequence of SMILES enabling directly the structure-based de novo drug design. We evaluate the quality of the meth

Neural networks for automatic scoring of arthritis disease activity on ultrasound images.

BACKGROUND: The development of standardised methods for ultrasound (US) scanning and evaluation of synovitis activity by the OMERACT-EULAR Synovitis Scoring (OESS) system is a major step forward in the use of US in the diagnosis and monitoring of patients with inflammatory arthritis. The variation in interpretation of disease activity on US images can affect diagnosis, treatment and outcomes in clinical trials. We, therefore, set out to investigate if we could utilise neural network architecture for the interpretation of disease activity on Doppler US images, using the OESS scoring system. ME

A method for hand-foot-mouth disease prediction using GeoDetector and LSTM model in Guangxi, China.

Hand-foot-mouth disease (HFMD) is a common infectious disease in children and is particularly severe in Guangxi, China. Meteorological conditions are known to play a pivotal role in the HFMD. Previous studies have reported numerous models to predict the incidence of HFMD. In this study, we proposed a new method for the HFMD prediction using GeoDetector and a Long Short-Term Memory neural network (LSTM). The daily meteorological factors and HFMD records in Guangxi during 2014-2015 were adopted. First, potential risk factors for the occurrence of HFMD were identified based on the GeoDetector. Th

Iterative free-energy optimization for recurrent neural networks (INFERNO).

The intra-parietal lobe coupled with the Basal Ganglia forms a working memory that demonstrates strong planning capabilities for generating robust yet flexible neuronal sequences. Neurocomputational models however, often fails to control long range neural synchrony in recurrent spiking networks due to spontaneous activity. As a novel framework based on the free-energy principle, we propose to see the problem of spikes' synchrony as an optimization problem of the neurons sub-threshold activity for the generation of long neuronal chains. Using a stochastic gradient descent, a reinforcement signa

Beyond slots and resources: grounding cognitive concepts in neural dynamics.

Research over the past decade has suggested that the ability to hold information in visual working memory (VWM) may be limited to as few as three to four items. However, the precise nature and source of these capacity limits remains hotly debated. Most commonly, capacity limits have been inferred from studies of visual change detection, in which performance declines systematically as a function of the number of items that participants must remember. According to one view, such declines indicate that a limited number of fixed-resolution representations are held in independent memory "slots." An

Identification of neural networks that contribute to motion sickness through principal components analysis of fos labeling induced by galvanic vestibular stimulation.

Motion sickness is a complex condition that includes both overt signs (e.g., vomiting) and more covert symptoms (e.g., anxiety and foreboding). The neural pathways that mediate these signs and symptoms are yet to identified. This study mapped the distribution of c-fos protein (Fos)-like immunoreactivity elicited during a galvanic vestibular stimulation paradigm that is known to induce motion sickness in felines. A principal components analysis was used to identify networks of neurons activated during this stimulus paradigm from functional correlations between Fos labeling in different nuclei.

Atmosphere pollutants and mortality rate of respiratory diseases in Beijing.

In this paper, we apply the method of Granger causality, which is more accurate than classical correlation analysis method, to determine whether the main air pollutants--Nitrogen oxides (NO(x)), SO(2) (Sulfur Dioxide), CO (carbon monoxide), TSP (total suspended particulates), PM(10) (particulate matter smaller than 10 microns)--and the mortality of respiratory diseases of the residents in Beijing have causal relationship. After ensuring NO(x), SO(2) and CO as the responsible substances, we use the time series method to construct the autoregressive integrated moving average model (ARIMA) of the

Modeling photosynthetically oxygenated biodegradation processes using artificial neural networks.

The complexity of the mechanisms underlying organic matter mineralization and nutrient removal in algal-bacterial photobioreactors during the treatment of residual wastewaters has severely hindered the development of mechanistic models able to accurately describe these processes. Artificial neural networks (ANNs) are capable of inferring the complex relationships existing between input and output process variables without a detailed description of the mechanisms governing the process, and should therefore be more suitable for the modeling of photosynthetically oxygenated systems. Thus, a neura

Prediction of bone mass gain by bone turnover parameters after parathyroidectomy for primary hyperparathyroidism: neural network software statistical analysis.

BACKGROUND: Primary hyperparathyroidism (pHPT) is the most frequent endocrine hypersecretion disease, and parathyroidectomy is the only curative option, since pharmacologic therapy reduces hypercalcemia but does not impede parathyroid hormone hypersecretion. According to guidelines from the National Institutes of Health, parathyroidectomy is associated with bone mass increase in some asymptomatic patients, while in others bone mass is not changed after surgery. Therefore, we performed the present study in an attempt to elucidate whether a preoperative biochemical bone parameter can be predicti

Determination of glottal excitation cycles in running speech.

The three-channel pitch determination algorithm (PDA) presented in this paper combines a short-term analysis PDA, which derives fundamental frequency via a periodicity criterion, and two time domain PDAs that determine the instants of glottal closure according to local signal criteria. The first of these algorithms correlates the speech signal with an estimate of the impulse response of the vocal tract; the second applies a neural network. The reliability of these time domain PDAs is increased by constraints on the range of F0 imposed by the short-term analysis PDA. First results show that the
