An estimation of the effect of finding nurses helpful on early breastfeeding exclusivity mediated via breastfeeding self-efficacy, using a counterfactual approach and G-computation.

BACKGROUND: Exclusive breastfeeding is recommended for at least the first six months of life, however in South Africa only 32% of mothers are exclusively breastfeeding to six months and discontinuation happens early. Nurses are a key resource for promoting breastfeeding self-efficacy and thus exclusivity, yet mothers often report nurses to have poor attitudes, which deter health seeking behaviour. This study aimed to infer whether perceived support from nurses immediately postpartum was causally related to breastfeeding exclusivity, and specifically whether this effect was mediated via breastf

Acceptability and usability of a nurse-assisted remote patient monitoring intervention for the post-hospital follow-up of patients with long-term illness: A qualitative study.

BACKGROUND: Patients living with long-term chronic illnesses often need ongoing medical attention, lifestyle adjustments, and psychosocial support beyond the initial diagnosis and treatment phases. Many experience illness deterioration and subsequently require hospitalisation, especially in the transition period after hospital discharge. A promising strategy for managing long-term conditions is promoting self-management. eHealth interventions involving remote patient monitoring have the potential to promote self-management and offer a more seamless bridge between the hospital and the patient´s

Association between preoperative on-site CCU visits and postoperative delirium in patients undergoing cardiac surgery: A retrospective cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Postoperative delirium (POD) is a common complication after cardiac surgery (CS), with symptoms like attention disorders and even delays patients' recovery. AIMS: To evaluate the impact of preoperative on-site visits in the cardiac care unit (CCU) on POD after CS. STUDY DESIGN: Patients admitted to the CCU with extracorporeal CS were included in the visiting or non-visiting group according to whether they were on visiting week. The visiting group received a preoperative visit from a nurse-led multidisciplinary visiting team (including CCU nurses and physicians) 1 week before surg

Knowledge and attitudes toward learning disabilities among medical and nursing students in Vietnam: findings from a national cross-sectional survey.

Learning disabilities (LD) is under-researched in medical and nursing education worldwide, especially regarding students' perceptions of their peers with LD-an area particularly overlooked in low- and middle-income countries like Vietnam. As future healthcare professionals, whether Vietnamese medical and nursing students are aware of or accurately understand LD, and whether their perceptions may pose barriers to creating a more inclusive educational environment for peers with LD, remained unanswered. Our study investigated the knowledge and attitudes towards LD among 845 undergraduate medical

Management of the Patient With HIV/Hepatitis C Drug Interactions: A Guide for Nurses and Nurse Practitioners.

Approximately one third of patients coinfected with HIV and hepatitis C virus (HCV) who initiate direct-acting antivirals (DAAs) for HCV treatment may have to switch antiretroviral therapy (ART) because of drug interactions. ART switches can negatively affect quality of life, increase HIV symptom burden, and delay HCV therapy. Approaches to identify ART/DAA drug interactions that minimize the impact of switching ART are urgently needed. Nurses can lead the way in addressing this new and major need. We provide a guide for registered nurses and nurse practitioners who care for patients coinfecte

Nursing Assessment, Education, and Care of Extremely Premature Neonates with Patent Ductus Arteriosus.

The care of extremely premature neonates with suspected or confirmed diagnosis of patent ductus arteriosus (PDA) is a frequent challenge for pediatric nurses. It is important for nurses to have adequate knowledge of the normal postnatal changes in cardiovascular and pulmonary function to recognize any adverse symptoms. Nurses caring for these vulnerable neonates must have a thorough understanding of the pathophysiology of a PDA in order to assess, plan, and implement patient-centered care. Recognition of characteristic symptoms of PDA in a timely manner is essential for optimal management and

Tuberculosis infection among young nursing trainees in South India.

BACKGROUND: Among healthcare workers in developing countries, nurses spend a large amount of time in direct contact with tuberculosis (TB) patients, and are at high risk for acquisition of TB infection and disease. To better understand the epidemiology of nosocomial TB among nurses, we recruited a cohort of young nursing trainees at Christian Medical College, a large, tertiary medical school hospital in Southern India. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: Among 535 nursing students enrolled in 2007, 468 gave consent to participate, and 436 underwent two-step tuberculin skin testing (TST). A majori

Pigtail catheters used in the treatment of pneumothoraces in the neonate.

Air leak in the neonatal population can be a deadly situation. Neonates have many risk factors that can contribute to air leak. These include, but are not limited to, respiratory distress syndrome; mechanical ventilation; sepsis; pneumonia; aspiration of meconium, blood, or amniotic fluid; and congenital malformations. In the NICU, the staff must be prepared to diagnose and treat pneumothoraces in a timely manner. Pathophysiology of air leaks in the neonate including the anatomy of the chest and diagnosis, indications, and common methods for the treatment of a pneumothorax in an infant is expl

Combating a rising incidence of Legionnaire's disease.

A statement released last week by the Health Protection Agency highlighted a recent increase in the incidence of Legionnaire's disease in England and Wales. Although an upsurge in cases is common at this time of year due to people returning from holidays abroad, only a small proportion of the recent cases can be attributed to foreign travel. Nurses need to be aware of the symptoms and what health measures they can take.

Caring for children with autism in the school setting.

Children with autism present unique challenges related to communication, behavior, and social skills. Each child with an autistic spectrum disorder (ASD) exhibits individual characteristics of the disorder. Early identification of autistic spectrum disorder has been shown to improve the child's benefit from educational interventions. There may be health issues related to autism including seizure disorders and dietary restrictions. Students with autism need special consideration when they come to the health office for screening, assessment of injuries, or administration of medication. Collabora

Nursing assistants' opinions of oral health care provision.

Understanding the attitudes and perceptions about oral health in nursing assistants (NAs) may facilitate efforts to improve daily oral care in long-term-care settings. By exploring the attitudes of individuals charged with daily oral care, we may gain insight into the level of care provided for the residents. To explore motivation for oral care by NAs, we developed a 28-item survey. The survey included descriptive information and a 20-item Likert-type instrument dealing with oral care for self-care and dependent individuals. Factor analysis was used to test the validity of the constructs inten

An evaluation of standardized patients in improving clinical breast examinations for military women.

There is a need to improve the quality of clinical breast examination (CBE) and breast cancer screening for women. The purpose of this study was to determine whether instructions from a standardized patient to military healthcare providers would increase the quality of CBE and breast cancer screening for military women. The study used a 2-group pretest and posttest experimental design with random assignment by study site. Before and after the intervention, the providers completed a 13-item survey to assess their current breast cancer screening practices and the standardized patient used an inv

Integrated care pathway: the prevention and management of pressure ulcers.

The introduction of this pathway for the prevention and management of pressure ulcers was influenced by the development of the pathway for the management of a patient with a fractured neck of femur. Systematic documentation of preventative measures for patients with a fractured neck of femur helped reduce the incidence of pressure ulcers in this high-risk group. The original draft was informed by evidence-based clinical practice guidelines. This draft of the pathway was piloted, reviewed and changed in line with current evidence and comments from users. It was invaluable to pilot the pathway a

HEALTH LITERACY AND AWARENESS OF NURSES AND NURSING STUDENTS ON FENTANYL AND DRUG ABUSE.

BACKGROUND: The rise of synthetic opioids, particularly fentanyl, has intensified the global drug abuse crisis, posing serious challenges to healthcare systems. Nurses and nursing students play a crucial role in prevention, early identification, and emergency management of opioid-related cases. Health Literacy (HL), the ability to access, understand, and use health information, has been proposed as a critical determinant of clinical competence in this context. This study aims to assess the knowledge, awareness, and health literacy of nurses and nursing students in relation to fentanyl and drug

Randomised controlled trials as part of clinical care: A seven-step routinisation framework proposal.

Evidence translation in wound care relies on the need for evidence generation. Clinical practice may generate evidence only if evidence-generating research projects, such as randomised controlled trials (RCTs), became routinised in clinical settings. The aim of this study was to identify optimal trial-related practices to routinise trial-related activities in Melbourne-located wound clinics as reported by clinicians and researchers. We conducted a secondary analysis of the available data on how to routinise RCTs in clinical care, with a focus on enablers and suggestions provided by the partici
