Evaluation, diagnosis, and treatment of gastrointestinal disorders in individuals with ASDs: a consensus report.

Autism spectrum disorders (ASDs) are common and clinically heterogeneous neurodevelopmental disorders. Gastrointestinal disorders and associated symptoms are commonly reported in individuals with ASDs, but key issues such as the prevalence and best treatment of these conditions are incompletely understood. A central difficulty in recognizing and characterizing gastrointestinal dysfunction with ASDs is the communication difficulties experienced by many affected individuals. A multidisciplinary panel reviewed the medical literature with the aim of generating evidence-based recommendations for di

Impact of preterm birth on the onset of panic disorder in later life - Results from the Gutenberg Prematurity Study (GPS).

BACKGROUND: The present study aimed to investigate whether prematurity and perinatal stress exert long-term effects on the onset of panic disorder in later life. METHODS: From 40,189 adults born in Germany between 1969 and 2002, a study cohort (n = 427) stratified by gestational age (GA) (extremely preterm: GA < 29 weeks; very preterm: GA 29-32 weeks; moderately preterm: GA 33-36 weeks; and full-term GA ≥ 37 weeks) was selected (age 28.5 ± 8.7 years). Multivariable logistic regression analyses were conducted to investigate associations between gestational age at birth and panic disorder adjus

Gastroesophageal reflux disease in neonates and infants : when and how to treat.

Gastroesophageal reflux (GER) is defined as the involuntary retrograde passage of gastric contents into the esophagus with or without regurgitation or vomiting. It is a frequently experienced physiologic condition occurring several times a day, mostly postprandial and causes no symptoms. These infants are also called 'happy spitters'. Impact of socioeconomic determinants on outcomes of eight select conditions for which self-care is a modality for prevention and treatment: a scoping review.

We conducted a scoping review of peer-reviewed literature published between January 1, 1990 and October 31, 2021, to identify socioeconomic determinants that contribute to higher burden and adverse outcomes in diseases for which self-care is an important modality of treatment and prevention. We identified these diseases using over-the-counter medicines sales data sourced from IQVIA. We searched Ovid Medline, PubMed, and EMBASE databases for articles published in English using inclusion/exclusion criteria. We analyzed articles covering 42 diseases that qualified as cardiovascular disorders (219

Global, regional, and national burden and attributable risk factors of neurological disorders: The Global Burden of Disease study 1990-2019.

BACKGROUND: Neurological disorders are a major and increasing global health challenge, which accounts for a substantial portion of the disease burden worldwide. The aim of this systematic analysis is to present the most comprehensive and up-to-date estimates of disease burden, epidemiological trends, and attributable risk factors of neurological disorders at global, regional, and national levels. METHODS: We extracted data of 18 neurological disorders from the Global Burden of Disease 2019 study database. The burden of neurological disorders was measured using the incidence, prevalence, morta

Efficacy and safety of twice-weekly administration of three RDAs of iron and folic acid with and without complement of 14 essential micronutrients at one or two RDAs: a placebo-controlled intervention trial in anemic Cambodian infants 6 to 24 months of age.

OBJECTIVE: To determine the differential efficacy and safety of twice-weekly administration of 3 RDAs of iron and folic acid, with and without a complement of 2 RDAs of 11, and 1 RDA of 3 additional essential micronutrients as compared to a placebo control (PlbCON) given as foodLETs. SUBJECTS/METHODS: A total of 250 children aged 6-24 months were enrolled after recruitment by village health workers; 19 of them dropped out during the trial. Children were assigned to one of three treatment arms and followed for 20.5 weeks; 41 supervised twice-weekly dosings of 30 mg of iron plus folic acid, eit
