Pilot Feasibility Study of a Multi-View Vision Based Scoring Method for Cervical Dystonia.

Abnormal movement of the head and neck is a typical symptom of Cervical Dystonia (CD). Accurate scoring on the severity scale is of great significance for treatment planning. The traditional scoring method is to use a protractor or contact sensors to calculate the angle of the movement, but this method is time-consuming, and it will interfere with the movement of the patient. In the recent outbreak of the coronavirus disease, the need for remote diagnosis and treatment of CD has become extremely urgent for clinical practice. To solve these problems, we propose a multi-view vision based CD seve

A Pilot Investigation into Targeted Muscle Reinnervation for Complex Regional Pain Syndrome, Type II.

UNLABELLED: Complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS) is a debilitating condition, characterized by severe pain with vascular, motor, or trophic changes. Varied presentations make this a diagnostic and therapeutic challenge. There is a lack of high-quality evidence demonstrating efficacy for most existing therapies, particularly with surgical intervention for type II CRPS (CRPS-II). Targeted muscle reinnervation (TMR) is a surgical technique to transfer the terminal end of a divided nerve to a recipient motor nerve, shown to limit phantom limb pain, residual limb pain, and postamputation neuroma p

A pilot study to show that asymptomatic sexually transmitted infections alter the foreskin epithelial proteome.

There is limited data on the role of asymptomatic STIs (aSTIs) on the risk of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) acquisition in the male genital tract (MGT). The impact of foreskin removal on lowering HIV acquisition is well described, but molecular events leading to HIV acquisition are unclear. Here, in this pilot study, we show that asymptomatic urethral infection with Chlamydia trachomatis (CT) significantly impacts the foreskin proteome composition. We developed and optimized a shotgun liquid chromatography coupled tandem mass spectrometry (MS)-based proteomics approach and utilized this o

Intraoperative Nerve Conduction Studies During Open Carpal Tunnel Release: A Pilot Study.

BACKGROUND: Severe traction injury to the brachial plexus (BP) during childbirth can induce the formation of intraneural scar tissue or neuroma in continuity. This can lead to nerve entrapment and demyelination, which inhibit axonal transport to the target muscles. Secondary complications include muscle weakness, contractures, joint deformity, and altered limb growth with prolonged and persistent disability. These patients find difficulty performing activities of daily living. BP neurolysis is one of the multistage reconstructive procedures in patients with obstetric brachial plexus injury (OB

A Pilot Study to Evaluate Early Predictive Value of Thorax Perfusion-CT in Advanced NSCLC.

BACKGROUND: The role of perfusion computed tomography (pCT) in detecting changes in tumor vascularization as part of a response to antiangiogenic therapy in non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) remains unclear. METHODS: In this prospective pilot study (IMPACT trial, NCT02316327), we aimed to determine the ability of pCT to detect early changes in blood flow (BF), blood volume (BV), and permeability (PMB), and to explore whether these changes could predict the response at day +42 in patients with advanced, treatment-naive, non-squamous NSCLC treated with cisplatin and gemcitabine plus bevacizuma

Surfactant therapy for COVID-19 related ARDS: a retrospective case-control pilot study.

BACKGROUND: COVID-19 causes acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) and depletes the lungs of surfactant, leading to prolonged mechanical ventilation and death. The feasibility and safety of surfactant delivery in COVID-19 ARDS patients have not been established. METHODS: We performed retrospective analyses of data from patients receiving off-label use of exogenous natural surfactant during the COVID-19 pandemic. Seven COVID-19 PCR positive ARDS patients received liquid Curosurf (720 mg) in 150 ml normal saline, divided into five 30 ml aliquots) and delivered via a bronchoscope into second

Influence of surface anesthesia of the nasal cavity on oral tissues in the anterior region - a pilot study.

Nasal surface anesthesia is a simple, non-invasive method with a not yet fully understood effect on oral tissues. Should it prove to be successful in dental medicine, it could replace or at least complement the more invasive injection anesthesia, especially in children after dental trauma. The local anesthetic Tenaphin (tetracaine hydrochloride and naphazoline nitrate) was applied to 105 patients prior to ear, nose and throat medical diagnosis or therapy. After different exposure times, the influence on the oral tissues in the anterior region was examined by a dentist in the context of a pilot

Irreversible Electroporation Treatment With Intraoperative Biliary Stenting for Unresectable Perihilar Cholangiocarcinoma: A Pilot Study.

BACKGROUND: Treating perihilar cholangiocarcinoma (PHCC) is particularly difficult due to the fact that it is usually in an advanced stage at the time of diagnosis. Irreversible electroporation treatment (IRE) involves the local administration of a high-voltage electric current to target lesions without causing damage to surrounding structures. This study investigated the safety and efficacy of using IRE in conjunction with intraoperative biliary stent placement in cases of unresectable PHCC. METHODS: This study enrolled 17 patients with unresectable Bismuth type III/IV PHCC who underwent IRE

The effect of vitamin D supplementation on circulating osteoprogenitor cells: A pilot randomized controlled trial.

Circulating osteoprogenitor (COP) cells are a relatively newly discovered mesenchymal precursors population in the peripheral blood. While some aspects of their physiology have been documented in vitro, little is known about their behavior in vivo. To facilitate understanding regarding their potential role in the management of musculoskeletal disease, more research into how these cells respond to growth factors and hormones in vivo is still required. To this end, we performed a randomized controlled pilot study investigating the effect of vitamin D supplementation on COP cells in healthy older
