Sleep stage sequence analysis of sleep onset REM periods in the hypersomnias.

BACKGROUND: The Multiple Sleep Latency Test (MSLT) remains an important diagnostic tool in the diagnosis of hypersomnias. However, a positive MSLT may be found in other sleep disorders, such as behaviourally induced inadequate sleep syndrome (BIISS). It has been demonstrated that in sleep onset rapid eye movement (SOREM) periods in BIISS, REM sleep tends to arise from stage 2 sleep (non-REM (NREM) 2), rather than stage 1 sleep (NREM1), as in narcolepsy. METHODS: We performed sleep stage sequence analysis on 127 patients with nocturnal polysomnography and MSLT, including 25 with narcolepsy wit…

Documented poor sleep among methadone-maintained patients is associated with chronic pain and benzodiazepine abuse, but not with methadone dose.

UNLABELLED: Following the findings of perceived poor sleep and of chronic pain among former heroin addicts, current methadone maintenance treatment (MMT) patients, and its possible relation to methadone dose, we studied these patients' objective sleep parameters. Former heroin addicts maintained on "Low" (n=19, <80 mg/d) or "High" (n=25, >150 mg/d) methadone doses, underwent one-night polysomnography (PSG). Patients filled Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) and chronic pain questionnaires, and current drug abuse was assessed by urine tests. RESULTS: Of the 44 patients, 18 (40.9%) had chron…

Parental symptom report and periodic limb movements of sleep in children.

STUDY OBJECTIVES: To examine the prevalence of raised periodic limb movements of sleep (PLMS) index in children referred for polysomnography (PSG) and whether parental report of symptoms correlates with objective measurement during PSG. METHODS: Records of children undergoing PSG from January 2006 to July 2006 were retrospectively reviewed. At their initial sleep clinic visit, parents had been asked whether their child was restless or moved their legs excessively during sleep. Their response to these questions was compared to the child's PLMS index (number of periodic limb movements per hour)…
