An analysis of 64 patients with congenital stationary night blindness showed that all had essentially normal fundi. Electroretinography (ERG) showed a normal a wave with extremely reduced b wave (negative type) when recorded with a single bright white stimulus in the dark. We classified these patients into two groups based on the evaluation of rod ERG and/or psychophysical dark adaptation measured with an 11 degree test target at 15 degrees in the upper part of the retina. One group (35 patients) lacked rod function (complete type). Nine patients could not be classified. No pedigree showed a c

Spatial localization was investigated for each eye of amblyopic observers using a bisection paradigm. The stimuli were comprised of a grating composed of bright lines, and a test line. The test line was either placed above the grating (bisection-no overlap) or within the row of lines comprising the grating (bisection-with overlap) and thresholds for each bisection task were measured as a function of the fundamental spatial frequency of the grating. Vernier thresholds were also measured. For the nonamblyopic eyes at low spatial frequencies, bisection thresholds were a constant fraction ("Weber"

The authors present a case of a thirty-eight-year-old patient with Alport syndrome. The patient had several ocular symptoms of the disease and has been treated for systemic problems in connection with Alport syndrome since he was fifteen years old. At that age the patient also underwent a kidney transplant in order to deal with renal insufficiency. To date, he still uses immunosuppressants and antihypertensives. Furthermore, the patient suffers from perceptive deafness. The patient visited our clinic in 2021 with a request to solve his high refractive error, in which the diopters were so high

The application of monochromatic light in myopia has remained a research hotspot in the field of myopia prevention and control. With rapid advances in clinical applications, numerous studies have confirmed its unique potential in slowing axial elongation in children and adolescents. However, the underlying mechanisms of monochromatic light remain inconclusive within the academic community. This review summarizes recent progress in animal studies investigating the effects of monochromatic light characteristics-including wavelength, exposure duration, light intensity, and exposure initiation per

Marfan's syndrome (MFS) is an autosomal dominant connective tissue disorder with defect in the fibrillin-1 gene. The most common ocular manifestation is subluxated lens in the superotemporal direction, accounting for 50%-85% of total cases. The association of lens coloboma with MFS has been described in literature, but the coexistence of lens coloboma with ectopia lentis is a rare feature. Here, we describe three cases of MFS including a case of bilateral lens coloboma with ectopia lentis: case 1 - a 39-year-old male with inferotemporal lens subluxation in the right eye and superotemporal lens

Nabais Sa-de Vries syndrome (NSDVS) is a neurodevelopmental disorder first described in 2020. The syndrome is caused by de novo missense mutations in speckle-type pox virus and zinc finger protein (SPOP) on chromosome 17q21. The syndrome is divided into two forms (NSDVS Type 1 and NSDVS Type 2) based on the consequence of the mutation involved. In this report, we present the clinical features in a young male patient with suspected NSDVS1 and summarize the features of the reported affected individuals thus far, with a focus on the ophthalmic manifestations. Similar to other individuals with NSD

Craniosynostosis, a premature fusion of cranial sutures that can be isolated or syndromic, is a congenital defect with a broad, multisystem clinical spectrum. The visual pathway is prone to derangements in patients with craniosynostosis, particularly in syndromic cases, and there is a risk for permanent vision loss when ocular disease complications are not identified and properly treated early in life. Extensive advancements have been made in our understanding of the etiologies underlying vision loss in craniosynostosis over the last 20 years. Children with craniosynostosis are susceptible to

Tietz syndrome and Waardenburg syndrome type 2A are allelic conditions caused by MITF mutations. Tietz syndrome is inherited in an autosomal dominant pattern and is characterized by congenital deafness and generalized skin, hair, and eye hypopigmentation, while Waardenburg syndrome type 2A typically includes variable degrees of sensorineural hearing loss and patches of de-pigmented skin, hair, and irides. In this paper, we report two unrelated families with MITF mutations. The first family showed an autosomal dominant pattern and variable expressivity. The second patient was isolated. MITF gen

A 44-year-old male with no pertinent history other than poor vision for more than 25 years was examined. Best corrected visual acuity was 20/80 OD [MR: +14.25 +1.00 × 15°] and 20/200 OS [MR: +15.00 +1.50 × 175°]. Significant limitation in ocular movements and the presence of an orbital lipodermoid in the infero-temporal aspect of each eye were noted. Forced duction test was positive for the same directions of limitation indicating possible extraocular muscle fibrosis. Ophthalmoscopy was remarkable for the presence of peripheral bony spicules. Corneal topography was compatible with keratoconus

BACKGROUND: In psychomotor retardation there is an abnormal development of mental, sensory and motor skills associated with ocular manifestations. There are biological and psychosocial risk factors that predispose an individual to neurological damage. From 50% to 80% of patients with strabismus retardation have special features that differentiate it from the rest of strabismus in healthy patients.
OBJECTIVE: To determine the most common type of strabismus in patients with psychomotor retardation and their clinical features.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: Patients with psychomotor retardation and stra

Autoimmune uveitis is a group of sight-threatening inflammatory diseases associated with an exacerbated immunological response to ocular proteins. The Standardization of Uveitis Nomenclature Working Group Guidelines have recommended the use of corticosteroids as the first line of therapy for patients who present with active uveitis. However, long-term use of corticosteroids is associated with numerous adverse effects including cataract, glaucoma and metabolic disorders. In this context, new drugs developed to treat rheumatic diseases, and other autoimmune diseases, are being employed often as

PURPOSE: To report the intermediate multicenter results of a technique of sutureless intrascleral fixation of a standard 3-piece posterior chamber intraocular lens (PC IOL) in the ciliary sulcus.
SETTING: Four European ophthalmology centers.
METHODS: A technique for sutureless intrascleral fixation of the haptics of a standard 3-piece PC IOL was retrospectively evaluated. The technique uses standardized maneuvers to fixate the PC IOL without need for special haptic architecture or preparation or haptic suturing. All patients having IOL implantation by the technique were evaluated for preoper

Arteriohepatic dysplasia (Alagille syndrome) is a congenital cholestatic disease associated with ocular abnormalities. Three Japanese siblings, a 14-year-old girl, an 11-year-old boy, and a 9-year-old girl with this syndrome were studied. All three patients showed neonatal jaundice, hepatic dysfunction, characteristic facies, and psychomental retardation. The two sisters had cardiac murmurs. Ophthalmological examinations revealed that they had posterior embryotoxon, refractive error, retinochorodial degeneration, and electrophysiological abnormalities. The two sisters showed retinochoroidal de

Myopia is a common ocular disorder characterized by excessive axial elongation, and effective strategies for limiting its progression remain limited. This study investigated whether acupuncture attenuates myopia progression in a guinea pig model of form-deprivation myopia and examined the involvement of scleral inflammation and brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF)-mediated neurotrophic signaling. Guinea pigs were randomly assigned to control, myopia, acupuncture-only, and myopia plus acupuncture groups for phenotypic evaluation. Additional sham acupuncture and myopia-plus-acupuncture group
