Fully-automated segmentation of pathological shoulder muscles in patients with musculo-skeletal diseases is a challenging task due to the huge variability in muscle shape, size, location, texture and injury. A reliable automatic segmentation method from magnetic resonance images could greatly help clinicians to diagnose pathologies, plan therapeutic interventions and predict interventional outcomes while eliminating time consuming manual segmentation. The purpose of this work is three-fold. First, we investigate the feasibility of automatic pathological shoulder muscle segmentation using deep

OBJECTIVE: Rotational forceps and manual rotation followed by direct forceps are techniques used in the management of malposition of the fetal head in the second stage of labor. However, there is widespread debate regarding their relative safety and utility. We aimed to compare the effectiveness and safety of rotational forceps with manual rotation followed by direct forceps, for management of fetal malposition at full dilation.
STUDY DESIGN: A retrospective cohort study in a single tertiary obstetric unit with >6000 births per year. We recorded and analysed outcomes of 104 sequential rotatio

Traumatic spinal cord injury (SCI) may result in tetraplegia (motor and/or sensory nervous system impairment of the arms, trunk and legs) or paraplegia (motor and/or sensory impairment of the trunk and/or legs only). The adverse effects of SCI on health, fitness and functioning are frequently compounded by profoundly sedentary behaviour. People with paraplegia (PP) and tetraplegia (TP) have reduced exercise capacity due to paralysis/paresis and reduced exercising stroke volume. TP often further reduces exercise capacity due to lower maximum heart-rate and respiratory function. There is strong,

STUDY DESIGN: Case-control.
OBJECTIVES: The specific aim of this study was to examine the association between abnormal foot arch postures and a history of shoulder or elbow surgery in baseball pitchers.
BACKGROUND: Pitching a baseball generates forces throughout the musculoskeletal structures of the upper and lower limbs. Structures such as the longitudinal arch of the foot are adaptable to stresses over time. Repeated pitching-related stresses may contribute to acquiring abnormal foot arch postures. Inversely, congenitally abnormal foot arch posture may lead to altered stresses of the upper

BACKGROUND: In the setting of irreparable posterosuperior rotator cuff tears (PSRCTs), lower trapezius transfer (LTT) may be anatomically better positioned for restoring the muscular force couple compared with latissimus dorsi transfer (LDT). The purpose of the study was to evaluate the effect of LTT and LDT on glenohumeral kinematics using a dynamic shoulder model.
METHODS: Ten fresh-frozen cadaveric shoulders (mean age: 56.5 ± 17.2 years) were tested using a dynamic shoulder simulator. The maximum abduction angle (MAA), superior humeral head migration (SHM), and cumulative deltoid forces (C

BACKGROUND: Superior capsular reconstruction (SCR) of the shoulder is an increasingly common procedure in the treatment of patients with massive, irreparable rotator cuff tears lacking significant osteoarthritis. Post-operatively, the appearance of failed grafts has only been described in isolated case reports and review articles.
METHODS: From January 2016 through December 2017, surgical records at a single tertiary-care facility were queried to identify all patients undergoing SCR. Patient records were reviewed for patient demographic information, reason for post-operative MRI, and post-ope

BACKGROUND: Kinesiotaping is widely used for the rehabilitation of rotator cuff tendinopathy. It has been argued to reduce symptoms and functional limitations through improvement of proprioceptive feedback. In addition, kinesiotaping has been reported to increase the subacromial space in healthy subjects. However, its effects on the acromiohumeral distance and shoulder proprioception of individuals with rotator cuff tendinopathy have not been ascertained. This study investigated the immediate effects of kinesiotaping on the acromiohumeral distance and shoulder proprioception in individuals wit

BACKGROUND: Anatomic reduction and stable internal fixation of complex proximal humeral fractures in the elderly is challenging. Secondary displacement, screw perforation, and humeral head necrosis are common complications. The outcome of hemiarthroplasty is unpredictable and strongly dependent on the uncertain healing of the greater tuberosity. This multicenter study retrospectively analyzes the midterm results of primary reverse total shoulder arthroplasty for the treatment of acute, complex fractures of the humerus in an elderly population.
METHODS: Fifty-two shoulders in 51 patients with
