Effects of childhood socioeconomic position on subjective health and health behaviours in adulthood: how much is mediated by adult socioeconomic position?

BACKGROUND: Adult socioeconomic position (SEP) is one of the most frequently hypothesised indirect pathways between childhood SEP and adult health. However, few studies that explore the indirect associations between childhood SEP and adult health systematically investigate the mediating role of multiple individual measures of adult SEP for different health outcomes. We examine the potential mediating role of individual measures of adult SEP in the associations of childhood SEP with self-rated health, self-reported mental health, current smoking status and binge drinking in adulthood. METHODS:

Identifying the impact of social determinants of health on disease rates using correlation analysis of area-based summary information.

OBJECTIVES: We developed a statistical tool that brings together standard, accessible, and well-understood analytic approaches and uses area-based information and other publicly available data to identify social determinants of health (SDH) that significantly affect the morbidity of a specific disease. METHODS: We specified AIDS as the disease of interest and used data from the American Community Survey and the National HIV Surveillance System. Morbidity and socioeconomic variables in the two data systems were linked through geographic areas that can be identified in both systems. Correlation

Psychosocial characteristics of young Norwegian women interested in liposuction, breast augmentation, rhinoplasty, and abdominoplasty: a population-based study.

BACKGROUND: The present study investigated various psychosocial factors expected to predict an interest in liposuction, breast augmentation, rhinoplasty, and abdominoplasty. METHODS: Questionnaire data were obtained from 1862 participants who responded to a survey distributed to a representative sample of 3500 women from northern Norway aged 18 to 35 years. RESULTS: Liposuction was the most popular procedure (25 percent), followed by breast augmentation (15 percent), rhinoplasty (7.0 percent), and abdominoplasty (5.6 percent). Most of the women interested in rhinoplasty and breast augmentati

Coming home: health status and homelessness risk of older pre-release prisoners.

BACKGROUND: Older adults comprise an increasing proportion of the prison and homeless populations. While older age is associated with adverse post-release health events and incarceration is a risk factor for homelessness, the health status and homelessness risk of older pre-release prisoners are unknown. Moreover, most post-release services are geared towards veterans; it is unknown whether the needs of non-veterans differ from those of veterans. OBJECTIVE: To assess health status and risk of homelessness of older pre-release prisoners, and to compare veterans with non-veterans. DESIGN/PARTI

Making the invisible visible: a Photovoice exploration of homeless women's health and lives in central Auckland.

Women and the concept of homelessness are weakly connected in the international discourses on health and housing. This PhotoVoice study gave a sample of homeless women in central Auckland a camera with which to photograph their lives in order to voice their felt health needs as advocates and agents for positive change. Interviews explored the meanings given to street lives captured in the photographs and reveal threats to the women's mental health and worsening addictions. Their tight-knit, resilient community, including dogs, was seen as 'family' who provide support and protection. The women

Migration-related health inequalities: showing the complex interactions between gender, social class and place of origin.

In this paper, we briefly review theories and findings on migration and health from the health equity perspective, and then analyse migration-related health inequalities taking into account gender, social class and migration characteristics in the adult population aged 25-64 living in Catalonia, Spain. On the basis of the characterisation of migration types derived from the review, we distinguished between immigrants from other regions of Spain and those from other countries, and within each group, those from richer or poorer areas; foreign immigrants from low-income countries were also distin

Categorical and dimensional structure of autism spectrum disorders: the nosologic validity of Asperger Syndrome.

There is an ongoing debate whether a differentiation of autistic subtypes, especially between Asperger Syndrome (AS) and high-functioning-autism (HFA) is possible and if so, whether it is a categorical or dimensional one. The aim of this study was to examine the possible clustering of responses in different symptom domains without making any assumption concerning diagnostic appreciation. About 140 children and adolescents, incorporating 52 with a diagnosis of AS, 44 with HFA, 8 with atypical autism and 36 with other diagnoses, were examined. Our study does not support the thesis that autistic

[The intensity of shame in mental disorders].

BACKGROUND: Shame is a self-conscious emotion and mostly experienced in the context of moral and/or normative transgression. Feelings of shame about one's own body and its intimacy must be seen as different from those, which are experienced as a result of negative social evaluations. Feelings of shame have been discussed as being important in the emotional experience of mentally ill persons, although systematic research is missing. METHODS: A scenario-based self-report questionnaire has been constructed, the "Heidelberger Fragebogen zu Schamgefühlen". It consists of two scales, one measuring

Gender, living arrangements, and social circumstances as determinants of entry into and exit from long-term institutional care at older ages: a 6-year follow-up study of older Finns.

PURPOSE: Due to population aging, the need for long-term institutional care is increasing. We study the potentially modifiable sociodemographic factors that affect the rate of entry into and exit from long-term care. DESIGN AND METHODS: A 40% sample from the population registration data of Finns aged 65 and older living in private households at the end of 1997 (n = 280,722) was followed for first entry into (n = 35,926) and subsequent exit -- due to death or return to the community -- from long-term institutional care until the end of 2003. RESULTS: Being female, old, living alone, and of lo

[Access to social networks and health care among extremely poor people].

BACKGROUND: Extremely poor people have more problems to have access to social networks and health care. AIM: To evaluate the access to health services and the perception about these services of adults living in conditions of extreme poverty. MATERIAL AND METHODS: A survey was applied to 361 people living in slums aged 15 to 77 years (83% females), that were living in these conditions for a mean of 11 years. Twenty six in-depth interviews were also performed to prototypical subjects living in extreme poverty. RESULTS: Ten percent of subjects were illiterate. Sixty two percent were unsatisfie

Nutritional status of children with chronic hepatitis B in a population with low socioeconomic status.

OBJECTIVE: Chronic infections and liver diseases may lead to malnutrition. However, growth failure is rarely reported in chronic hepatitis B. We aimed to establish the nutritional status of children with chronic hepatitis B and the relation between anthropometric data and laboratory findings in a population with low socioeconomic status. METHODS: Anthropometrical and laboratory findings were noted from the hospital records. Cases with and without malnutrition were compared with regard to sex, age, histological activity (HAI) scores, aspartate aminotransferase, alanine aminotransferase, gamma-

Different short-term and longitudinal results on perceived health status for asthma and COPD patients after pulmonary rehabilitation. Patients living alone have the largest improvements in perceived quality of life.

A combined sample (n = 132) of asthma (70%, n = 92) and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) (30%, n = 40) patients was assessed for short-term and longitudinal changes in perceived health status (HS), quality of life (QoL), and trait anxiety after a 4-week inpatient pulmonary rehabilitation program (PRP). The total sample improved on HS (P = 0.009 effect size (ES) = 0.12) and QoL (P = 0.011, ES = 0.16) immediately after rehabilitation but improvements diminished at 6 months follow-up. Trait anxiety scores changed very little. The COPD group improved on HS immediately after the rehabil

Health and disease in context: a community-based social medicine curriculum.

Despite the increasing attention paid to the role of social forces in determining health, most physicians finish their training ill-prepared to address these issues. The authors describe their efforts to fill that training gap for internal medicine residents at Oregon Health and Science University through a community-based social medicine curriculum, designed in 2006 in conjunction with community partners at Central City Concern (CCC), an organization addressing homelessness, poverty, and addiction in downtown Portland, Oregon. The challenge was to develop a curriculum that would (1) fit withi

The evolutionary psychology of facial beauty.

What makes a face attractive and why do we have the preferences we do? Emergence of preferences early in development and cross-cultural agreement on attractiveness challenge a long-held view that our preferences reflect arbitrary standards of beauty set by cultures. Averageness, symmetry, and sexual dimorphism are good candidates for biologically based standards of beauty. A critical review and meta-analyses indicate that all three are attractive in both male and female faces and across cultures. Theorists have proposed that face preferences may be adaptations for mate choice because attractiv

Use of home visit and developmental clinic services by high risk Mexican-American and white non-Hispanic infants.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate whether US-born infants of mothers of Mexican descent who were enrolled in Arizona's Newborn Intensive Care Program (NICP) received follow-up services (developmental clinic and community health nurse [(CHN)] home visits) at the rates similar to White non-Hispanic (WNH) infants. Socio-economic and health status characteristics were controlled using stepped regressions in order to assess the impact of each on service use. METHODS: This population-based study used retrospective data from the NICP administrative database that were linked to birth certificates for years 1

Seeking Safety plus Exposure Therapy: an outcome study on dual diagnosis men.

This study arose out of a prominent clinical need: effective treatment for comorbid posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and substance use disorder (SUD) in civilian men. This dual diagnosis is estimated to occur in up to 38% of men in substance abuse treatment, and generally portends a more severe clinical course than SUD alone. Clinical issues include self-harm, suicidality, perpetration of violence against others, and HIV risk behaviors. This study appears to be the first outcome trial to address a sample of civilian men with PTSD and SUD using manualized psychosocial treatment. It evaluate

A systematic review of questionnaires measuring the health of resettling refugee women.

Because many ethnically diverse refugee women resettle in industrialized countries, several biopsychosocial factors need to be considered in caring for them. This systematic review of studies conducted with female refugees, asylum-seekers, or "unspecified" immigrants based on six electronic databases was conducted to determine which questionnaires best measure relevant variables. Questionnaires were reviewed for measurement properties, application of translation theory, and quality of representation. Studies must have included > or = 1 measure of the following: general health; torture, abuse,
