Dark and light adaptation of pineal photoreceptors was studied in the isolated pineal organ of the rainbow trout, Salmo gairdneri. After intracellular recording, the photoreceptors were iontophoretically injected with Lucifer yellow CH or with horseradish peroxidase for morphological characterization. Pineal photoreceptor cells responded to light with a hyperpolarization whose amplitude was graded with intensity. 2-[(3-Pyridinylmethyl)thio]pyrimidine derivatives (1a-n) promote the excretion of phenol red into the mouse trachea, indicating an increased tracheobronchial secretion. Furthermore, 2-[(3-pyridinylmethyl)thio]pyrimidine (1a) (tasuldine) produces greater excretion of phenol red into the mouse trachea after systemic administration than the known bronchosecretolytic ambroxol. We describe a simple, rapid, precise, and sensitive spectrophotometric method for measuring urinary glycosaminoglycan (GAG) sulfate excretion. The GAG sulfates are precipitated with cetylpyridinium chloride, resuspended in water, and mixed with the basic dye 1,9-dimethylmethylene blue to produce a complex with the polyanionic molecule of sulfated GAGs. Clinical photosensitivity reactions have been reported for several non-steroidal antiinflammatory drugs (NSAID). 11 such commercial preparations were studied spectrophotometrically and assayed for phototoxicity using 2 in vitro methods. Photohemolysis of human red blood cells was measured following exposure to longwave (UVA) and medium-wave (UVB) ultraviolet radiation. Plasma fibronectin concentrations were significantly (P less than 0.001) below the reference range in dogs with disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC) secondary to nonlymphomatous neoplasia, acute necrotizing pancreatitis, sepsis, chronic active hepatitis, and heat stroke. The reactions with N,N-diethyldithiocarbamate (DDC) of zinc, cobalt and copper carbonic anhydrase from bovine erythrocytes were investigated. We have tested the characteristics of the method of Iwata and Nishikaze (Clin Chem 25: 1317, 1979). The linearity, sensitivity, and precision are satisfactory and the reactivity of benzethonium chloride with various proteins (albumin, immunoglobulins) is the same.
