Oral manifestations of infantile systemic hyalinosis.

Oral manifestations of infantile systemic hyalinosis in a child of Asian origin are presented. Infantile systemic hyalinosis is a rare fatal condition with probably an autosomal recessive mode of inheritance. The symptoms become apparent soon after birth and death usually occurs before the age of two years. The systemic features are essentially due to widespread deposition of hyaline material in tissues. These include thickening and nodularity of skin, growth failure, joint contractures, osteoporosis, diarrhoea and recurrent infections. The oral changes in the case reported here included thick

Hospitalization of Western Australian children for oral health related conditions: a 5-8 year follow-up.

BACKGROUND: This study investigated in-patient oral health care provision for children under 18 years of age in Western Australia. METHODS: Hospitalizations of children for oral health conditions over a four-year period were analysed using data obtained from the Western Australian Hospital Morbidity Data System (HMDS). This study followed a previously published study examining similar data for 1995. RESULTS: Between 1999-2000 and 2002-2003, a total of 26 497 episodes of care were attributed to oral health conditions among children aged 0-17 years. The cost of this care exceeded $40 million.

The status of dental and jaw bones in children and adolescents after kidney and liver transplantation.

BACKGROUND: Systemic complications in patients after renal or liver transplantation may be localized in the oral cavity. Calcium-phosphate disturbances may affect the structure and metabolism of mandible bones, promote calcification of dental pulp, and in children may cause developmental defects of teeth. The aim of this study was to evaluate the incidence of dental and bone abnormalities in children and adolescents after kidney and liver transplantation with respect to the type of the transplanted organ and maintenance immunosuppression. MATERIAL/METHODS: Overall, 23 kidney and 25 liver reci

Autosomal ichthyosis with hypotrichosis syndrome displays low matriptase proteolytic activity and is phenocopied in ST14 hypomorphic mice.

Human autosomal recessive ichthyosis with hypotrichosis (ARIH) is an inherited disorder recently linked to homozygosity for a point mutation in the ST14 gene that causes a G827R mutation in the matriptase serine protease domain (G216 in chymotrypsin numbering). Here we show that human G827R matriptase has strongly reduced proteolytic activity toward small molecule substrates, as well as toward its candidate epidermal target, prostasin. To further investigate the possible contribution of low matriptase activity to ARIH, we generated an ST14 hypomorphic mouse strain that displays a 100-fold redu

Osteonecrosis of the jaws associated with the use of bisphosphonates: a review of 63 cases.

PURPOSE: Bisphosphonates are widely used in the management of metastatic disease to the bone and in the treatment of osteoporosis. We were struck in the past 3 years with a cluster of patients with necrotic lesions in the jaw who shared 1 common clinical feature, that they had all received chronic bisphosphonate therapy. The necrosis that was detected was otherwise typical of osteoradionecrosis, an entity that we rarely encountered at our center, with less than 2 patients presenting with a similar manifestation per year. PATIENTS AND METHODS: We performed a retrospective chart review of patie

Aneurysmal bone cysts of the maxilla: a clinicopathologic review.

PURPOSE: This study evaluated the significant differences in clinicopathologic features of aneurysmal bone cyst in the maxilla and mandible. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A search of the literature showed 30 recorded maxillary cases, and these together with one previously unrecorded case formed the basis of the study. RESULTS: There were no differences in the age and sex incidence. Only two patients complained of pain, and no patient complained of tenderness. No patient gave a history of trauma. Swelling was present in virtually every patient. In seven cases, there was tooth mobility or migration o

Caveats in the Established Understanding of CMT1A.

Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease type-1A (CMT1A) is one of the most common types of inherited peripheral nerve diseases. It is caused by the trisomy of chromosome 17p12 (c17p12), a large DNA segment of 1.4 Mb containing PMP22 plus eight other genes. The size of c17p12 is formidable for any cloning technique to manipulate, and thus precludes production of models in vitro and in vivo that can precisely recapitulate the genetic alterations in humans with CMT1A. This limitation and other factors have led to several assumptions, which have yet been carefully scrutinized, serving as key principles in our

Association of Herpes Viruses with Mild, Moderate and Severe Chronic Periodontitis.

INTRODUCTION: Periodontal disease is an inflammatory condition of the supporting tissues of the teeth. It is a multi-factorial and multi-etiological infectious disease process. Recent evidences shows that human herpes viruses could be putative pathogens. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the association of Herpes viruses especially Herpes simplex viruses (HSV-1 and 2), Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) and Human cytomegalovirus (HCMV) in patients with chronic periodontitis. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 75 patients with periodontitis were included in the study (25 each with mild, modera

Periodontal disease and NIDDM in Pima Indians.

The goal of this study was to determine the prevalence and incidence of periodontal disease and its relationship with non-insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus (NIDDM). Two thousand two hundred seventy-three Pima Indians (949 men, 1324 women) aged greater than or equal to 15 yr from the Gila River Indian Community in Arizona were examined between 1983 and 1989. Periodontal disease was diagnosed by tooth loss and by percentage of interproximal crestal alveolar bone loss ascertained from panoramic radiography. Subjects with little or no evidence of periodontal disease were classified as nondisease

Molecular, cellular, and clinical aspects of myofibrillar myopathy caused by HSPB8 frameshift mutations.

HSPB8 belongs to the small heat shock protein family, which comprises ten chaperones with molecular weights below 29 kDa. HSPB8 is broadly expressed across human tissues, with the highest levels in skeletal muscles, the cardiac muscle, and the nervous system. In muscles, HSPB8 plays a crucial role in chaperone-assisted selective autophagy (CASA), contributing to protein quality control and maintaining proteostasis. The most extensively studied mutations affecting the HSPB8 K141 codon are associated with autosomal dominant neuromuscular disorders such as Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease type 2L and

Aggressive Mandibular Squamous Cell Carcinoma Mimicking Periodontal Disease in a Non-Transplanted Patient With Fanconi Anemia.

BACKGROUND: Fanconi anemia (FA) is associated with markedly increased risk for early-onset oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC). METHODS: We report an aggressive mandibular squamous cell carcinoma in a 26-year-old non-transplanted woman with FA initially interpreted as localized periodontal disease adjacent to a tongue leukoplakia. RESULTS: Initial examination demonstrated mild gingival inflammation and localized alveolar bone loss involving the right mandibular molars. Forty-five days later, the patient returned with facial asymmetry, severe bone destruction, and grade III tooth mobility. Co

Streptococcus mutans and Cariogenic Biofilms: Mechanisms, Disruption Strategies, and Future Therapeutic Directions.

Dental caries, a significant global health concern, is intricately linked to the development and persistence of cariogenic biofilms on tooth surfaces. These complex microbial ecosystems orchestrate a multifactorial process of decay, adhering to teeth, producing acids that erode enamel, and exhibiting resistance to traditional therapies. This review delves into the intricate mechanisms of cariogenic biofilm formation and pathogenesis, exploring adhesion, acid production, extracellular polymeric substance (EPS) mediated acid tolerance, and nutrient acquisition within the biofilm. We then explore

An antioxidant and antibacterial octyl gallate sustained-release ointment for periodontitis treatment.

Periodontitis is a chronic inflammatory disease that leads to periodontal attachment loss and is a major cause of adult tooth loss. Current treatment of mechanical debridement is often ineffective in deep periodontal pockets, and antibiotic adjuncts carry the risk of bacterial resistance. Octyl gallate (OG), a natural plant-derived compound with antibacterial and antioxidant properties, is limited by poor water solubility and stability. This study aimed to develop a sustained-release ointment (OG-Ointment) using Pluronic F127 and ethylcellulose to enhance the delivery and efficacy of OG. The f

[Important medical-odontological interactions. Diabetes mellitus and oral health. A bittersweet relation?].

Diabetes mellitus is a metabolic disease characterized by abnormalities in the regulation of blood glucose levels. Average blood glucose levels over a longer period of time (2-3 months) can be assessed by measuring the HbA1c levels. Glycated hemoglobin is determined with the HbA1c levels. An HbA1c of over 7% may lead to serious general health complications, particularly when it is not or cannot be well regulated. Elevated blood glucose levels may also lead to oral health complications. Epidemiological studies have shown that periodontitis, salivary disorders, dental caries, tooth loss, edentul
