Novel use of continuous pericapsular nerve group (PENG) block technique for traumatic superior and inferior pubic rami fractures: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Pubic rami fractures are painful injuries more commonly seen in the elderly with osteoporosis after high velocity trauma. In the most cases, management is conservative and non-operative with the goal to provide optimal pain relief to facilitate early mobilization and hospital discharge. Unfortunately, opioids remain the mainstay analgesic option and regional anesthesia techniques are limited but may include lumbar epidural anesthesia. CASE PRESENTATION: A female patient in her 80s presented to the emergency department of a level 1 trauma center following a high-speed motor vehicle

Medical and surgical management of lower extremity war-related injuries. Experience of the French Military Health Service (FMHS).

Lower extremity war wounds are characterized by high-energy trauma occasioning loss of complex and pluritissular substances. The support pipeline put into place by the French defense health service (SSA) is designed to rapidly evacuate the injured person from the scene of injury to mainland France, following initial surgery in the framework of a sequential tactic known as "Damage Control Surgery". This strategy is aimed at stabilizing the traumatized individual and enabling his evacuation. Patients are subsequently treated in a restorative surgery unit in a Hôpital d'Instruction des Armées (HI

A Promising Approach in Home Visiting to Support Families Affected by Maternal Substance Use.

INTRODUCTION: Many factors influence women's use of alcohol and other drugs while pregnant and postpartum. Substance use impacts the maternal-child relationship during the critical neonatal period. The first days and months of human development lay the foundation for health and well-being across the lifespan, making this period an important window of opportunity to interrupt the transmission of trauma and stress to the next generation. Pregnant and postpartum women with a history of substance use require specialized support services. METHODS: The Team for Infants Exposed to Substance abuse (T

Barely benign: The dangers of BB and other nonpowder guns.

OBJECTIVE: To characterize the risks of nonpowder guns commonly used by children for recreation. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective review of children ≤18 years of age treated for nonpowder gun injuries at a pediatric level I trauma center during 2013-2017. Demographics, injury characteristics, treatments, and outcomes were reviewed and analyzed using descriptive statistics. RESULTS: Forty-six cases were identified; of these, 78% were male and the median age was 10 years (IQR 7-13). All guns were either ball-bearing or pellet guns. Eighty-five percent (38/46) of injuries were penetrating.

Past Experiences of Getting Bullied and Assaulted and Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) After a Severe Traumatic Event in Adulthood: A Study of World Trade Center (WTC) Responders.

Although experiencing bullying and other forms of assault is associated with adverse physical, emotional, and psychological consequences, the long-term consequences, especially in the aftermath of a severe trauma in adulthood, is not known. This study examined the relationship between history of being bullied and/or assaulted and posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms among responders to the World Trade Center (WTC) disaster. During 2015-16, a modified life events checklist was administered to responders at Stony Brook WTC Health Program. WTC-related PTSD symptoms were assessed by PTSD

An Unusual Cause of Buttock Pain after Posterior Thoracolumbar Fixation: Rod Migration into the Pelvis.

INTRODUCTION: Posterior surgical stabilization is commonly indicated for unstable thoracolumbar fractures. Short segment stabilization has the advantage of preserving mobile segments and reducing excessive loads on the adjacent discs but is not without complications. Rod migration is an extremely rare complication after thoracolumbar fracture fixation and can lead to catastrophic visceral and vascular injuries. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first case report of a surgically managed distant rod migration into the posterior sacrum and pelvis after a posterior thoracolumbar trauma fix

Testing gender-differentiated models of the mechanisms linking polyvictimization and youth offending: Numbing and callousness versus dissociation and borderline traits.

The increasing prevalence of girls in the juvenile justice system suggests the importance of examining whether models of adolescent offending are differentiated by gender. Polyvictimization has emerged as a robust predictor of youth justice involvement, especially for girls, and research exploring mechanisms underlying the link between polyvictimization and offending suggests further gender differences in that callous-unemotional (CU) traits have been implicated in samples of boys whereas borderline personality (BP) traits have been implicated amongst girls. However, a limitation of these stud

Avoidance symptoms and delayed verbal memory are associated with post-traumatic stress symptoms in female victims of sexual violence.

BACKGROUND: Victimization by sexual violence is strongly associated with the development of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). While several psychological and cognitive factors are known to be associated with PTSD prognosis, multivariable analysis is scarce. This study examined factors affecting the severity of PTSD symptoms in early stage of traumatic experience of sexual violence, including initial post-traumatic symptoms and cognitive characteristics. METHODS: Participants were recruited from the center for women and children victims of violence in a university hospital. Thirty-four sex
