Hepatitis A outbreak in HIV-infected patients in Southeastern France: questions and responses?

During the 2017 European hepatitis A (HA) outbreak we assessed HA incidence in our cohort of 2300 HIV-infected patients, implemented preventive measures and evaluated practices and knowledge on sexually transmitted diseases (STD). HA incidence was assessed between 1 January 2017 and 31 December 2017 and included all symptomatic patients with virologically confirmed HA. Preventive measures consisted in identifying at risk and not immunised patients to propose them a free HAV vaccination, and an anonymous survey related to transmission routes of STD and to sexual behaviours. Twenty HA were diagn

Patients with tuberculous meningitis and hepatitis B co-infection have increased risk for antituberculosis drug-induced liver injury and poor outcomes.

BACKGROUND: Tuberculous meningitis (TBM) is one of the most severe forms of tuberculosis. Previous studies reported that hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection could increase the risk of antituberculosis drug-induced liver injury (ATB-DILI) in pulmonary tuberculosis patients. To date, only a few studies exist on the effect of HBV on TBM. METHODS: This inpatient study retrospectively analyzed the medical records of patients who were diagnosed with TBM between June 2002 and June 2018. Statistical analysis was used to reveal the difference between the HBV and non-HBV groups. Univariate analysis and m

Contribution of Congenital Cytomegalovirus Infection to Permanent Hearing Loss in a Highly Seropositive Population: The Brazilian Cytomegalovirus Hearing and Maternal Secondary Infection Study.

BACKGROUND: The exact contribution of congenital cytomegalovirus infection (cCMVI) to permanent hearing loss (HL) in highly seropositive populations is unknown. We determined the contribution of cCMVI to HL and estimated the effectiveness of newborn hearing screening (HS) in identifying neonates with CMV-related HL. METHODS: A total of 11 900 neonates born from a population with ≥97% maternal seroprevalence were screened for cCMVI and HL. cCMVI was confirmed by detection of CMV-DNA in saliva and urine at age <3 weeks. RESULTS: Overall, 68 (0.6%; 95% confidence interval [CI], 0.4-0.7) neonate

Hepatitis C virus modulates IgG glycosylation in HIV co-infected antiretroviral therapy suppressed individuals.

OBJECTIVE: Glycosylation plays a critical role in mediating several antibody (mainly immunoglobulin G; IgG) immunological functions, including antibody-dependent cell-mediated cytotoxicity (ADCC), and anti-inflammatory activities. We investigated whether IgG glycosylation and immune profile patterns are differentially modulated in mono and dual infection using samples from untreated hepatitis C virus (HCV)-infected individuals with and without co-infection with antiretroviral therapy (ART)-suppressed HIV. DESIGN: IgG glycosylation, immune subsets, natural killer cell function, and liver enzym

[Jungle yellow fever with positive serology for leptospira in a young peruvian male].

Yellow fever (YF) and leptospirosis are under-diagnosed endemic zoonoses of the tropical regions of Africa and South America. Both may be clinically indistinguishable and present as an acute icterohemorrhagic febrile syndrome. We report the case of a 20-year-old male from the department of Amazonas who presented with nine days of disease characterized by multiorgan failure (neurological, renal, hepatic, respiratory, and hematological involvement). He received antibiotic treatment, as well as, transfusion, dialysis, hemodynamic, and ventilatory support. Despite the severity of the clinical cond

An Inflammatory Story: Antibodies in Tuberculosis Comorbidities.

Mycobacterium tuberculosis (Mtb) resides in a quarter of the world's population and is the causative agent for tuberculosis (TB), the most common infectious reason of death in humans today. Although cellular immunity has been firmly established in the control of Mtb, there is growing evidence that antibodies may also modulate the infection. More specifically, certain antibody features are associated with inflammation and are divergent in different states of human infection and disease. Importantly, TB impacts not just the healthy but also those with chronic conditions. While HIV represents the

Recent autochthonous cases of leishmaniasis in residents of the Republic of Dagestan, Russian Federation.

Eighty years after the last published record of human leishmaniasis from Dagestan, Russian Federation, we report two recent cases which were most probably acquired locally: one case of visceral leishmaniasis in a 2-year old child, and one cutaneous leishmaniasis case in a 39-year-old man co-infected with HIV, both resident in Dagestan.

[Research progress of hepatitis B and C virus co-infection].

Hepatitis B virus (HBV)/hepatitis C virus (HCV) co-infection shares the same transmission routes, and thereby it is not rare in regions where the prevalence of HBV and HCV is high. However, the co-infection rates of HBV/HCV reported in different regions of the world are relatively dissimilar, and the co-infection rates of HBV/HCV in the population are unidentified due to the presence of silent HBV infection. Thus, the phenomenon of underestimation exists. HCV may have an inhibitory effect on HBV replication when HBV/HCV is co-infected, and the effect of HBV on HCV replication remains to be cer

Comparison of mono- and co-infection by swine influenza A viruses and porcine respiratory coronavirus in porcine precision-cut lung slices.

Coronaviruses as well as influenza A viruses are widely spread in pig fattening and can cause high economical loss. Here we infected porcine precision-cut lung slices with porcine respiratory coronavirus and two Influenza A viruses to analyze if co-infection with these viruses may enhance disease outcome in swine. Ciliary activity of the epithelial cells in the bronchus of precision-cut lung slices was measured. Co-infection of PCLS reduced virulence of both virus species compared to mono-infection. Similar results were obtained by mono- and co-infection experiments on a porcine respiratory ce

Multiple HIV-1/M + HIV-1/O dual infections and new HIV-1/MO inter-group recombinant forms detected in Cameroon.

BACKGROUND: Due to the prevalence of HIV-1 group M and the endemicity of HIV-1 group O infections in Cameroon, patients may be infected with both viruses and/or with HIV-1/MO recombinant forms. Such atypical infections may be deleterious in terms of diagnosis and therapeutic management due to the high divergence of HIV-1/O. The aim of this study was to identify prospectively such atypical infections in Cameroon. RESULTS: Based on serological screening by env-V3 serotyping and a molecular strategy using group-specific (RT)-PCRs, we identified 10 Cameroonian patients harboring three different p

Decreased pro-inflammatory immune responses during recurrent acute HCV infections in HIV co-infected patients.

Patients in high-risk groups continue to transmit the hepatitis C virus (HCV) and frequently experience reinfections. Since little is known regarding the immune response to HCV during reinfection, we compared primary and consecutive acute HCV infections in patients with an HIV infection, and focused on the cytokine bridging innate to adaptive immunity. We observed that the serum levels of IL-12p40, MIP-1β, MIG and IP-10 increased during primary acute HCV infection, but not during subsequent secondary acute reinfections. The weaker pro-inflammatory cytokine responses observed during HCV reinfec

Isolation and identification of bacterial populations of zoonotic importance from captive non-venomous snakes in Malaysia.

AIM: Captivity of non-venomous snakes such as python and boa are common in zoos, aquariums and as pets in households. Poor captivity conditions expose these reptiles to numerous pathogens which may result in disease conditions. The purpose of this study was to investigate the common bacteria isolated from necropsied captive snakes in Malaysia over a five year period. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 27 snake carcasses presented for necropsy at the Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) were used in this survey. Samples were aseptically obtained at necropsy from different organs/tissues (lung, liver
