A 70-year-old man underwent surveillance colonoscopy following surgery for occlusive sigmoid colon cancer. The procedure revealed nine sessile serrated lesions (SSLs), including three inverted lesions. Endoscopic and surgical resections were performed. All nine lesions were confirmed pathologically as SSL, and the patient was diagnosed with serrated polyposis syndrome (SPS). Three inverted SSLs (iSSLs) showed endophytic growth without epithelial misplacement. Crypt analysis revealed that iSSL crypts were wider at the bottom than the opening, roughly resembling a frustoconical shape. Our result

Appendix epiploica (AE) in an incarcerated inguinal hernia sac is very rare. We herein report the case of a 57-year-old man admitted to the emergency department with complaints of nausea, swelling, and pain in the left inguinal area. He was diagnosed with left incarcerated inguinal hernia and treated laparoscopically with transabdominal preperitoneal (TAPP) mesh hernioplasty. During the operation, AE, lodged in the direct hernia sac, was seen to originate from the sigmoid colon. The narrow internal inguinal ring was incised at the 2 o'clock position using a monopolar hook, and the hypertrophic

Buerger's disease is a type of vasculitis that predominantly affects small to medium arteries and the veins of the upper and lower extremities. Intestinal vessels are rarely involved. This is a case report of a 38-year-old male, smoker, with known Buerger's disease who was found to have ischemic colitis of the sigmoid colon on biopsy and inferior mesenteric artery occlusion on computed tomography (CT) angiography. Intestinal ischemia is a rare complication in Buerger's disease. Patients may present with vague abdominal symptoms. Given the very low incidence of intestinal involvement, social hi

Isolated neurofibromas that affect the gastrointestinal tract are rare and almost always manifest as neurofibromatosis type 1 or multiple endocrine neoplasia type 2b. In this paper, we present a case of a 24-year-old female with abdominal pain who discharged a neurofibroma in her stool without any blood on it. A colonoscopy showed multiple small polyps in the sigmoid colon and a nodule in the ileocecus. The pathology results and the immunohistochemical stains of the removed neoplasm from the ileocecus confirmed the diagnosis was a bowel neurofibroma. We report a rare case of ileocecal neurofib

INTRODUCTION: Sigmoid colon volvulus (SV) represents the most common etiology of antepartum gastrointestinal obstruction, with repetitive antepartum episodes rarely reported.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 25-year-old multiparous patient with history of SV at 26 weeks in her previous pregnancy presented with recurrent episodes of SV at 32 0/7, 32 4/7, 37 0/7, and 38 1/7 weeks successfully managed with colonoscopic decompression. Labor was successfully induced at 38 4/7 weeks, and she experienced two further episodes on postpartum days #1 and #32 also treated with colonoscopic decompression, followed by

Gastrointestinal involvement is a rare complication of toxic epidermal necrolysis syndrome (TENS) that results in sloughing of the intestinal epithelium. Prior case reports have noted the potential susceptibility of the entire gastrointestinal tract, from oropharynx and esophagus to sigmoid colon and rectum. Given its infrequency, the effect of gastrointestinal involvement on the treatment and prognosis of TENS is poorly understood. Here, the authors report a case of gastrointestinal symptoms in a patient diagnosed with toxic epidermal necrolysis, likely representing gastrointestinal involveme

A 75-year-old man tested positive for occult blood in the stool. A subsequent examination indicated concurrent locally advanced cancer (cT3) at the hepatic flexure and lower rectum cancer in the external anal sphincter. Because of the locally advanced rectal cancer (cT4), preoperative chemoradiotherapy was administered. First, laparoscopic right hemicolectomy and colostomy were performed at the sigmoid colon. Chemoradiotherapy for rectal cancer was initiated on day 18 after the surgeries. Seven weeks after chemoradiotherapy had been completed, laparoscopic abdominoperineal resection and right

A 55-year-old woman underwent low anterior resection for sigmoid colon cancer with multiple bilobar metastases. She then received 23 courses of Leucovorin, fluorouracil, and oxaliplatin (mFOLFOX) plus bevacizumab and 13 courses of Leucovorin, fluorouracil, and irinotecan (FOLFIRI) plus bevacizumab as down staging chemotherapy. A two-stage hepatectomy was planned to avoid the risk of hepatic failure due to radial resection of bilobar metastases. Therefore, a right lobectomy was performed, and curative resection was achieved 54 days after the first hepatectomy. Two-stage hepatectomy as well as a

Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) is responsible for numerous infectious processes. Gastrointestinal tract involvement is rather rare and only a handful of cases of MRSA colitis have been reported in North America. We present a case of MRSA colitis in an adult without apparent risk factors. Abdominal computed tomography (CT) showed thickening of the sigmoid colon, indicative of colitis, and empiric therapy with ciprofloxacin and metronidazole was started. Initial work-up for infection-including blood and stool cultures, and stool Clostridium difficile toxin assay-was negative.

Colovesical fistula is a relatively rare condition that is primarily related to diverticular disease. There are few reports of colovesical fistula after renal transplantation. We report of a 53-year-old man who was diagnosed with colovesical fistula after recurrent urinary tract infection, 5 months after undergoing cadaveric renal transplantation. Laparoscopic partial resection of the sigmoid colon with the use of the Hartmann procedure was performed. Six months after that surgery, there was no evidence of recurrent urinary tract infection and the patient's renal graft function was preserved.

Endometriosis is a benign disease defined by the presence of endometrial glands and stroma outside of the uterus and is associated with both pelvic pain and infertility. The most common sites of endometriosis, in decreasing order of frequency, are the ovaries, anterior and posterior cul-de-sac, posterior broad ligaments, uterosacral ligaments, uterus, fallopian tubes, sigmoid colon, appendix, and round ligaments. The main treatment is surgical, but often-microscopic islands of endometrial tissue remain, which proliferate and are responsible for relapses. We tested the efficacy of two drugs (Me

We report a case of a 30-year-old woman with an intrauterine device (IUD) improperly inserted deep within the myometrium, with a muscularis layer injury of the recto-sigmoid colon resulting of a uterine perforation and presented as abdomino-pelvic pain and dyspareunia. The ultrasonographic control of the IUD after the insertion (performed seven months before) was not checked. Cervical examination showed the strings of the IUD. The ultrasonographic exploration identified an intra-myometrial IUD with fundus perforation of the uterus. A laparoscopic exploration permitting the removal of the IUD r

An unknown number of patients have had male to female gender transformation. Various surgical techniques have been employed to construct the neovagina. The more traditional techniques include inverted penile grafts and vascular pedicle grafts, but also the small bowel and sigmoid colon have been used. In this case, the authors present a patient who previously had a gender transformation from male to female with use of bowel for the neovagina. The patient presented with severe abdominal pain, fever and leukocytosis. A CT scan revealed retroperitoneal free air, and an x-ray examination with cont

A 68-year-old immunosuppressed woman was admitted with poor-functioning colostomy, which she had following a Hartmann's procedure for diverticular disease in sigmoid colon 8 years previously. She was on cyclosporin and warfarin for transplanted kidney and atrial fibrillation, respectively. On admission, an erythematous and tender swelling was found around the stoma, which was diagnosed as an irreducible, parastomal hernia clinically. The swelling was investigated further with CT, which revealed an organised mesocolic abscess of diverticular origin. The abscess was drained percutaneously under

A 68-year-old man visited our department because of diarrhea and bloody stools. Colonoscopy revealed diverticula scattered in the sigmoid colon with localized mucosal edema and reddening. The mucosa became somewhat rough 9 months later, and had an erosive, ulcerative colitis (UC)-like appearance after a further 6 months, with these changes extending to the rectum. These findings led to a diagnosis of diverticular colitis (DC) with UC-like changes. The condition was refractory to treatment including drug therapy and was thus surgically treated. No cases of DC have been reported in Japan, and a

Metachronous multiple carcinomas at the site of a stoma is a rare condition after surgery. A 67-year-old man with a second tumor at the stoma site 15 years after abdominoperineal resection for rectal carcinoma is reported herein with a review of the Japanese literature. The patient visited our hospital 20 years after initial surgery, presenting with constipation and increasing tumor size in the stoma. A biopsy specimen of the tumor revealed adenocarcinoma. Block resection of the sigmoid colon and colostomy with the adjacent abdominal wall was performed. Histopathological examination showed a w

Ileosigmoid knotting, also known as compound volvulus or double volvulus, is a rare cause of intestinal obstruction. In this condition the ileum wraps around the base of the sigmoid colon and forms a knot. Ileosigmoid knotting is an unusual entity in the West, but is comparatively common in certain African, Asian and Middle Eastern nations. The condition is serious, generally progressing rapidly to gangrene. Awareness of the condition is essential for prompt diagnosis and optimal management. This report describes a case in a 60-year-old male and describes the management of this rare condition.

A 29-year-old man was admitted with abdominal pain. Peritonitis symptoms appeared on the day after of hospitalization and emeregency surgery was performed. A Meckel diverticulum adhered to the mesenterium of the sigmoid colon which was strangulated for a length of 30cm. Additionally, a second Meckel diverticulum was present on the oral side of the first one. The length of these were 3cm and 5cm, and the longer one caused the strangulation. The letter diverticulum contained a crab shell about 2cm in size, which was considered to be the cause of adhesion. Our search of the literature revealed on

The development of cutaneous metastases in the context of colorectal cancer is exceptional, especially in the absence of visceral lesions. We present the case of a 50-year-old woman who underwent surgery for a T3N0M0 tumor in the sigmoid colon, with resection of ovarian metastases at 12 months. Reoperation was performed 14 months later for local anastomotic recurrence. Four months after surgery, a nodular ulcerated lesion was observed in the perineum due to metastases from adenocarcinoma. Aggressive local surgery was performed and the patient has presented no recurrences after a 5-year follow-

Mesenteric inflammatory veno-occlusive disease is a rare but recognized cause of intestinal ischemia, who can be defined as phlebitis or venulitis affecting mesentery or the bowel, without any evidence of coexisting of an obvious predisposing cause or a coexisting arterial inflammatory involvement. We report the case of a male patient, 63 year old, admitted in the Emergency County Hospital of Craiova, who after presenting with an acute abdomen, underwent exploratory laparotomy and resection of the ischemic sigmoid, temporary colostomy and after four months we reintroduced descendent colon in t
