The neuroscience of transformers.

Neuroscience has long informed the development of artificial neural networks, but the success of modern architectures invites, in turn, the converse: can modern networks teach us lessons about brain function? Here, we examine the structure of the cortical column and propose that the transformer provides a natural computational analogy for multiple elements of cortical microcircuit organization. Rather than claiming a literal implementation of transformer equations in cortex, we develop a hypothetical mapping between transformer operations and laminar cortical features, using the analogy as an

Multicenter real world validation of on device single lead ECG parameters for remote cardiac assessment.

Accurate and continuous electrocardiogram (ECG) parameter measurement outside hospital environments is essential for real-time cardiac health monitoring and telemedicine, yet comprehensive validation of on-device computational methods across heterogeneous real-world populations remains limited. We conducted a real-world validation using two datasets: HeartVoice-ECG-lite (369 participants with single-lead ECG recordings annotated by two cardiologists) and PTB-XL/PTB-XL+ (21,354 patients with 12-lead ECG recordings and diagnostic annotations). Computational vaccine development against protozoa.

Protozoan parasites remain a major global health and economic burden, particularly in low- and middle-income countries. Conventional strategies such as chemotherapy and vector control face growing limitations due to resistance, toxicity, and implementation challenges. Vaccination represents a sustainable solution, but the complexity of protozoan life cycles and antigenic diversity has hindered vaccine development. Computational vaccinology offers innovative tools to overcome these barriers, combining immuno-informatics, reverse vaccinology, and artificial intelligence to accelerate the identif

Fast and Accurate Ring Strain Energy Predictions with Machine Learning and Application in Strain-Promoted Reactions.

Ring strain energy (RSE) is crucial for understanding molecular reactivity, with broad implications in polymerization, click chemistry, drug discovery and beyond. However, quantitatively determining RSE through experiments or quantum mechanics (QM) is resource-intensive, limiting its application on a large scale. We present a machine learning (ML)-based workflow that enables the reliable and efficient prediction of RSE, entirely bypassing traditional QM calculations. Our workflow employs AIMNet2 machine learning interatomic potentials and Auto3D for the identification of low-energy conformers

Efficient Free Energies from a Simplified Electrostatic Embedding QM/MM Approach Based on Electrostatic Potential Fitted Operators.

Periodic boundary condition (PBC)-adapted formulations of quantum mechanics/molecular mechanics (QM/MM) methods allow for the accurate computation of free energies, provided there is sufficient phase-space sampling. In this work, we develop a robust and efficient QM/MM approach based on electrostatic potential fitted (ESPF) charge operators. The method combines smooth particle-mesh Ewald summation to describe QM-MM electrostatic interactions and the Ewald pair potential to treat long-range QM-QM interactions. It is fully compatible with both ab initio DFT and semiempirical DFTB QM/MM framework

High-accuracy spinal alignment monitoring using the head angle and visual distance in computer users.

STUDY DESIGN: A Prospective Validation Study. OBJECTIVES: To validate a novel, noninvasive method for estimating the spinal sagittal alignment during seated computer work, using the head angle (HA) and visual distance (VD) as primary parameters. METHODS: A 3D motion analysis system measured HA and VD in 21 healthy volunteers. The relationship between these parameters and spinal sagittal alignment, as determined by body surface markers, was investigated. To validate this method, radiographic measurements were taken in a separate group of 32 patients to confirm the link between body surface la

Advancements in flow measurement techniques within cerebrovascular neurosurgery.

PURPOSE: The cerebral vasculature operates as a highly dynamic system that actively regulates blood flow to maintain the brain's physiological equilibrium while providing essential support for its functions. Therefore, enhancing our understanding of how cerebral blood flow is controlled, modified, or adapts in the presence of specific pathologies-such as stroke, Moyamoya disease, arteriovenous malformations (AVMs), or aneurysms-is critical for accurately evaluating the effects of these conditions and for developing effective therapeutic strategies for patients. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A compre

Unveiling breast cancer metastasis through an advanced X-ray imaging approach.

Breast cancer is a significant global health burden, causing a substantial number of deaths. Systemic metastatic tumour cell dissemination is a major cause of poor outcomes. Understanding the mechanisms underlying metastasis is crucial for effective interventions. Changes in the extracellular matrix play a pivotal role in breast cancer metastasis. In this work, we present an advanced multimodal X-ray computed tomography, by combining Small-angle X-ray Scattering Tensor Tomography (SAXS-TT) and X-ray Fluorescence Computed Tomography (XRF-CT). This approach likely brings out valuable information

Semi-Automated Virtual Endoscopy of the Frontal Recess.

INTRODUCTION: Virtual endoscopy (VE) is the computer-based reprocessing of diagnostic imaging to simulate endoscopy of an anatomic region of interest. VE of the Frontal Sinus Outflow Tract (FSOT) may assist surgical planning and education. METHOD: VE was performed on 16 normal sinus computed tomography (CT) scans for a total of 32 sides using the "path-to-target" tool on the TruDi surgical navigation system (ver. 2.3; Acclarent, Irving, CA, USA). To aid orientation during VE, planning points were placed on the middle turbinate, ethmoidal bulla, and skull base. The VE representation of anatomy

A Computer Interface Controlled by Upper Limb Muscles: Effects of a Two Weeks Training on Younger and Older Adults.

As the population worldwide ages, there is a growing need for assistive technology and effective human-machine interfaces to address the wider range of motor disabilities that older adults may experience. Motor disabilities can make it difficult for individuals to perform basic daily tasks, such as getting dressed, preparing meals, or using a computer. The goal of this study was to investigate the effect of two weeks of training with a myoelectric computer interface (MCI) on motor functions in younger and older adults. Twenty people were recruited in the study: thirteen younger (range: 22-35 y

[Artificial neural networks as a psychiatric instrument].

BACKGROUND: Artificial intelligence (AI) has evolved enormously over the past decade and is increasingly being applied to a range of domains, including psychiatry. AI encompasses several modalities, including artificial neural networks (ANNs), referring to computer models partly based on the workings of the brain. ANNs have existed since the ’50s, but only became ‘mainstream’ since the 2010s. The fact that they are inspired by the workings of the brain raises the question of whether they can also be used to model the (dys)functioning of the brain. This question led to the adv

Is there evidence for a noisy computation deficit in developmental dyslexia?

The noisy computation hypothesis of developmental dyslexia (DD) is particularly appealing because it can explain deficits across a variety of domains, such as temporal, auditory, phonological, visual and attentional processes. A key prediction is that noisy computations lead to more variable and less stable word representations. A way to test this hypothesis is through repetition of words, that is, when there is noise in the system, the neural signature of repeated stimuli should be more variable. The hypothesis was tested in an functional magnetic resonance imaging experiment with dyslexic an

Experimental and Theoretical Study on Theobromine Solubility Enhancement in Binary Aqueous Solutions and Ternary Designed Solvents.

The solubility of theobromine was studied both experimentally and theoretically. The solubility was determined spectrophotometrically at 25 °C in neat organic solvents, aqueous binary mixtures, Natural Deep Eutectic Solvents (NADES) and ternary NADES mixtures with water. It was found that addition of water in unimolar proportions with some organic solvents increases theobromine solubility compared to neat solvents. Additionally, using NADES results in a solubility increase of the studied compound not only in relation to water but also DMSO. The addition of water (0.2 molar fraction) to NADES i

Mapping gradient nonlinearity and miscalibration using diffusion-weighted MR images of a uniform isotropic phantom.

PURPOSE: To use diffusion measurements to map the spatial dependence of the magnetic field produced by the gradient coils of an MRI scanner with sufficient accuracy to correct errors in quantitative diffusion MRI (DMRI) caused by gradient nonlinearity and gradient amplifier miscalibration. THEORY AND METHODS: The field produced by the gradient coils is expanded in regular solid harmonics. The expansion coefficients are found by fitting a model to a minimum set of diffusion-weighted images of an isotropic diffusion phantom. The accuracy of the resulting gradient coil field maps is evaluated by

Impaired Learning From Negative Feedback in Stimulant Use Disorder: Dopaminergic Modulation.

BACKGROUND: Drug-induced alterations to the dopamine system in stimulant use disorder (SUD) are hypothesized to impair reinforcement learning (RL). Computational modeling enables the investigation of the latent processes of RL in SUD patients, which could elucidate the nature of their impairments. METHODS: We investigated RL in 44 SUD patients and 41 healthy control participants using a probabilistic RL task that assesses learning from reward and punishment separately. In an independent sample, we determined the modulatory role of dopamine in RL following a single dose of the dopamine D2/3 re

Biomechanical Investigation of Disturbed Hemodynamics-Induced Tissue Degeneration in Abdominal Aortic Aneurysms Using Computational and Experimental Techniques.

Abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) is the dilatation of the aorta beyond 50% of the normal vessel diameter. It is reported that 4-8% of men and 0.5-1% of women above 50 years of age bear an AAA and it accounts for ~15,000 deaths per year in the United States alone. If left untreated, AAA might gradually expand until rupture; the most catastrophic complication of the aneurysmal disease that is accompanied by a striking overall mortality of 80%. The precise mechanisms leading to AAA rupture remains unclear. Therefore, characterization of disturbed hemodynamics within AAAs will help to understand th
