Chronic stress-induced brain-derived small extracellular vesicles promote colorectal cancer through Treg differentiation.

BACKGROUND: Chronic stress is increasingly recognised as a risk factor for poor prognosis in colorectal cancer (CRC) through sustained activation of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis and sympathetic nervous system, yet the mechanisms by which psychological stress signals are transmitted from the central nervous system to the peripheral tumour immune microenvironment remain poorly understood. Brain-derived small extracellular vesicles (BD-sEVs), which can cross the blood-brain barrier, represent potential mediators of this neuroimmune crosstalk. METHODS: A chronic restraint stress

Knowledge, Attitude, and Barriers Influencing Seasonal Influenza Vaccination Uptake.

BACKGROUND: Seasonal influenza is an acute respiratory infection caused by influenza viruses that are highly contagious and circulate in all parts of the world. It gives rise to an estimated 3 to 5 million cases of severe illness and about 250,000 to 500,000 deaths globally each year. Influenza tends to cause epidemics with serious illness and death among high-risk groups such as children aged 5 years and younger, pregnant women, elderly ≥65 years of age, and with chronic medical conditions. According to the Centers for Disease Prevention and Control (CDC), all people who are 6 months old and

Altered cortisol metabolism in polycystic ovary syndrome: insulin enhances 5alpha-reduction but not the elevated adrenal steroid production rates.

Androgen excess in women with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) may be ovarian and/or adrenal in origin, and one proposed contributing mechanism is altered cortisol metabolism. Increased peripheral metabolism of cortisol may occur by enhanced inactivation of cortisol by 5alpha-reductase (5alpha-R) or impaired reactivation of cortisol from cortisone by 11beta-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase type 1 (11beta-HSD1) resulting in decreased negative feedback suppression of ACTH secretion maintaining normal plasma cortisol concentrations at the expense of androgen excess. We have tested whether any enzyme

[Myiasis caused by Oestridae: serological and molecular diagnosis].

Myiasis-causing Oestridae (bot flies) infect several animal species world-wide, from palaearctic to subtropical/tropical areas. Oestrids affect livestock production causing abortion, reduced milk production, losses in weight and fertility, poor hide quality and an impairment of the host's immune system. In the last few years much research has been carried out on the immunology of these infestations, in order to acquire efficient and reliable diagnostic serological tools; the genome of the different species of Oestridae has been studied to further their molecular identification, taxonomy and ph

Comparison of Fatty Acid Binding Protein 3 and Ankle Brachial Index for Predicting Peripheral Artery Disease Outcomes.

Background: Peripheral artery disease (PAD) impacts more than 200 million individuals globally. Despite its prevalence, management remains suboptimal, partly due to the lack of reliable blood-based biomarkers. The ankle-brachial index (ABI), the current gold-standard test for PAD, is limited by inter-operator variability, misinterpretation, and reduced accuracy in patients with diabetes. Fatty acid binding protein 3 (FABP3) has emerged as a potential biomarker for PAD; however, its prognostic performance relative to ABI remains unclear. This study compared FABP3 and ABI for predicting PAD outc

Circulating spexin levels in women with PCOS (PMOS): relationships with phoenixin, BMI and perceived stress.

BACKGROUND: Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), for which the term polyendocrine metabolic ovarian syndrome (PMOS) has recently been proposed to better reflect its complex endocrine and metabolic nature, is a common endocrine disorder associated with metabolic disturbances, including insulin resistance and obesity, chronic anovulation and impaired fertility. Its pathogenesis is complex and multifactorial, involving interrelated mechanisms such as impaired insulin action and compensatory hyperinsulinemia, neuroendocrine dysregulation, altered ovarian steroidogenesis and increased adrenal androgen

Unveiling the Clinical and Biochemical Impact of Vitamin D Deficiency in Indian Rheumatoid Arthritis Patients: A Cross-Sectional Analysis.

Background Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a chronic autoimmune disease characterized by persistent synovial inflammation, joint destruction, and systemic complications. Despite therapeutic advances, disease activity remains variable, and modifiable factors influencing severity are under investigation. Vitamin D, beyond its role in bone metabolism, exerts immunomodulatory effects and may influence RA pathogenesis. However, evidence regarding its association with disease activity remains inconsistent. This study aimed to evaluate the clinical and biochemical correlates of serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D

Cardiac resynchronization therapy and bone marrow cell transplantation in patients with ischemic heart failure and electromechanical dyssynchrony: a randomized pilot study.

Most studies have confirmed the beneficial effects of autologous bone marrow mononuclear cell (BMMC) transplantation on angina, myocardial perfusion, regional wall motion, and LV ejection fraction (LVEF). Cardiac resynchronization therapy (CRT) has also shown a beneficial effect in patients with heart failure (HF) and electrical/mechanical dyssynchrony. However, the relative contribution of BMMC and CRT in patients with ischemic HF and electromechanical dyssynchrony has never been investigated. The aim of this study was to evaluate the benefit of combining BMMC transplantation with CRT in pati

[Tripeptide polymer-based cell-imprinted hydrogels for high-efficiency circulating tumor cell capture].

Circulating tumor cells (CTC) have emerged as crucial mediators in the metastatic cascade, offering invaluable insights as real-time liquid biomarkers for cancer progression, prognosis, and treatment response. Their exceptionally low concentration in peripheral blood, which typically ranges from a handful to a few dozen cells per milliliter amidst billions of background blood cells, poses formidable challenges for isolation and molecular characterization. Despite this, the efficient and specific capture of CTC holds tremendous potential for revolutionizing early cancer detection, dynamic monit

Efficacy of a monovalent (D614) SARS-CoV-2 recombinant protein vaccine with AS03 adjuvant in adults: a phase 3, multi-country study.

BACKGROUND: The literature on first generation COVID-19 vaccines show they were less effective against new SARS-CoV-2 variants of concern including Omicron (BA.1, BA.2, BA.4 and BA.5 subvariants). New vaccines developed against variant strains may provide cross-protection against emerging variants when used as boosters and facilitate vaccination across a range of countries, healthcare settings and populations. However, there are no data on such vaccines when used as a primary series. METHODS: A global Phase 3, multi-stage efficacy study (NCT04904549) among adults (≥18 years) was conducted in
