We report the first case of a tinea corporis with partly profound lesions in a 13-year-old girl on her arms, legs and trunk due to Trichophyton schoenleinii but without any lesion on scalp and hair. Moreover, this is the first case of an infection with Trichophyton schoenleinii in Germany since more than 40 years. The diagnosis was confirmed by microscopy of mycological specimens. Other causes of the skin symptoms could be excluded (atopic dermatitis, bacterial or other fungal infection). Clinical and epidemiological aspects of this anthropophile dermatophyte are briefly reviewed.

Stiff skin syndrome (SSS) is a rare disorder characterized by stony-hard skin, limited joint mobility and mild hypertrichosis. We present a severe case in a 4-year-old boy. In addition to the clinical and histological features of SSS, our patient also had muscle and bone involvement along with pyloric stenosis, gastro-esophageal reflux, inguinal hernias and atopic dermatitis. We highlight the complexity of this case and the diagnostic approach to patients with this disorder. We also review and summarize the 24 cases previously reported in the literature.

In 100 dogs with 4 inflammatory dermatologic diseases, buffy coat preparations from EDTA-treated blood samples were examined cytologically. Fifty-four dogs had atopy, 26 had flea-bite hypersensitivity, 17 had sarcoptic mange, and 3 had food allergy. Twenty-eight dogs had 2 or more concurrent skin diseases; most of these had secondary pyoderma. Dogs did not have mast cell tumors. Thirteen samples contained 1 or more mast cells/4 slides reviewed. One patient, sensitive to styrene, cross-reacted at patch testing to 2-,3-and 4-vinyltoluene (2-,3-and 4-methylstyrene) and to the metabolites styrene epoxide and 4-vinylphenol (4-hydroxy-styrene). It is assumed that styrene is a prohapten metabolized in the skin by aryl hydrocarbon hydroxylase (AHH) to styrene epoxide acting as the true hapten. Styrene occurs in nature and as a synthetic product. Vinyltoluenes (methylstyrenes) occur as synthetic products in plastics. 4-vinylphenol (4-hydroxystyrene) occurs frequently in different ciders, wines, foods and berries, e.g. cloudberry.

This review summarizes the major categories of plant dermatitis: (1) mechanical injury, (2) pharmacologic injury, (3) primary irritant phytodermatitis, (4) allergic phytodermatitis, (5) pseudophytodermatitis, (6) phytophotodermatitis, and (7) pseudophytophotodermatitis.
