Mild anaemia in African school children: effect on running performance and an intervention trial.

Blood haemoglobin concentrations and reticulocyte counts were determined in 430 school children in grades 1, 3 and 5 in a small township in rural Zambia at the end of the rainy season. Running capacity was estimated by the 12-min running test. Age, sex, height, weight, social and nutritional indicators were recorded. Mean haemoglobin was 125.3 g/1 +/- 12.3 SD. Low haemoglobin was associated with indicators of a traditional way of life. After a controlled trial of iron, folic acid, tetrachlorethylene and chloroquine lasting for 6 weeks, mean haemoglobin in all the children was 128.8 g/1 +/- 10.

Control of diarrhoeal disease in Tonga 1978-83.

Tonga, like many developing countries, suffers from a shortage of medical staff and a high morbidity and mortality from paediatric diarrhoeal disease. In 1980 a programme was started to train medical assistants and village administrators in the correct use of oral rehydration salt solution for rehydration. The effect on morbidity, mortality, and admission to hospital over the six years 1978-83 was assessed. After the introduction of the scheme the number of deaths due to diarrhoea fell considerably and the state of hydration in children admitted to hospital with diarrhoea greatly improved. It …

Economic aspects of village health.

Given the poor quantity and quality of medical care in most villages in the developing countries, the economic determinants of village health are the supply of labour, the cash flow associated with that labour and the availability of land. The paper examines these in the three classical 'time periods', arguing that inability to meet labour peaks is of great significance in explaining seasonal shortage of food and chronic shortage of cash. It also explains community indifference to upkeep of social overhead capital. Substitution of capital goods for labour is socially differentiated, not least …

Socioeconomic Factors Influencing Treatment and Outcomes in Acute Myeloid Leukemia.

Evaluation and reduction of socioeconomic inequalities in cancer survival are a public health priority worldwide. In developing countries such as India, the high-economic burden of acute myeloid leukemia (AML) remains understudied despite its severe impact on outcomes. This study investigated the impact of socioeconomic factors on mortality and survival in AML. Conducted from January 2019 to February 2022 at a tertiary care center in India, it included 41 newly diagnosed AML patients. Socioeconomic determinants such as education, insurance status, social support, and socioeconomic status (SES)…

First successful use of translocated autologous great saphenous vein to the upper arm for hemodialysis access in Vietnam: A 3-year follow-up case report.

The rising global incidence of kidney failure has increased the demand for long-term hemodialysis, which requires reliable vascular access. … option for vascular access compared to prosthetic grafts. This approach is particularly crucial in developing countries, where economic constraints and the high prevalence of kidney disease often limit access to prosthetic grafts.

Multiple Cystic Brain Infection: A Diagnostic Dilemma of Neurocysticercosis and Intracranial Tuberculoma.

Neurocysticercosis (NCC) is a central nervous system infection caused by Taenia solium or pork tapeworm. It affects millions worldwide and represents a leading cause of epilepsy in developing countries. NCC may be challenging to distinguish from intracranial tuberculomas, with tuberculosis being highly prevalent in developing countries. We highlight the importance of clinical history, including exposure history and neuroimaging, in obtaining an accurate diagnosis to enable prompt treatment. This report presents the case of a 26-year-old man diagnosed with NCC and presenting with acute giddines…

Neutrophils in Mycobacterium tuberculosis.

Mycobacterium tuberculosis (M. tb) continues to be a leading cause of mortality within developing countries. The BCG vaccine to promote immunity against M. tb is widely used in developing countries and only in specific circumstances within the United States. However, current the literature reports equivocal data on the efficacy of the BCG vaccine. Critical within their role in the innate immune response, neutrophils serve as one of the first responders to infectious pathogens such as M. tb. Neutrophils promote effective clearance of M. tb through processes such as phagocytosis and the secretio…

Coexistence of type 1 and type 2 diabetes mellitus: a case report of "double" diabetes in a 17-year-old Nigerian girl.

Double diabetes otherwise known as hybrid diabetes, a new variant, is a combination of both type 1 and type 2 diabetes in children and adolescents. It is a diabetes variant increasing in prevalence in developed countries because of epidemic obesity among children and adolescents but extremely rare in developing countries. Double diabetes is characterized by features of both type 1 (diabetes auto-antibodies) and type 2 (obesity and insulin resistance). This occurrence can either develop on a background of type 1 diabetes due to an abnormal increase in weight from physiological growth spurt in a…

Using a Smartphone as an Exoscope Where an Operating Microscope is not Available.

OBJECTIVE: Neurosurgical operating rooms are equipped with microscopes in order to provide a good standard of care. Nevertheless, in developing countries, microscopes are not always available. During a short period in a western Africa hospital, we adapted our smartphones as a valid alternative to the microscope. METHODS: Using a shaped tin can, a smartphone cover, and a rod fixed to the bed, we could make a support for a smartphone creating a simple "homemade" exoscope, which allowed us to have magnification and light in the surgical field. RESULTS: Among others, we performed 5 surgical inte…

A single-dose cytomegalovirus-based vaccine encoding tetanus toxin fragment C induces sustained levels of protective tetanus toxin antibodies in mice.

The current commercially available vaccine used to prevent tetanus disease following infection with the anaerobic bacterium Clostridium tetani is safe and effective. However, tetanus remains a major source of mortality in developing countries. In 2008, neonatal tetanus was estimated to have caused >59,000 deaths, accounting for 1% of worldwide infant mortality, primarily in poorer nations. The cost of multiple vaccine doses administered by injection necessary to achieve protective levels of anti-tetanus toxoid antibodies is the primary reason for low vaccine coverage. Herein, we show that a no…

Clinical profile and outcome of bipolar disorder patients receiving electroconvulsive therapy: a study from north India.

BACKGROUND: Although electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) is used quite frequently among the bipolar patients in developing countries, very little data are available with regard to its effectiveness from the developing countries. AIM: A retrospective case note review was carried out of bipolar disorder patients who were given ECT. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Details of demographic and clinical profile, indications for ECT, response patterns, adverse effects, etc. were recorded. RESULTS: Among all the patients who received ECT, 18% were diagnosed to have bipolar disorder. ECT was administered most com…

Vi-CRM 197 as a new conjugate vaccine against Salmonella Typhi.

An efficacious, low cost vaccine against typhoid fever, especially for young children, would make a major impact on disease burden in developing countries. The virulence capsular polysaccharide of Salmonella Typhi (Vi) coupled to recombinant mutant Pseudomonas aeruginosa exoprotein A (Vi-rEPA) has been shown to be highly efficacious. We investigated the use of carrier proteins included in infant vaccines, standardized the conjugation process and developed key assays required for routine lot release at production scale. Vi from a BSL1 organism, Citrobacter freundii, strain WR7011, was used as a…
