Plus Disease: Why is it Important in Retinopathy of Prematurity?

Retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) is one of the leading causes of preventable blindness in childhood. Early posterior pole vascular signs of severe ROP have been studied since the first description of the disease. The progressive changes that take place in the posterior pole vessels of an extremely premature baby occur in a predictable fashion soon after birth. These vascular changes are described as plus disease and are defined as abnormal dilation and tortousity of the blood vessels during ROP that may go on to total retinal detachment. The ophthalmological community now has a better understa

Obstructive jaundice caused by Clonorchiasis-associated duodenal papillitis: a case report.

We describe an unusual presentation of Clonorchis sinensis infection with obstructive jaundice due to duodenal papillitis which was relieved dramatically by endoscopic sphincterotomy. A 26-yr-old male presented with complaints of fatigue, weight loss and painless jaundice. The history was significant for frequent ingestion of raw freshwater fish. The patient underwent endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography for evaluation of obstructive jaundice. The duodenal papilla was markedly edematous with a bulging configuration and hyperemic changes at the orifice. Cholangiography revealed mild b

Structure of the lamin A/C R482W mutant responsible for dominant familial partial lipodystrophy (FPLD).

Proteins of the A-type lamin family, which consists of two members, lamin A and lamin C, are the major components of a thin proteinaceous filamentous meshwork, the lamina, that underlies the inner nuclear membrane. A-type lamins have recently become the focus of extensive functional studies as a consequence of the linking of at least eight congenital diseases to mutations in the lamin A/C gene (LMNA). This spectrum of pathologies, which mostly manifest themselves as dominant traits, includes muscle dystrophies, dilated cardiomyopathies, the premature aging syndrome Hutchinson-Guilford progeria

Enteric type urachal adenocarcinoma: a case report.

Urachal pathology is rare. The most frequently reported lesion is urachal adenocarcinoma. The pathogenesis of urachal adenocarcinoma is unknown. We report a case of a 55-year-old man who presented with microscopic hematuria. Clinical work up showed a tumor involving the urinary bladder with extravesical extension. Masses or tumors involving other organs were excluded. Partial cystectomy revealed a distended bladder wall with the formation of a cystically dilated mass filled with mucoid material. Microscopic examination showed enteric type adenocarcinoma with abundant mucin formation. The neopl

[A case of transmesocolic hernia in elderly person without a history of operation].

Internal hernia is defined as the herniation of viscera through an anatomic or pathologic opening within the boundaries of peritoneal cavity. Transmesocolic hernia, a subtype of internal hernia, has a herniated sac through the transverse mesocolon. Transmesocolic hernia has been rarely described in the literature, and most of reported cases were associated with a history of operation or congenital anormaly. A 72-year-old female with chronic intermittent abdominal pain and bloating was admitted. Small bowel series showed multiple jejunal loops confined to the left upper quadrant of abdomen. Abd

Ectopic cervico-mediastinal thymoma confirmed by flow cytometric analysis of tumor-derived lymphocytes.

Ectopic cervical or cervico-mediastinal thymomas are very rare and most of them are asymptomatic, except for the presence of a cervical mass. We present the case of a 71-year-old man with an ectopic cervico-mediastinal thymoma threatening superior vena cava syndrome. He had a slight headache and presented with venous dilatation on the chest wall. A computed tomographic scan and magnetic resonance imaging of the chest demonstrated a mass extending from the right neck to the hilum, that indented the trachea and compressed and displaced the brachiocephalic veins anteriorly. Under a right hemicoll

[Reactivation of ocular toxoplasmosis after laser in situ keratomileusis].

Laser in situ keratomileusis (LASIK) is a safe and efficient refractive surgical procedure that provides excellent results in most cases. Several complications have been reported, most of them related to the posterior segment of the eye. Although they are quite rare, a growing number of vitreoretinal pathologic conditions after LASIK have been reported. To date no article has reported an inflammatory or infectious disease of the posterior segment after a LASIK procedure. We report a case of reactivation of toxoplasmic chorioretinitis that occurred 5 days after a LASIK procedure. Clinical outco

Congestive heart failure associated with a large transverse left ventricular moderator band in a cat.

Cardiomyopathy associated with abnormal trabecular bands of tissue traversing one or both ventricles is reported rarely in cats. The case of a 9-year-old cat which presented in congestive heart failure is reported. Multiple cardiac abnormalities were found, including a large trabecular tissue bridge which bisected the left ventricle. Other findings included arrhythmia, thrombocytopaenia and raised serum creatine kinase. The cat was euthanased due to clinical deterioration. Necropsy findings included increased cardiac weight, the division of the left ventricle by a large trabecular band compose

Large uterine fibroids causing mechanical obstruction of the inferior vena cava and subsequent thrombosis: a case report.

A 35-year-old woman presented with severe left leg swelling and pain after a spontaneous abortion of a 20-week fetus. Duplex ultrasound imaging confirmed venous thrombosis of the left iliac, common femoral, superficial femoral, deep femoral, greater saphenous, posterior tibial, and popliteal, peroneal, and soleal veins. A computed tomography scan showed large uterine fibroids that were completely compressing the distal inferior vena cava and both ureters, with associated hydronephrosis. A magnetic resonance venography showed the inferior vena cava proximal to the mechanical obstruction was fre

Abdominal ultrasonography findings in patients with spinal cord injury in Korea.

This is a retrospective study of 500 patients with spinal cord injury who underwent abdominal ultrasonography as a routine screening test from 2000 to 2003. We analyzed the results according to the different abdominal organ systems. Among the 500 cases, 226 (45.2%) showed abnormal findings. 98 cases of abnormal findings in the liver included 75 of fatty liver and 13 of mass. The 88 cases of abnormal findings in the bladder included 56 of bladder wall thickening, 14 of cystitis and 10 of urinary stone. The 35 cases of abnormal findings in the kidney included 19 of renal cyst and 6 of pelvic dil

[MRI findings in patients with epilepsy debuting with febrile seizures].

One of the most controversial issues in epilepsy research is whether prolonged febrile seizures (FS) cause mesial temporal sclerosis (MTS) and temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE). Mesial temporal sclerosis is the pathological substrate found in patients with TLE and history of FS. The reasons that determine development of TLE and FC are presented by two main groups: perinatal and postnatal. 16 patients with TLE were examined to study the relation between FC and MTS. 10 patients (62,5%) had a history of complex febrile convulsions (with prolonged duration, focal features, posttical periods). Lucio's phenomenon/erythema necroticans.

Lucio's phenomenon/erythema necroticans is a peculiar reaction pattern that occurs in untreated pure primitive diffuse lepromatous leprosy (PPDL) and/or relapsing leprosy recognized as spotted leprosy of Lucio. The small number of reported cases in the world literature suggests that it is fairly uncommon. Its clinical features are fairly characteristic and consist of extensive, bizarre, painful ulcerations of the skin, with constitutional symptoms being conspicuous by their absence. The clinical diagnosis is confirmed by microscopic pathology marked by proliferation and mobilization of polybla

The pathology of hypertrophic cardiomyopathy.

Sudden cardiac death (SCD) is devastating at any age, but even more so when the individual affected is young and asymptomatic, and the death is entirely unexpected. SCD is a catastrophic complication of hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) and may be the first manifestation of this disease. HCM is an inherited intrinsic disease of the myocardium characterized by left ventricular hypertrophy without chamber dilatation, in the absence of either a systemic or other cardiac disease, which may cause a similar magnitude of hypertrophy. HCM may be a clinically silent disease. Indeed, the pathologist may

Duplication of transverse colon: report of one case.

Alimentary tract duplications are very rare, with a reported incidence of 1 in 5000 live births. However, it rarely affects the transverse colon. We reported a case of duplication of the transverse colon in a 12-year-old boy with an unusual presentation mimicking megacolon. Barium enema revealed a large sac with massive fecal material retention in the left side of abdomen. Barium filling of the sac displacing bowel loops was noted on the post-evacuation film. He received a segmental resection of the transverse colon including the duplicated colon and end-to-end colo-colostomy. Pathology reveal

Shah-Waardenburg syndrome and Dandy-Walker malformation: an autopsy report.

Autopsy reports of individuals with Shah-Waardenburg syndrome are rare, and to the best of our knowledge, have never been reported in association with Dandy-Walker malformation. This report documents the autopsy findings of a 2.5-year-old boy with Shah-Waardenburg syndrome (Type IV Waardenburg syndrome) and a Dandy-Walker malformation. The patient had a past medical history of congenital deafness, skin and hair pigmentary disturbances, Hirschsprun disease and hydrocephalus. At autopsy, multiple patches of dermal and hair hypopigmentation were observed over the face, trunk, eyelashes and eyebro

Cavernous pancreatic ductal ectasia with smooth muscle proliferation causing recurrent acute pancreatitis.

BACKGROUND: Pancreatic cystic lesions have various etiologies, including pseudocyst (inflammatory cyst), retention cyst, congenital cyst, and neoplastic cyst. RESULTS: This report describes a previously unreported, unique pancreatic cyst-like lesion causing recurrent acute pancreatitis. A 23-yr-old man had an 8 x 5 x 3-cm pancreatic head mass which contained multiple 3-7-mm cysts communicating with the main pancreatic duct on imaging studies. Pancreatoduodenectomy with mass excision prevented further attacks of acute pancreatitis. Pathological examination showed multiple cystic dilatations of

Ultrasonographic detection of intrauterine intussusception resulting in ileal atresia complicated by meconium peritonitis.

A neonate with ileal atresia (IA) complicated by meconium peritonitis (MP) whose prenatal ultrasonography (US) detected an intrauterine intussusception (IUI) is reported. Fetal ascites, dilated bowel loops, and abdominal calcifications were identified on serial US from 25 weeks of gestation. Intestinal loops with high echogenecity and a "target-like" appearance suggestive of IUI were detected in the right lower quadrant. The 2,680-g male was delivered vaginally at term and underwent a laparotomy. Fibrous adhesions and small calcifications were scattered throughout the peritoneal cavity. IA (in

MRI for the assessment of the malformed fetus.

Ultrafast MRI sequences have changed the use of MRI for evaluating fetal abnormalities. Currently, the best application is the demonstration of normal fetal brain development and the further definition of suspected brain abnormalities found on ultrasound. MRI differentiates well the various types of fetal ventriculomegaly. Superior posterior fossa visualization allows differentiation of Dandy Walker malformation from a large cisterna magna. Anomalies of the corpus callosum and some disorders of neuronal migration can be seen. MRI is also valuable in the evaluation of fetal giant neck masses fo
