[Diverticular disease of the vermiform appendix. Anatomo-clinical observations].

The authors describe a case of diverticular disease of the appendix. The diagnosis is intraoperative and histological while therapy is based on surgical treatment. The authors seem to be favorable to surgical treatment in case of diverticulosis of the appendix in order to avoid dangerous complications.

A rare type of intramural esophageal diverticulosis.

Benign stenosis of the mid-thoracic esophagus developed in a 28-yr-old man. At operation, the esophageal wall was adherent to the surrounding tissues at the level of the stricture, and the esophageal wall appeared scarred and felt hard. Pathologic examination of the resected specimen showed many submucosal cystic spaces associated with mucosal depressions. Based on these findings, a diagnosis of esophageal intramural diverticulosis was made. However, some cystic spaces ran parallel to the long axis of the esophagus, and one had penetrated the muscular layers and led into the inflammatory mass.

[Surgical treatment of duodenal diverticula].

The work generalized an experience with the treatment of 747 patients with diverticula of the duodenum. Operations were performed on 326 of them (43.6%). In 172 patients the diverticula were associated with other diseases of organs of the abdominal cavity. Such patients were subjected to associated operations. The dependence of the clinical picture of inflamed diverticula on their localization is described. The author determines the surgeons' strategy, indications and volume of the surgery in different localizations of the diverticula. A new operation of exclusion of the duodenum allowing the

Intramural pseudodiverticulosis of the oesophagus. A case report.

A patient with oesophageal intramural pseudodiverticulosis (believed to be the first case reported in the southern African literature) is described and the literature is reviewed. Although the pathogenesis of the condition remains uncertain, reflux oesophagitis, increased intra-oesophageal pressure and chronic monilial oesophagitis may be important antecedents. The characteristic histopathological findings include dilatation of the excretory ducts of the submucosal oesophageal mucous glands with periductal inflammation. The appearance of multiple flask-shaped outpouchings on barium studies is

[Diverticular disease of the colon. Physiopathology and medical treatment].

Almost unknown in 1900, diverticular disease has become the commonest disease of the colon and appears to be a deficiency disease caused by the removal of vegetable fibre from the diet. It occurs most commonly in the sigmoid colon and is frequently asymptomatic, but it may be symptomatic without evidence of inflammation. It may be complicated by inflammation or bleeding. A high residue diet forms the rational basis for successful therapy.

The use of a stapling instrument in the surgery of hypopharyngeal diverticula.

There have been no early complications following the use of a stapling instrument in the surgery of hypopharyngeal diverticula, and, in addition, the technique is very simple. It is too early to know what the recurrence rate might be but it is the author's intention to persevere with this technique since it promises to represent a considerable advance on the traditional operation. It is hoped to report more extensive results at a future date.
