Effect of Galcanezumab on Total Pain Burden in Patients Who Had Previously Not Benefited from Migraine Preventive Medication (CONQUER Trial): A Post Hoc Analysis.

INTRODUCTION: In evaluating therapies for migraine prevention, emphasis is placed on frequency and less attention is paid to duration or severity. Total pain burden (TPB) combines frequency, duration, and severity of migraine headache, and has the potential to further characterize the benefit of preventive treatment using a single composite measure. TPB was previously used to characterize response to galcanezumab (GMB) in patients with migraine. In this post hoc analysis we assessed the impact of GMB in lowering TPB in patients who had previously not benefited from two to four categories of mi

Does transcranial direct current stimulation enhance cognitive performance in Parkinson's disease mild cognitive impairment? An event-related potentials and neuropsychological assessment study.

BACKGROUND: Parkinson's disease-mild cognitive impairment (PD-MCI) is garnering attention as a key interventional period for cognitive impairment. Currently, there are no approved treatments for PD-MCI and encouraging results of transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) combined with other interventions have been proposed, though the efficacy and neural mechanisms of tDCS alone have not been studied in PD-MCI yet. OBJECTIVES: The present double-blind, randomized, sham-controlled study assessed the effects of tDCS over the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex on cognitive functions via neuropsy

Transcranial Direct Current Stimulation Paired With Verb Network Strengthening Treatment Improves Verb Naming in Primary Progressive Aphasia: A Case Series.

PURPOSE: There are few evidence-based treatments for language deficits in primary progressive aphasia (PPA). PPA treatments are often adopted from the poststroke aphasia literature. The poststroke aphasia literature has shown promising results using Verb Network Strengthening Treatment (VNeST), a behavioral therapy that focuses on improving naming by producing verbs and their arguments in phrases and sentences. Emerging research in poststroke aphasia and PPA has shown promising results pairing behavioral language therapy with transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS). METHOD: This study

Transcranial Direct Current Stimulation (tDCS): Pain Management in End-Stage Renal Disease - Report of an Early Randomized Controlled Trial.

CONTEXT: Chronic pain in end-stage renal disease (ESRD) is an increasingly neglected clinical problem affecting more than 60% of patients. Long-term chronic pain could be associated with brain imbalance in circuits of pain matrix and is associated with poor quality of life (QoL) and mood disturbance. OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was evaluating the effects of transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) on pain, QoL, depression, anxiety and affectivity in ESRD patients undergoing hemodialysis (HD). METHODS: This double-blind, randomized, sham-controlled trial included 30 patients with

Cingulate transcranial direct current stimulation in adults with HIV.

BACKGROUND: Neuronal dysfunction plays an important role in the high prevalence of HIV-associated neurocognitive disorders (HAND) in people with HIV (PWH). Transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS)-with its capability to improve neuronal function-may have the potential to serve as an alternative therapeutic approach for HAND. Brain imaging and neurobehavioral studies provide converging evidence that injury to the anterior cingulate cortex (ACC) is highly prevalent and contributes to HAND in PWH, suggesting that ACC may serve as a potential neuromodulation target for HAND. Here we conducte

Multichannel transcranial direct current stimulation over the left dorsolateral prefrontal cortex may modulate the induction of secondary hyperalgesia, a double-blinded cross-over study in healthy volunteers.

BACKGROUND: Central sensitization is thought to play a critical role in the development of chronic pain, and secondary mechanical hyperalgesia is considered one of its hall-mark features. Consequently, interventions capable of modulating its development could have important therapeutic value. Non-invasive neuromodulation of the left dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC) has shown potential to reduce pain, both in healthy volunteers and in patients. Whether it can modulate the induction of central sensitization, however, is less well known. OBJECTIVE: To determine whether multifocal transcran

800 IU versus 400 IU per day of vitamin D3 in term breastfed infants: a randomized controlled trial from an LMIC.

This open-label, block-randomized controlled trial compared the effect of 800 IU/day and 400 IU/day of oral vitamin D3 supplementation in reducing vitamin D insufficiency (VDI) among healthy-term breastfed infants at 14 weeks of postnatal age. All eligible infants were randomized to receive either 800 or 400 IU/day of oral vitamin D3 (starting within the first week until 14 weeks). The primary outcome was the proportion of infants with VDI (25-OH-D < 20 ng/ml) at 14 weeks. Secondary outcomes were vitamin D deficiency (VDD, < 12 ng/ml), severe VDD (< 5 ng/ml), anthropometry, biochemical or clin

High-definition transcranial direct current stimulation (HD-tDCS) as augmentation therapy in late-life depression (LLD) with suboptimal response to treatment-a study protocol for a double-blinded randomized sham-controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Late-life depression (LLD) has a poorer prognosis and higher relapse rate than younger adults, with up to one third of patients with LLD showing suboptimal response to antidepressant therapy. LLD has been associated with significant impairment in cognition and daily functioning. Few studies have evaluated the therapeutic effects of high-definition transcranial direct current stimulation (HD-tDCS) on depressive and cognitive symptoms of LLD. The current randomized controlled trial assesses the efficacy of HD-tDCS as an augmentation therapy with antidepressants compared to sham-contr

Neurologic music therapy combined with EEG-tDCS for upper motor extremity performance in patients with corticobasal syndrome: Study protocol for a novel approach.

BACKGROUND: Corticobasal syndrome (CBS) is an atypical parkinsonian disorder that involves degeneration of brain regions associated with motor coordination and sensory processing. Combining transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) with rehabilitation training has been shown to improve upper-limb performance in other disease models. Here, we describe the protocol investigating whether tDCS with neurologic music therapy (NMT) (patterned sensory enhancement and therapeutic instrumental music performance) enhances functional arm/hand performance in individuals with CBS. METHODS: Study parti

The Diurnal Blood Metabolome and Effects of Vitamin D Supplementation: A Randomised Crossover Trial in Postmenopausal Women.

A way to maintain an adequate vitamin D status is through supplementation. Demonstration of blood-metabolome rhythmicity of vitamin D3 post-dosing effects is lacking in the pharmaco-metabonomics area. Thus, the overall aim of this study was to investigate the diurnal changes in the blood metabolome and how these are affected by vitamin D3 supplementation. The study was conducted as a crossover study, and the treatment included 200 µg (8000 IU) of vitamin D3 as compared with placebo with a washout period of at least 10 days. The participants were postmenopausal women aged 60−80 years (N = 29) w
