A series of eight studies focuses on how the avoidance system represented by neuroticism can lead to disinhibited approach tendencies. Based on research which argues that hemispheric preferences predispose the left hemisphere to fast action goal formation, and contralateral pathways between ear and brain, it is proposed that (a) people with a right ear preference will engage in fast action goal formation and (b) disinhibited approach results from neurotic people who reduce anxiety by means of fast action goal formation. Otitis media with effusion (OME) is an inflammatory disease of the middle ear that causes most cases of conductive hearing loss observed in the pediatric population. With the long term goal of evaluating middle ear function with OME, the aim of the current study was to create an animal model of OME in which middle ear transfer functions could be measured. The Hmx homeobox gene family is comprised of three members in mammals, Hmx1, Hmx2, and Hmx3, which are conserved across the animal kingdom and are part of the larger NKL clustered family of homeobox genes. Expression domains of Hmx genes in distantly related species such as Drosophila and mouse suggest an ancestral function in rostral central nervous system development. We report on 20 individuals in 4 kindreds with auriculo-condylar syndrome (ACS), an autosomal dominant disorder characterized by congenital auricular clefts, mandibular condyle hypoplasia, temporomandibular joint (TMJ) abnormalities, micrognathia, microstomia, and a round facial appearance with prominent cheeks. Acute auricular haematoma is a common problem in rugby players and can be difficult to treat due to re-accumulation of the fluid and can subsequently cause the unsightly cauliflower ear. We present a case of auricular haematoma affecting the central part of the pinna in a professional rugby player. This was treated successfully by aspiration and the use of silicone splints which allowed the player to continue training and competing.

A total of 1527 cases of total body cancer (TBC) presented at M G I M S between 1(st) Jan. 1992 to 30(th) April 1999. ENPLO cancers comprised 656 (42.9%)casees. Ca cervix was the commonest cancer amongst TBC comprising 15.3% cases. Ca oral cavity was the commoncest among ENPLO cancers comprising 24.3% cases followed by Ca oesophagus comprising 19.1% Ca oropharynx comprising 16.9%, Ca hypopharynx comprising 13.4%, Ca larynx comprising 11.3% and Ca Nose and PNS comprising 5.7% cases. ENPLI cancers constiuted the major burden of TBC in our hospital.

We have demonstrated that the phenotype of the mouse mutant sex-linked fidget ( slf ) is caused by developmental malformations of the inner ear that result in hearing loss and vestibular dysfunction. Recently, pilot mapping experiments suggested that the mouse Brn4 / Pou3f4 gene co-segregated with the slf locus on the mouse X chromosome.
