Novel photoelectron-driven nitrate reduction in anammox granules using photosensitive semiconductor iron mineral for wastewater treatment.

The accumulation of nitrate byproducts and limited electron availability fundamentally constrain the efficacy of anaerobic ammonium oxidation (anammox) processes. While iron minerals regulate electron transfer, their potential to drive anammox via semiconductive photoexcitation remains underexplored. Here, we establish a novel "Photo-Chemo-Bio" strategy to overcome these thermodynamic bottlenecks using light-excited hematite (α-Fe2O3). Among tested minerals, hematite exhibited superior band-structure suitability, achieving a 3.65-fold photocurrent enhancement (4.06 μA·cm-2) upon bio-hybridizat

Constructing Cu3P Quantum Dots/Cu-Doped ZnIn2S4 p-n Heterojunctions for Efficient Methanol Oxidation Coupled with Synchronous Hydrogen Generation.

The solar-driven direct conversion of methanol to ethylene glycol, formaldehyde and simultaneous H2 generation is an appealing strategy for converting sunlight to chemical energy. However, the low efficiency and stability of the photocatalyst remain critical bottlenecks hindering the practical implementation of this reaction. Herein, we synthesized the Cu3P quantum dots/Cu-doped ZnIn2S4 p-n junction for efficient methanol oxidation and synchronous H2 generation. The highly dispersed Cu3P quantum dots promote electron-hole separation and furnish abundant catalytic sites. Moreover, the construct

Unraveling photocatalytic CO2 reduction mechanisms via in situ/operando characterization: From dynamic active sites to reaction pathways.

Solar-driven photocatalytic CO2 reduction converts greenhouse gas into carbonaceous fuels and chemicals, offering a green route to address fossil energy shortages and advance carbon neutrality. However, the field faces core challenges of narrow visible-light response, low quantum efficiency, and poor product selectivity. The fundamental bottleneck lies in ambiguous multi-interface coupled reaction mechanisms. Conventional offline static characterization only captures pre- and post-reaction snapshots, failing to establish correlations among catalyst structure, process behavior, and catalytic pe

Catalytic Mechanism of γ-Elimination and Michael Addition Catalyzed by Pyridoxal-5'-Phosphate-Dependent γ-Substitution Enzyme Fub7 Involved in the Biosynthesis of 5-Alkyl-pipecolic Acid.

Fub7 is a rare pyridoxal 5'-phosphate (PLP)-dependent enzyme that can subsequently catalyze the γ-elimination of O-acetyl-l-homoserine (OAH) and Michael addition with n-valeraldehyde (NVA) to synthesize 5-alkyl-pipecolic acid, which shows significant potential in synthetic chemistry. In this study, we constructed the computational models and performed MD and QM/MM calculations to illuminate the complete catalytic cycle of Fub7, which contains five reaction stages, including external aldimine formation, γ-elimination, Michael addition, reformation of the internal aldimine, and final cyclization

Innovative Zr-MOF-driven ECL-RET system: highly specific rituximab detection with epitope mimetic peptide CN-14.

Therapeutic drug monitoring (TDM) of monoclonal antibodies (mAbs) is critical for realizing personalized dosing and optimizing the benefit-to-risk ratio for patients. In this work, a novel competitive electrochemiluminescence resonance energy transfer (ECL-RET) immunosensor was developed for ultra-sensitive rituximab (RTX) detection. A Zr-based metal-organic framework (Zr-MOF) was synthesized via a rapid, facile route using Zr4+ as the metal node and 9,10-di(p-carboxyphenyl)-anthracene (DPA) as the organic luminescent ligand. The as-prepared Zr-MOF exhibited durable and intense ECL output in 4…

In Situ Single-Atom Decoration of Transition Metal Dichalcogenides by Millisecond Flash Thermal Synthesis Toward High Performance Room Temperature Chemiresistors.

Transition metal dichalcogenides (TMD) are attractive for adsorption-driven reactions, yet their activity is strongly site-dependent. Activity is concentrated at edge motifs, whereas most exposed area resides on inert basal planes. Dual-site designs that enrich edges while activating basal planes with catalysts remain challenging to realize without coarsening and metal aggregation during thermal processing. Here, an intense pulsed light-driven flash thermal synthesis route is demonstrated that directly converts ammonium tetrathiomolybdate ((NH4)2MoS4) into few-layer, edge-rich MoS2 nanoflakes

Coprecipitated Silica Controls the Divergent Pathways of Cysteine-Induced Ferrihydrite Transformation.

The reductive transformation of ferrihydrite (Fh) is a key process controlling iron mineral evolution and mineral-associated organic matter (MAOM) cycling in soils and sediments, yet the regulating role of coprecipitated silica remains poorly constrained. Here, we investigated the influence of coprecipitated silica on cysteine-induced Fh transformation under anoxic conditions using Fh and Si-Fh coprecipitates with Si/Fe molar ratios of 0.05 and 0.1. Mineral evolution and Fe speciation were monitored using X-ray diffraction (XRD), Mössbauer spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS),

Ceiling effects in the EOSQ-24 may limit its ability to assess treatment outcomes in early-onset scoliosis.

BACKGROUND: The 24-item Early-Onset Scoliosis Questionnaire (EOSQ-24) is a condition-specific instrument to assess health-related quality of life in children with early-onset scoliosis (EOS). Previous studies have raised concerns regarding ceiling effects, i.e. clustering of scores at the upper limit, which may reduce the ability of the EOSQ-24 to detect clinical improvements. METHODS: A structured review of published clinical studies reporting EOSQ-24 scores was performed. Data were standardized to a 0-100 scale. For each domain weighted mean scores, standard deviations (SD), and ceiling eff

Potential-Controlled Ammonium-Assisted Reversible Electrodeposition of Polyoxometalates for Hybrid Redox Flow Batteries.

Counter-cations play a key role in modulating the redox chemistry and phase behavior of polyoxometalates (POMs). In this study, we report a potential-controlled, ammonium-assisted electrodeposition of POMs from nonaqueous electrolytes. Owing to its tetrahedral geometry and hydrogen-bonding capability, NH4 + uniquely stabilizes reduced POM clusters at the electrode interface, enabling reversible solid-to-solution transitions. Using the mixed-valence vanadium cluster [V18O46(NO3)]5- and Keggin-type POM cluster, [PMo12O40]3- as model systems, we demonstrate controlled reversible charge-transfer d

Seismic Performance of Precast Reinforced Concrete Beam-Column Connections with Embedded Steel Sections.

Precast reinforced concrete (RC) structures offer advantages in terms of construction efficiency and quality control; however, their seismic performance is governed by the behavior of the beam-column connections. This study presents an experimental investigation of the cyclic response of precast RC beam-column joints that include a composite steel connection, designed to enhance strength, stiffness, and damage control in critical regions. A composite joint specimen was tested under displacement-controlled cyclic loading, and its behavior was compared with that of a corresponding pure RC connec

Sodium Expulsion From Sodium closo-Hydroborates Under Electron Beam-Induced Bias.

Electron microscopy invites the opportunity to locally characterize the properties of solid-state electrolytes important for choreographing ion motion within next-generation solid-state batteries. Through the combination of inert gas transfer, cryogenic, time-resolved low-dose analytical electron microscopy, we observe that mixed-anion sodium closo-hydroborate, Na2(B10H10)0.5(B12H12)0.5 (NBH), solid electrolyte suffers from electrostatic charging damage under bias in both transmission electron microscopes and scanning electron microscopes (SEM). From tumor imaging probes to boron neutron capture therapy: a strategy for designing targeted boron carriers for pancreatic Cancer.

Pancreatic cancer is characterized by late detection, early metastatic dissemination, therapy resistance, and a dense desmoplastic stroma that restricts drug access. Surgical resection with adjuvant chemotherapy confers only modest short-term benefit, but systemic toxicity, acquired chemoresistance, and postoperative relapse constrain long-term survival. Boron neutron capture therapy (BNCT) is a binary radiotherapy in which thermal neutron capture by 10B triggers the 10B(n, α)7Li reaction, releasing high-linear-energy-transfer alpha particles and lithium-7 nuclei. Their 5-9 μm range confines c

Improved Locoregional Recurrence-Free Survival With Carbon Ion Versus Photon Radiotherapy in Locally Advanced Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer.

INTRODUCTION: Carbon ion radiotherapy (CIRT) delivers high linear energy transfer radiation with superior dose conformity compared with photon radiotherapy (PRT). However, whether these physical advantages translate into clinical benefit for locally advanced non-small cell lung cancer (LA-NSCLC) in the era of modern systemic therapy remains unclear. METHODS: We performed a retrospective, propensity score-matched cohort study of patients with Stage III LA-NSCLC treated with definitive CIRT or PRT as part of multimodality therapy between January 2016 and December 2023. The primary endpoint was …

Dynamics of vibrationally coupled intersystem crossing in state-of-the-art organic optoelectronic materials.

This work investigates intersystem crossing (ISC) induced by spin-orbit coupling (SOC) in state-of-the-art non-fullerene acceptors (NFAs). A quantum chemistry study analyzed SOC in 10 NFAs using the optimized geometry of the ground state (OGGS), revealing the importance of excited-state character (local or charge transfer) in determining SOC. However, ISC rates calculated with Marcus formalism were significantly lower than experimental values, showing that the three-state model (S1, T1, and T2) is insufficient. A simplified method to calculate coupled probabilities was proposed, leveraging a q

Spin-State Engineering of Iron Phthalocyanine D-Orbitals via Atomic Fe-N4 Coupling for Enhanced Oxygen Reduction Reaction.

Since the properties of electron transfer and orbital interactions in oxygen electrocatalysts are highly spin-dependent, reaction kinetics and thermodynamics are very sensitive to the spin configuration. However, understanding the spin-related origin of catalytic activity in heterogeneous molecular electrocatalysts still remains challenging. Herein, a molecular-atomic coupled catalyst is constructed by integrating iron phthalocyanine (FePc) molecules with Fe-N4 atomic sites anchored on nitrogen-doped carbon nanotubes (FePc-Fe-NCNT). The strong electronic coupling between FePc and the Fe-N4-con
