Existing human mobility data sources poorly predicted the spatial spread of SARS-CoV-2 in Madagascar.

For emerging epidemics such as the COVID-19 pandemic, quantifying travel is a key component of developing accurate predictive models of disease spread to inform public health planning. However, in many LMICs, traditional data sets on travel such as commuting surveys as well as non-traditional sources such as mobile phone data are lacking, or, where available, have only rarely been leveraged by the public health community. Evaluating the accuracy of available data to measure transmission-relevant travel may be further hampered by limited reporting of suspected and laboratory confirmed infection

School closure in response to epidemic outbreaks: Systems-based logic model of downstream impacts.

Background: School closures have been a recommended non-pharmaceutical intervention in pandemic response owing to the potential to reduce transmission of infection between children, school staff and those that they contact. However, given the many roles that schools play in society, closure for any extended period is likely to have additional impacts. Literature reviews of research exploring school closure to date have focused upon epidemiological effects; there is an unmet need for research that considers the multiplicity of potential impacts of school closures. Methods: We used systematic se

Cause-specific mortality prediction model for patients with basaloid squamous cell carcinomas of the head and neck: a competing risk analysis.

Purpose: Basaloid squamous cell carcinoma (BSCC) is a rare, high-grade variant of squamous cell carcinoma (SCC). Most published studies based on population-based datasets focus on prognostic differences between SCC and BSCC. Competing risk analyses for this disease have not been performed. We used Surveillance Epidemiology and End Results (SEER) data to calculate and model the cumulative incidence of death for patients with head and neck BSCC (HNBSCC) with competing risk approaches, and built a model to predict probability of cause-specific death for these patients. Methods: We analyzed data o

What statistical method should be used to evaluate risk factors associated with dmfs index? Evidence from the National Pathfinder Survey of 4-year-old Italian children.

BACKGROUND: Traditional approaches to the analysis of dmfs/DMFS count data pose analytical challenges, considering the increasing proportion of zeroes in the distribution. The aim of this paper was to predict the probability of 'caries-free' subjects and the dependence of dmfs index on the influence of childhood sociodemographic factors, through the application of regression models. METHODS: Data were gathered as part of the National Pathfinder Survey of 4-year-old Italian children. Clinical data on caries disease (dmfs) and childhood sociodemographic factors were collected. The predicted pro

Development and external validation of a prognostic nomogram for cancer-specific survival in elderly patients with early-stage gastric cancer.

BACKGROUND: Elderly patients with early-stage gastric cancer (EGC) often present with heterogeneous prognoses, yet, reliable tools for individualized risk stratification remain limited. This study aimed to develop and externally validate an oncology-focused prognostic model to stratify the risk of cancer-specific survival (CSS) in elderly patients with EGC. METHODS: Data on individuals diagnosed with EGC between 2000 and 2020 were obtained from the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) database. Patients from Zhongshan Hospital were included for external validation. Univariate an

Assessment of GFR Estimation Methods in Patients With Obesity.

CONTEXT: Obesity is an independent risk factor for chronic kidney disease, and accurate estimation of the glomerular filtration rate (GFR) is crucial. However, limited data are available on the performance of the European Kidney Function Consortium (EKFC) equation in individuals with overweight or obesity. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the performance of the EKFC equation by comparing its estimated GFR (eGFR) to values obtained from the 2021 Chronic Kidney Disease Epidemiology Collaboration (CKD-EPI) equation and machine learning (ML) models. METHODS: We compared the models using measured GFR (mGFR

Emission rates of respirable crystalline silica and dust from engineered stone fabrication.

Engineered stone, a composite material containing high levels of crystalline silica, has led to a surge in silicosis among workers who perform cutting, grinding, and other finishing tasks. To improve our understanding of respirable crystalline silica (RCS) and respirable dust exposures and exposure determinants for these tasks, this study extracted data from previously published studies and (i) calculated the emission rate of respirable dust and RCS (mass per time) from experimental simulation studies, (ii) assessed whether control technology or task are determinants of emission rate, and (iii

The role of environmental contamination in the dynamics of HIV-TB co-infection with control strategies: Caputo fractional-order approach.

This study investigates the effectiveness of integrated environmental and medical interventions in controlling HIV-TB co-infection. A Caputo fractional-order modeling framework is developed to capture memory and nonlocal effects inherent in chronic infections, while explicitly incorporating environmental reservoirs of Mycobacterium tuberculosis as an additional transmission pathway. The mathematical well-posedness of the model is established through existence, uniqueness, positivity, boundedness, and Ulam-Hyers stability analysis. Numerical solutions are obtained using an Adams-Bashforth-Moult

Community Engagement to Inform Multilevel Analyses of the Role of Neighborhood Factors in Cancer Control Behaviors in African Americans.

BACKGROUND: Although community engagement has had a substantial presence in public health research, community input to inform geospatial and health analyses remains underutilized and novel. This article reports on community engagement activities to solicit stakeholder perspectives on the role of neighborhood conditions in health and cancer. We discuss how this community input refined an a priori conceptual model to be tested in the larger Families, Friends, and Neighborhoods Study. METHODS: We conducted semistructured virtual interviews with 82 stakeholders (e.g., community and faith leaders,

Does Adjuvant Radiotherapy Enhance Survival in Intracranial Solitary Fibrous Tumor Patients?

OBJECTIVE: Intracranial solitary fibrous tumor is a rare central nervous system tumor that lacks a reliable prognostic clinical model. Uncertainty persists regarding the treatment outcomes of surgery and adjuvant radiotherapy (ART). To address this, we investigated the efficacy of ART and applied machine learning (ML) to develop accurate prognostic models. METHODS: The Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results database was used for this study's analysis. To identify the prognostic variables, we conducted Cox regression analysis and constructed prognostic models using 5 ML algorithms to pred

Modeling the impact of COVID-19 nonpharmaceutical interventions on respiratory syncytial virus transmission in South Africa.

BACKGROUND: The South African government employed various nonpharmaceutical interventions (NPIs) to reduce the spread of SARS-CoV-2. Surveillance data from South Africa indicates reduced circulation of respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) throughout the 2020-2021 seasons. Here, we use a mechanistic transmission model to project the rebound of RSV in the two subsequent seasons. METHODS: We fit an age-structured epidemiological model to hospitalization data from national RSV surveillance in South Africa, allowing for time-varying reduction in RSV transmission during periods of COVID-19 circulation

Exposure to soluble platinum salts in precious metal refinery workers over a 17-year period.

BACKGROUND: Occupational exposure to soluble chlorinated platinum (Pt) salts, commonly called chloroplatinates, is a known cause of Pt salt sensitisation (PSS) and occupational asthma. We aimed to model inhalable soluble Pt salts exposure levels based on measurements in precious metal refineries for use in a retrospective cohort study on PSS. METHODS: Five platinum refineries located in the United Kingdom (3 sites), United States, and South Africa provided time weighted average inhalable soluble Pt salts exposure data, measured in 2,982 personal air samples over a 17-year period (2000-2016).

An artificial intelligence model to identify snakes from across the world: Opportunities and challenges for global health and herpetology.

BACKGROUND: Snakebite envenoming is a neglected tropical disease that kills an estimated 81,000 to 138,000 people and disables another 400,000 globally every year. The World Health Organization aims to halve this burden by 2030. To achieve this ambitious goal, we need to close the data gap in snake ecology and snakebite epidemiology and give healthcare providers up-to-date knowledge and access to better diagnostic tools. An essential first step is to improve the capacity to identify biting snakes taxonomically. The existence of AI-based identification tools for other animals offers an innovati

Development of the invasive candidiasis discharge [I Can discharge] model: a mixed methods analysis.

Patients with invasive candidiasis (IC) have complex medical and infectious disease problems that often require continued care after discharge. This study aimed to assess echinocandin use at hospital discharge and develop a transition of care (TOC) model to facilitate discharge for patients with IC. This was a mixed method study design that used epidemiologic assessment to better understand echinocandin use at hospital discharge TOC. Using grounded theory methodology focused on patients given echinocandins during their last day of hospitalization, a TOC model for patients with IC, the invasive

Potential Predictors of Injury Among Pre-Professional Ballet and Contemporary Dancers.

Injuries occur frequently among ballet and contemporary dancers. However, limited literature exists on injuries to pre-professional dancers in the USA. The goals of this study were to 1. provide a descriptive epidemiology of the incidence of musculoskeletal injuries in an adolescent and young adult dance population and 2. identify parsimonious regression models that could be potentially used to predict injury incidence. The study was based at the University of North Carolina School of the Arts (UNCSA) from Fall 2009 to Spring 2015. An injury was defined as any event that caused a dancer to be

Biomechanics of Lumbar Motion-Segments in Dynamic Compression.

Recent epidemiology studies have reported increase in lumbar spine injuries in frontal crashes. Whole human body finite element models (FEHBM) are frequently used to delineate mechanisms of such injuries. However, the accuracy of these models in mimicking the response of human spine relies on the characterization data of the spine model. The current study set out to generate characterization data that can be input to FEHBM lumbar spine, to obtain biofidelic responses from the models. Twenty-five lumbar functional spinal units were tested under compressive loading. A hydraulic testing machine w

Modelling the transmission and control strategies of varicella among school children in Shenzhen, China.

OBJECTIVES: Varicella (chickenpox) is a highly transmissible childhood disease. Between 2010 and 2015, it displayed two epidemic waves annually among school populations in Shenzhen, China. However, their transmission dynamics remain unclear and there is no school-based vaccination programme in Shenzhen to-date. In this study, we developed a mathematical model to compare a school-based vaccination intervention scenario with a baseline (i.e. no intervention) scenario. METHODS: Data on varicella reported cases were downloaded from the Infectious Disease Reporting Information Management System. W
