We investigated the effects of two mucoregulating drugs, S-carboxymethylcysteine (S-CMC) and N-acetylcysteine (NAC), on the attachment of Moraxella catarrhalis (M. catarrhalis) to pharyngeal epithelial cells. The attachment of M. catarrhalis decreased (33-57%) significantly (P<0.01) in a dose-dependent manner in cells treated with mucoregulating drugs as compared to the control. The mutagenic activity of 7,12-dimethylbenz[a]anthracene in epithelial liver cells (CHEL) in culture was unaffected by the enhancement of intracellular cAMP induced to different extents and with different mechanisms by forskolin and 3-isobutyl-1-methylxanthine. However, the latter compound exerted antimutagenic effects (> 60%), which may be tentatively ascribed to inhibition of the inducible monooxygenase isoform(s) responsible for the specific biotransformation of 7,12-dimethylbenz[a]anthracene to highly mutagenic metabolites in CHEL cells.

We have explored the relationship of changes in proliferative responses of human mammary epithelial cells to a phorbol ester (TPA) and to 8-Br-cAMP, which modulate the activities of protein kinases A and C (PKA and PKC), with breast tumour progression. Autoimmunity against biliary epithelial cells is considered to be involved in the pathogenesis of primary biliary cirrhosis (PBC). We have examined the proliferative response (DNA synthesis) of primary thyroid epithelial cultures to serum and a defined serum-substitute. These cultures were derived from normal human thyroid and from thyroid adenomas and carcinomas. All normal cultures showed a dose-dependent response, with a maximum 3H-thymidine labelling index of around 50%.
