RESULTS OF SURGICAL TREATMENT OF PECTUS EXCAVATUM IN CHILDREN AND ADOLESCENTS.

UNLABELLED: Congenital pectus excavatum (PE) takes the first place among the deformation of the chest, accompanied by violations of the cardiorespiratory system and various cosmetic defects. A radical way to eliminate the deformation of the chest is surgical correction-thoracoplasty. MATERIAL AND METHODS: This study was performed on the results of surgical treatment of 183 patients with various forms of PE at the age of 3 to 18 years. All operated children were divided into three groups. The first group consisted of 76 (41.5%) patients who underwent thoracoplasty with fixation of the mobilize

Bone Lengthening Radius using Limb Reconstruction System - A Successful Treatment for Radius Shortening: A Case Report.

Fractures of the distal radius are the most common type of forearm fractures seen in children. The most serious outcome of physeal injuries is growth arrest, which can result in deformity and even significant differences in limb length. Therefore, we'd like to share our experience with treating a patient whose left radius stopped growing after she had a physeal injury in an accident. Case presentation: we encountered a 10-year-old girl, who was involved in a road traffic accident. She sustained closed fracture distal end left radius (Salter Harris 2). She sought medical assistance late, so ost

Challenging management of multifocal upper extremity fractures in a polytrauma setting: A case report.

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: Multifocal fractures in a single upper extremity represent a significant clinical challenge, often resulting from high-energy impacts such as motor vehicle accidents or severe falls. These injuries require complex, multifaceted approaches in management, spanning initial acute care to long-term rehabilitation. This paper examines the complexities of diagnosing, treating, and rehabilitating multifocal upper extremity fractures, highlighting the importance of timely intervention and a multidisciplinary approach to maximize functional recovery, minimize long-term disab

Pathological Fractures in Aneurysmal Bone Cysts: A Systematic Review.

Background: Aneurysmal bone cysts (ABCs) are osteolytic, non-malignant, vascular lesions of the bone. Pathological fractures can be a manifestation of the ABCs, which occur in about 8% of ABCs. Different treatments have been described in the literature, but, nowadays, an optimal management of the pathological fractures in patients with ABCs is still a matter of debate and there are no standard guidelines for treatment nor any shared indication about the best surgical intervention. The aim of our study is to review the current literature available on this matter exploring and confronting differ

Investigating the outcomes of full thickness skin graft in the reconstruction of concealed penis in children aged 7 to 14 years.

INTRODUCTION: Concealed penis is a congenital anomaly that affects not only the appearance but also the function of the external genitalia in the male sex. Different surgical methods have been proposed to correct this disorder, including removal of the previous scar, penile shaft, penile trunk skin reconstruction with flap, penile skin fixation in penopubic and penoscrotal angles, and removal of extra pubic fat. In this study, we will discuss the results of definitive surgery in one stage using autogenous skin grafts and examine the details of this technique. METHODS: This study was conducted

Allocentric information represented by self-referenced spatial coding in the primate medial temporal lobe.

For living organisms, the ability to acquire information regarding the external space around them is critical for future actions. While the information must be stored in an allocentric frame to facilitate its use in various spatial contexts, each case of use requires the information to be represented in a particular self-referenced frame. Previous studies have explored neural substrates responsible for the linkage between self-referenced and allocentric spatial representations based on findings in rodents. However, the behaviors of rodents are different from those of primates in several aspect

The Radiographic Union Score for ulnar fractures (RUSU) predicts ulnar shaft nonunion.

AIMS: To develop a reliable and effective radiological score to assess the healing of isolated ulnar shaft fractures (IUSF), the Radiographic Union Score for Ulna fractures (RUSU). METHODS: Initially, 20 patients with radiographs six weeks following a non-operatively managed ulnar shaft fracture were selected and scored by three blinded observers. After intraclass correlation (ICC) analysis, a second group of 54 patients with radiographs six weeks after injury (18 who developed a nonunion and 36 who united) were scored by the same observers. RESULTS: In the initial study, interobserver and i

Shortening arthrodesis combined with limited fasciectomy in severe recurrent Dupuytren's disease of the fifth finger.

OBJECTIVE: Management of recurrent Dupuytren's disease of the little finger is challenging. Various treatment modalities have been proposed: external fixation, local skin flap, dermofasciectomy, or even amputation. An alternative surgical technique was introduced by Honecker et al. in 2016 and refined by Raimbeau et al. in 2019, consisting in resection of the middle phalanx and shortening arthrodesis. We modified the technique by combining arthrodesis with a limited fasciectomy of the abductor and/or pretendinous cord in the fifth ray to improve cosmetic and functional outcomes. METHODS: Pati

Additional measures of macular function beyond visual acuity.

PURPOSE: Visual function is a complex process in which external visual stimuli are interpreted. Patients with retinal diseases and prolonged follow-up times may experience changes in their visual function that are not detected by the standard visual acuity measure, as they are a result of other alterations in visual function. With the advancement of different methods to evaluate visual function, additional measurements have become available, and further standardization suggests that some methods may be promising for use in clinical trials or routine clinical practice. The objectives of this ar

Intermittent Hydrostatic Pressure Promotes Cartilage Repair in an Inflammatory Environment through Hippo-YAP Signaling In Vitro and In Vivo.

The study of chondrogenic progenitor cells (CPCs) as seed cells has become a new focus of cartilage regeneration. The inflammatory environment of osteoarthritis (OA) inhibits the repair ability of CPCs. But the OA patients' CPCs showed an excellent regeneration ability with intermittent hydrostatic pressure (IHP). However, the mechanism is unclear. We compared the expression of the Hippo signaling effect factor YAP between OA and normal cartilages. Then, the relationship between the Kellgren-Lawrence (K-L) score of OA and the rate of YAP-positive cells was analyzed. The changes of CPCs after I

Comprehensive Treatment and Reconstructive Algorithm for Functional Restoration after Ballistic Facial Injury.

BACKGROUND: Ballistic facial injuries are rare, with most trauma centers reporting 1-20 cases annually. These patients present significant management challenges to reconstructive surgeons, not only due to their rarity but also due to the complex decision-making process that is involved. The aim of this study was to review our experience with the application of craniofacial microsurgery in management of facial gunshot wounds. METHODS: A retrospective review of a single-surgeon experience at a level I trauma center from 2011 to 2020 for patients sustaining self-inflicted gunshot wounds to the f

Case Report: Identifying Andersson-Like Lesions in Diffuse Idiopathic Skeletal Hyperostosis.

Andersson lesions (ALs) in ankylosing spondylitis (AS) pose a severe risk to the stability of ankylosed spine, which might result in significant deterioration of spinal cord function after traumatic or inflammatory causes. Herein, erosive discovertebral lesions in diffuse idiopathic skeletal hyperostosis (DISH) presented important clinical similarities to AL in AS, but failed to completely recognize unstable spinal lesions. Therefore, we pioneered to identify spinal discovertebral lesions similar to Andersson-like lesions (ALLs) in DISH, followed by the characterization and summarization of th
