Cryptococcal meningitis (CM) remains a major cause of morbidity and mortality among immunocompromised patients, especially in areas of high HIV prevalence, although it can also cause disease in the apparently immunocompetent. Improving the management of HIV-associated CM is important to ensure that patients can survive to benefit from increasing access to ART. In this review we focus on recent advances in prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of CM.

BACKGROUND: Endogenous fungal endophthalmitis (EFE) is a rare intraocular infection that has recently increased in incidence over the last few decades. The most common causative organism of endogenous endophthalmitis is Candida albicans. Treatment generally is initiated with an antifungal drug systemically and, depending on the ocular findings, may also include a vitrectomy with the injection of an intraocular antifungal agent. Specific predisposing factors may make a patient more at risk for development of an ocular infection.

AIM: To assess the prevalence and patterns of ocular involvement in disseminated candidiasis in intensive care setting.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Institutional review board approved case review of intensive care admissions. These were patients of septicemia who had undergone ocular examination as part of their initial assessment. Candida auris is an emerging multidrug-resistant yeast with high mortality. We report the sentinel C. auris case on the United States West Coast in a patient who relocated from India.
